In this paper we have inferred the influence of Zeno on the construction of the potential infinite of Aristotle based on arguments of Zeno's paradoxes. When we examine the potential infinite of Aristotle as the basis of the ancient Greek mathematics, we can see that they did not permit the concept of the actual infinite necessary for calculus. The reason Why they recognized the potential infinite, denying the actual infinite as seen in Aristotle's physics could be found in their attempt to escape the illogicality shown in Zeno's arguments. Accordingly, this paper could provided one of reasons why the ancient Greeks had used uneasy exhaustion's method instead of developing the quadrature involving the limit concept.

에우독소스의 비례론이 데데킨트가 실수를 현대적으로 정의한 '데데킨트 절단'과 일치한다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 데데킨트는 2000년보다 더 앞선 에우독소스의 방법을 근거로 조사함으로써 실수체계에 대한 확고한 기초를 확립하였다고 볼 수 있다. 그래서 데데킨트의 정의에서 그리스 유산을 구별하는 것은 가치가 있을 것으로 판단된다. 그런데 에우독소스의 비례론과 데데킨트 절단 사이에는 '근본적인 차이'가 존재한다. 그리스인들은 수(number)와 공간적 크기(magnitude)사이의 구별에 생각이 미치지 못한 것으로 보인다. 본 논문에서는 비와 비례 개념에 대한 에우독소스의 설명과 '데데킨트 절단'을 통한 실수의 구조와의 관계를 살펴봄으로서 에우독소스의 비례론이 데데킨트의 실수의 완비성을 증명하기 위해 도입된 절단의 개념과 어떤 관계가 있으며 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지를 고찰하고자 한다.

This research analyzed the philosophy of storytelling elementary mathematics textbooks used in the 1st semester of grade 4. The three analysis frames were as follows: the variety of the types and materials of storytelling presented in each chapter, the adequacy of storytelling in the introduction section for each chapter, and the association between storytelling in the textbook instructions and the open thinking activities presented in each chapter. Our research results can be summarized as follow: All stories presented in the textbooks were introduced in the introduction section, and among the 56 stories presented, those related to real life totaled 54 (96.4%). However, various types of stories should be presented including the stories related to the history of mathematics. The fitness for motivation and the material component of the stories were appropriate, but the necessity of storytelling reconstruction was analyzed. It seems to be appropriate for some of the stories presented in the first class of each chapter. However, others need to be improved considering the educational purpose of section. The stories were adequate in terms of textbook instructions of each chapter and the open thinking activities were only 52% and the remaining 48% were found to be inadequate, overlapped and unsatisfactory. Therefore, considering the educational purposes of each section, it is necessary to improve the latter to make it as a valuable supplement. The derived results are expected to help the improvement of the textbook in the future, including the development of the scholarship resources and reconstruction of storytelling by the teachers in the field.

The purpose of this study was to analyze students’attitudes towards mathematics based on lesson plans using storytelling-reconstructed activities for the statistics unit in the 4th grade mathematics textbook. For this, we chose two classes among the 4th grade attending H elementary school, composed 29 students each, one for experiment the other for comparison. The results of this study are summarized as follows: The students’ interest and attitudes towards mathematics showed statistically significant improvement, however there was not any statistically significant difference in terms of mathematical value. The qualitative assessments in mathematical diary, the students’ and teachers’ comments on the class showed an affirmative change in the students’ attitudes towards mathematics. Through these results, this study offers teachers some suggestions to teach mathematics using storytelling- reconstructed activities.
