Vol.11 No.4
The purpose of this study was to examine whether small group discussion about prosocial picture books was effective for promoting young children`s prosocial behaviors. This study attempted to construct effective discussion strategies through small group discussions in which young children could understand both characters` helping and sharing behaviors and helped and shared feelings. The research questions were proposed as follows: Do small-group discussion about prosocial picture books encourage young children to help others? Do small-group discussion about prosocial picture books encourage young children to share things with others? The participants of this study were 36 preschoolers at the age of five who attended a kindergarten in metropolitan D city. They were 18 boys and 18 girls. The study procedure was consisted of a pilot study, pretest, experiment and posttest which lasted for eleven weeks from September 24 through December 19, 2003. The small-group discussion strategies about prosocial picture books were developed by the researchers. The instrument for prosocial behaviors was revised by the researchers on the basis of Iannotti(1985)`s study. After pretest and posttest were carried out, ANCOVA was carried out with the pretest result as a covariable. The results of the study and their implications were as follows: First, the experimental group that was engaged in small-group discussions about prosocial picture books offered more helping hands to others than the control group did. This indicated that the discussion activities served to facilitate children`s empathy and gave them a chance to be responsible for specific roles. Second, the experimental group shared things with others better than the control group did. They seem to learn to share with others in the course of exchanging their opinions regarding conflicting situations and information. Over all, the study implies that discussions in small group had a better effect on encouraging prosocial behaviors than reading prosocial picture books only.

Vol.24 No.17
Objectives This study aimed to analyze how picture books discuss and represent children's bodies and health, as well as to uncover their underlying meanings, utilizing the concepts of knowledge, power, and discourse by the post-structuralist M. Foucault. Methods To achieve this, a discourse analysis was conducted using Foucault's techniques of discipline, surveillance, and normalization on 132 picture books selected through the search of the National Library for Children and Young Adults. Results The findings revealed that these picture books reflect the standards and norms set by our society regarding children's bodies and health. They utilize the authority and status of specialized knowledge in fields such as medicine, nutrition, psychology, and sports science to regulate children's bodies by presenting different arrangements of healthy or vulnerable bodies and establishing hierarchical knowledge to secure a standardized body position. The multiplicity of voices, including the voice of narrators, illustrations, and the voice of adult readers, intertwined with gazes between characters, exerted the power of reward and punishment, allowing child readers to self-regulate regarding their bodies and health. Moreover, the ideal characteristics of children's bodies and health were reinforced through powerful discourses structured around expectations, commands, conventions, norms, declarations, and linked to broader societal discourses such as risk and deficiency, differentiated by age and gender. Conclusions The meaning and discourse surrounding children's healthy bodies were discussed within the context of how societal discourses, including risk and deficiency discourses based on age and gender, also regulate children's bodies and health. Picture books by adopting a narrative form can become a mechanism of power that (re)produces and disseminates knowledge and discourse about children.

This qualitative study explores the development of young Korean children`s reading stances and responses to children`s books and discusses their literacy development in relation to school reading experiences. Rosenblatt`s theory (1978) of aesthetic and efferent stances is used to characterize the relationship between the reader and the text. A teacher`s reading stances in the official school world are analyzed and their relationships to children`s stances and responses are discussed. The teacher s efferent stance encouraged her children`s responses to he efferent as well. It also influenced children`s assumptions and expectations about the teacher`s reading activities, so that the children came to view these activities only as ways of obtaining factual knowledge and practicing literacy skills. The children`s own interests and intentions during free play time are described in order to understand children`s reading stances in the unofficial school world. The children showed various types of stances during free play time even though they were encouraged to take only one type of stance, i.e., an efferent stance, in the official school world. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for classroom practice and literacy research.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the small group science activity has an effect on young children`s creativity and verbal ability. Forty, five years old kinderg arteners in D city participated for the study. They were divided into twenty children of the experimental group and twenty children of the control group. To measure the children`s creativity and verbal ability, Torrance Test of Creative Thinking(1999) and Bak(1997)`s young children`s verbal ability tests were used. The experimental and the control group participated in the science activities two times in a week for each group, total twenty times for ten weeks. However, the experimental group was subdivided into four small groups with five children each. The control group participated in the large group science activity. Data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program. Followings are the results of the study; Firstly, the experimental group showed more improvement in creativity than the control group. All the sub-elements of the creativity, which are fluency, originality, abstractness, elaborateness and resistance, are all improved. Secondly, the experimental group showed more improvement in the vocabulary, verbal understanding and verbal expression than the control group. Each of the young children participating in the small group science activities explored in unique ways and tried out lots of new ideas. The verbal ability of young children improved because they participated many verbal interactions and problem solving processes with the opportunity to express their opinions spontaneously.
