        N/A Two species of mites found in house dust, Dermatophagoides pteronyssimus and Dermatophagoides farinae, have been widely accepted as an important allergen contributing to bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in Korea, Previous studies reported a seasonal variation and differences in the number of house dust mites in various sites of the house. Also, the literature reports a close relationship between the allergen concentration of house dust mites and the number of people living in a given space. In order to assess the distribution and the seasonal variations of the house dust mite allerge~n in the every day living environment of Korean homes, we collected dust samples from various sites in 20 different houses (bedclothes, on and under the furniture, windowframes, sofa and carpet). The samples were obtained in Seoul during the months of August & December of 1986 and May, July & September of 1987. Using an inhibition radioimmunoassay of Dermatophagoides farinae (d2, Dfa) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssimus (d1, Dpt), we examined the distribution of house dust mites allergen and calculated the allergen concentration using a dilution curve of Dpt solution (1mg/ml of Pharmalgen® presented by Pharmaeia Co.) and Dfa solution 1mg/ml of lyophilized extract presented by Torii Co.). The results are as follows; 1) The Dfa allergen level (105.65㎍/ml) in bedclothes was significantly higher than that found on the furniture (33.16㎍/ml), under the furniture (22.98㎍/ml), and on the windowframes (8.95㎍/ml) in August, 1986. The Dfa allergen level (102.13㎍/ml) on sofas was similar to that found in bedclothes. 2) The mean allergen concentrations of Dpt and Dfa in bedclothes, and on and under the furniture were not significantly different, although the allergen level of Dpt was higher than that of Dfa in the above mentioned sites in 15, 12 and 11 houses respectively. 3) As for the seasonal variation, the Dfa allergen concentration in bedclothes was highest during the month of August 1986 and then decreased until May, 1987 and thereafter an increasing trend was noted in July and September of 1987. This seasonal increase of Dfa allergen concentration was not noted in the samples found on the furniture, under the furniture and on the windowframes of July and September, 1987, but from August 1986 to May 1987 a decreasing trend was noted resembling that of bedclothes. We were able to obtain dust samples from sofas in only 4 houses in August of 1986 and then from 8 houses, however, the seasonal variation observed was similar to that of bedclothes. 4) The Dfa allergen concentration of bedclothes in oil heating homes (14 houses) was 13.57㎍/ml and in briquet heating homes (6 houses), it was 17.19㎍/ml in the dust samples taken December 1986 when heating systems were regularly operated, but there was no statistical significance between these values. 5) In comparison of the mean Dfa alergen concentrations in bedclothes and sofas according to the change in temperature and relative humidity during the time period of August 1986 to September 1987, the concentration was found to be highest in summer. These results suggest that the allergens of D. pteronyssimus and D. farinae were equally important in 20 houses in Seoul. The bedclothes were the moat abundant source of mite allergens and the peak concentration of mite allergen was noted in summer.
