The wild silkmoth Antheraea yamamai Guérin-Méneville, 1861 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is an important producer of silk that is superior to the silk produced by traditional domesticated silkworm. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of An. yamamai collected from Jeju Island, which is the southernmost island approximately 100 km offshore southward from the Korean Peninsula. Determining this sequence will be necessary for tracing the biogeographic history of the species and developing molecular markers for identifying the origin of commercial products. Comparison of the sequence divergence among two available and the current mitogenomes revealed a low but substantial number of substitutions, totaling 23 nucleotides in the whole genome. CytB and ND5 showed the highest variability with five and four variations, respectively, suggesting that these regions will be prior regions to target for subsequent biogeographic and diagnosis study. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on all available sequences of Saturniidae showed that An. yamamai is a sister to the congeneric species An. pernyi, corroborating that Antheraea is a highly supported monophyletic group. The tribe Saturniini was clearly non-monophyletic and interrupted by Attacini and Bunaeini.

A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor system for the detection of odorants, especially environmental pollutant, has been constructed by depositing various phospholipids, activated carbon and lead compound pigment onto the surface of the QCM. The characteristics of a QCM operating at 9 MHz deposited with phosphatidyl- choline were analysed. An explanation is given for different odorant affinities based on the monolayer properties of phospholipids. The identification of odorants is discussed in terms of a comparison of their normalized resonant frequency shift patterns and relative response intensities calculated from the response areas. Applying the lead compound pigment coated QCM, it was possible to detect sulfur compound specifically. Using a number of different lipid-coated QCMs, odorants could be identified by comparing the response patterns.

N/A Shell sand is widely used to make a complex shape castings due to its good collapsibility. When molten metal is poured into the mold, various gases are generated by the thermal decomposition of binder in the shell core. Casting defects such as blow hole and blister come from these gases. If it is possible to predict the evolution of gas quantitatively, it may provide effective solutions for minimizing the casting defects. To examine the gas evolution by shell core quantitatively, casting experiment and calculation were carried out. Gas pressure and gas volume evolved by shell core were measured in the experiment, and temperature distribution in the shell core was obtained by heat transfer analysis. From the result above, prediction on the gas volume evolved during pouring was tried. As forming pressure of the shell core increased and forming temperature decreased, the gas evolution increased. There was a close relationship between the calculated gas volume evolved and the measured one. (Received July 20, 1998)
주성분의 자기일치성에 기초한 다변량 대표관찰치의 기하적 표현

일변량 자료의 경우 대표관찰치는 사분위수 등에 기초하여 자료의 분포와 변이를 함축적으로 표현하기 위한 목적으로 사용되는 소수 개의 관찰치이다. Jones와 Rice(1992)는 다변량 자료에 대한 대표관찰치를 선택하기 위해 주성분분석에 근거한 방법을 제시한 바 있다. 이 연구에서는 주성분의 자기일치성을 이용하여 대표관찰치를 선택하고, 이를 표현하는 방안을 고찰한다. 기존의 방법에 의한 대표관찰치가 자료의 표본변이에 민감한 한편, 여기에서 제안되는 방법의 결과는 자기일치성을 가진다. Representative observations are useful to express explicitly the distributional variation of the data by a few selected observations corresponding to the quantiles in the univariate situation. Jones and Rice(1992) extended it to the multidimensional case by the principal component based method. This study introduces a modified version of Jones and Rice exploiting the self-consistency of principal components in expressing the chosen observation vectors. Compared to that of Jones and Rice, the suggested method tends to provide with less susceptible representative observations to the sampling variation of the data and the resulted vectors benefits from the self-consistency.

The use of preformed polymers and their cross-linking has been attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fragility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films. The evaluation of the characteristics of the LB multi-layer by using an AT-cut quartz crystal has been also attempted. This study reveals that the polyether pendants of 2C18VE3 lie at thee air-water interface at low surface pressures and are forced down into the subphase when the monolayers are compressed. This characteristic behavoir of the pendant polyethers is very clear on aqueous poly allyl amine(PAA) and is also observeable on saturated aqueous NaCl and CaCl₂. And the characteristics of LB multi-layers could be evaluated by using AT-cut quartz crystal in situ .
