This study tried to explore how the motif of cuckoo was introduced and this motif contributed to poetic embodiment - the motif of cuckoo is one of major poetic motifs in the Chinese poetry. Because most of Korean authors in the early times of modern poetry had intellectual knowledge about Chinese poetry, this knowledge naturally affected their poetic embodiment. The motif of cuckoo was one of them. The motif of cuckoo is originated from Chinese poetry and this motif was widely used in Korean poetry such as Sijo. Such a traditional and emotional motif was variously introduced in modern poetry. This study investigated the introduction of the motif of cuckoo in the modern poetry in the aspects of succession and modification. For this study, the poems written by Kim Sowol, Han Yongun, Kim Yeongrang, Seo Jungju, and Cho Jihun were focused on because their poems were most clearly affected by the motif. In the modern poetry, the motif of cuckoo contributed to establishing a poetic world for each poet being modified a little differently according to poets intention. The motif had ever become a central material of their representative poem. This kind of study would be an important basis for more deeply and exactly recognizing historical context of modern poetry which succeeded tradition.
