We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The NLC pretilt angles on thin plastic substrates generated higher than that on glass substrate. Also, EO characteristics of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer substrate are almost the same as that of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on glass. However, the transmittances of the TN-LCD with a rubbed PI surface based on polymer is less than that with a rubbed PI surface based on g1ass.

This paper speculate technical aspects of Special Effects which would be developed in the future film industry and also how the make-up will be used as an expression technique of the Special Effect. In the Hollywood movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" 2008, we realize that the important of the Special make-up. This movie was famous for the best CG work when it was first released. However, Special make-up is where it truly shines. They used special tissue-like paper which is even thinner than the real tissue. Using this special paper, they formed lines on the face. In this movie, we see the many different faces of the Benjamin Button, as he ages. They were made mostly special make-up, with minimal help of Computer Graphic. The human faces provide a great deal of information in regard to race, age, sex, personality, feeling condition , etc. If we pay a close attention to the aging process, we can estimate the future facial shape and features for different ages. By using these predictions, the future face for any given age can be made, with face modeling software. Great base and great CG work go hand in hand. We need to recognize the importance of the special make-up and have to understand the usages for many different kinds of available materials.

We synthesized photoalignment material of high thermal resistance with hydroxyl aromatic polyimide, and studied the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer layers. Also, electro-optical (EO) performances for the twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) photoaligned with linearly polarized UV exposure were investigated. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the photopolymer surface can be obtained. However, the low pretilt angles were obtained below 1$^{\circ}$. The Voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve without backflow bounce in the photoaligned TN cell with UV exposure was observed. The response time of photoaligned TN cell was measured about 24 ms. Finally, The photoaligned TN cell has few hysteresis, and shows the residual DC voltage that is less.

Preliminary time-series observations for short-period variability survey (SPVS) were carried out using a 155mm refractor and a $2k{\times}3k$ CCD camera at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. We found 21 new variable stars in the $90'{\times}60'$ test field region : 9 eclipsing binary stars, $5{\delta}$ Scuti type stars, a ${\gamma}$ Doradus type star, and 6 long period variables. The observing field center is R.A. $05^h\;00^m\;00^s$, DEC. $50^{\circ}\;00'\;00"$ (J2000.0). The period and amplitude ranges for the short-period variables, i.e., ${\delta}$ Scuti stars, were 0.052day - 0.107day and 0.012mag - 0.064mag, respectively.

Through time-series CCD photometry using a 130mm refractor of Busan Science Academy, we found a new δ Scuti type variable star, esc 03665-00576. We performed following observations using a 1.8m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. Three frequencies have been derived by multiple-frequency analysis, which are 10.968, 7.156 and 15.182cycle day−1, respectively. V-amplitude of esc 03665-00576 is ΔV= 0.04.

We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The NLC pretilt angles generated are about 3$^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle are at about 1.7$^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. We obtain that AFM (atomic force microscope) image of rubbed PI surface with polymer film has formed the micro-groove structure at the low curring temperature (120$^{\circ}C$). However, no grooves are obtained on the glass substrate at the same temperature. It is considered that this alignment may be attributed to roughness of micro-groove substrate. The tilt angle increases with increasing baking temperature for making polyimide layer using glass substrate. It was concluded that the pretilt angle in the polyimide surface is attributable to the increasing of imidization rato.
