From a conversation-analytic perspective, this paper analyzes the “committal” suffixes ci and cianha used as “pseudo-tags” in Korean conversation, which render the utterance they mark a request for confirmation (RfC) formatted in the form of a polar declarative question. The focus is given to examining differences ci and cianha as constitutive of mutually related but distinct forms of RfC, particularly in terms of the ways in which the confirmable is formulated and intersubjective understanding is solicited and negotiated. It is proposed that the RfC formatted with the pseudo-tag ci indexes the speaker’s orientation towards having the recipient help him/her “raise commitment” to the factually ascertainable character of shared information. Its use organizes recipiency in such a way that the recipient’s confirmation is solicited collusively. The RfC formatted with cianha, by contrast, furnishes the speaker with a discursive resource for engaging the recipient in a negotiatory process, prodding him/her to raise his/her “momentarily latent” commitment. With the confirmable grounded in general/shared knowledge, the use of cianha has the import of organizing a range of “attendant activities”, such as appeasing, whining, rebuking, etc.

Still Italian architect and designer Achille Castiglioni(b.1918) is considered one of the foremost and consequential designers. In fact, he is consistently acknowledged as a master of modern Italian design among with Ettore Scottsass and Marco Zanuso. During his long lasting career, he has designed or collaborated in almost 150 objects arranging from lamps, stools, cameras, telephones, vacuum cleaners, bookshelves, car seats and many others. Arco and Parentesi lamps, are still in current production denoted as the imperishable products. The core characteristics of these products are the clarity and yet played win in which he evidently executed beautifully. This study focus on his standard principles in design process that is remarkable in its respect for material technology and production techniques aiming the formal balance of the final product. Achille Castiglioni has taught the most enthusiastic and popular industrial design courses in the Architectural School of the Polytechnic of Milan with own peculiar teaching style and creative method. Accordingly his flexibility in design approach has permitted him to design a vast array of varied objects that have influence and updated the contemporary modern design movement.
Nice and Good as Evaluative Descriptors: An Exercise in Sequential Analysis
김규현 담화·인지언어학회 2015 담화와 인지 Vol.22 No.1
This paper, from the perspectives of conversation analysis and stance theory, reports findings on how the evaluative practices employing the two descriptive terms in English, nice and good, are distinctively organized in naturally-occurring interactions. Focusing on their sequential distribution, it examines their distinct indexical properties in terms of how speakers select and manage stance objects and negotiate alignment with the addressee. Nice is indexical of the speaker’s positive stance in an ‘oblique’ way. The referent it describes, which tends to be of minor topical import, is often used as a category resource for invoking another ‘oriented-to’ referent that the speaker evaluates obliquely as the main stance object. In storytelling contexts, it serves as a resource for indexing ‘ordinariness’ in the way background settings are described, e.g., as preparatory grounds for projecting some event of ‘extraordinary’ nature. Good, in contrast, indexes the speaker’s positive and often ‘nuanced’ stance grounded in their subjective judgment, with the stance object being evaluated in terms of its generic qualities. Its use thus invokes the interactional need to negotiate alignment with the addressee in topically-sustained assessment activities, often indexing conflictual stances and resolution thereof.
