조선시대 왕실 혼례 음식의 제례적 성격과 혼례의 의미 고찰

본고에서는 조선시대 왕실 혼례의 특징과 의미를 드러내는 한 방법으로 혼례 음식에 나타난 제례적 성격에 집중하여 혼례의 의미를 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 우선 조선이 전범으로 삼은 중국 의례서를 검토하였다. 중국의례서의 동뢰 절차에 사용되는 음식으로는 채소 절임, 젓갈, 말린 물고기, 국, 곡식, 희생 등이 제시되는데, 이것은 희생, 해저(?菹), 포과(脯果), 곡식, 고기국의 다섯 가지로 구성되는 제례 음식에 모두 포함되는 것이다. 또한 교배례에서 부부가 세 번 술을 마시고 안주를 먹는 과정이 제례의 삼헌(三獻) 절차에 비교될 수 있고, 매 술잔의 술을 마실 때마다 좨주(祭酒)하는 절차가 있다는 점과 음식을 담는 그릇도 제기(祭器)를 사용한다는 점에서 혼례의 절차와 음식은 제례와 공통점을 지닌다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 혼례가두 남녀의 결합일 뿐 아니라 조상을 섬기고 대를 잇는다는 의미에서 제례와 의미가 상통하기 때문에 나타나는 특징으로 보인다. 그런데 조선 왕실의 혼례 음식을 살펴보면 중국 의례서에 제시된 모습과는 차이가 있다. 조선의 혼례 음식은 유밀과나 실과 등이 올라간 다과상과 지짐이나 탕 등이 포함된 식사 상으로 구성되어 있다. 이와 같은 중국 의례서와의 차이는 조선왕실의 혼례 음식은 고려 이래의 전통 방식을 따랐기 때문이다. 그러나 이 상차림 또한 조선의 왕실 제사인 속제 상차림과 유사점을 보이며, 교배례에서 세 번 술을 마시거나 좨주(祭酒)하는 형식은 같으므로, 제례의 형식을 벗어난 것이 아니라 조선의 제사 전통이 반영된 것으로 읽어볼 수 있다. 요컨대 조선시대 왕실 혼례는 원칙적으로 의례서에 규정된 절차와 형식을 따르되 그 음식에 있어서는 조선식의 변용이 이루어졌다. 그렇지만 여전히 중국의 예서에서처럼 음식에 제례의 특징이 남아있다. 따라서 전통시대의 혼례는 제례와 유의미한 관련을 맺고 있다는 것을 엿볼 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of food in royal wedding ceremonies during the Joseon(Choson) Dynasty by comparing wedding ceremony food with sacrificial ritual food. Because Chinese old ritual classics had been one of the most important standards in East Asian ritual history, the first section starts with a review of Chinese old classics. From the many steps in traditional weddings, the procedure called Dongnoe meaning `sharing the sacrifice` is when the bride and groom greet each other and share wine and food, which can be understood as the main `wedding ceremony` from today. Because the sacrifice was considered a crucial medium to connect humans to heaven, sacrifice had been used for ritual from ancient times. From an analysis of the food used in Dongnoe, two features show the relationship between the wedding ceremony and sacrificial ritual. First, the food in wedding ceremony was similar to sacrificial ritual. Second, the same utensils were used both in wedding and sacrificial ceremonies. However, wedding ceremony food during the Joseon(Choson) Dynast y had different characteristics from Chinese rituals. Although both forms of ritual contained an element of sacrifice, the Korean wedding ceremony share d common vernacular ritual food from the Joseon(Choson) Dynasty. As a result, food in royal weddings had certain similarities with sacrificial ritual food. This relation comes from ancient thought that a wedding is not only a meeting of spouses, but also the connection of the past and the future, which emphasizes the role of the bride in providing a successor to the family.
