Crosscultural Communication and Nonverbal Channels
권순철 팬코리아영어교육학회 2005 영어교육연구 Vol.17 No.4
This paper points out the pressing need to address nonverbal channels such as gestures and silence in second language education, especially where it concerns two distant languages such as Korean and English. After examining nonverbal channels as well as speech acts as sources of crosscultural misunderstanding, it underlines the importance of transfer in understanding the mechanism of cross-cultural misunderstanding. In doing so, it stresses the need to incorporate communicatively meaningful nonverbal behaviors in the notion of communicative competence. Apparently communicative acts are realized verbally and/or non- verbally and nonverbal communication is strongly culture-based. The paper concludes that textbook writers and second language teachers will have to pay more attention to the cross-linguistic similarities and differences in the occurrence and functions of nonverbal communication than ever.

The important contents of this paper is divided into four chapters as follows; (1) The background and types in Price-Level Change Accounting (2) The international trends in Price-Level Change Accounting (3) The structure of information generation in Price-Level Change Accounting (4) The comparative analysis of SAPP No.16 and SFAS No.33. As a result of this study, in the U.S.A. the Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No.33 is regarded as dominant method. Accordingly, further developments may be expected in the U.S.A. with SFAS No.33, although partial modifications must be accompanied. In the United Kingdom the A.S.C. has stated that it would hope to leave Statement of Standard Accounting Practice No.16 unchanged for at least three years to allow experience in use before further developments and refinements are made. However, it seems likely that as the 1980S progress current-cost accounting will continue to develop. Under the present conditions, therefore, it is required that further research on current-cost accounting system and the technique of practical analysis should be made hereafter.
Linguistic Politeness연구의 현황과 과제
권순철 경주대학교 1994 論文集 Vol.6 No.-
Two major developments in the late 1960's and in the early 1970's have influenced the current surge of interest in the topic of linguistic politeness. Until then pragmatics was treated a sort of ragbag, a waste basket designed to contain the overflow from semantics. Pragmatics has since established itself as a socially relevant science, or rather an ecologically sound science which demonstrates the frameworks and theories of linguistic politeness. The second development is an increasing internationalization and urbanization which provides people with many more opportunities to speak to each other and results in a heightened awareness of the importance of linguistic politeness, if no other reason than to avoid potential conflicts in communication. Following the theories and frameworks first proposed by such linguistics as Grice, Austin and Searle, the seminal studies in linguistic politeness were performed by Lakoff(1973), Leech(1983), Brown and Levinson(1987) and Fraser and Nolen(1981). Based on their studies, a great deal of work has been done in the literature of politeness. It has turned out to be an elaboration for further development of the four original studies. but inside Korea, research on linguistic politeness is usually conducted from the angle of typology, syntax and morphology except for a few scholars. This paper reviews the four pioneering works and their approaches to an account of linguistic politeness and contributes to new directions for future politeness studies, pointing out the areas neglected by other domestic ad foreign scholars. It strongly suggests that there are closer relations between politeness and honorifics, between 'defocusing' and indirectness, between indirectness and the longer forms, and between power and politeness investment, than in the earlier studies indicated.
