Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic disease of the alimentary tract including small and large intestine. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the IBD, and its typical features are mucosal inflammation and loss of barrier function. Although the mechanisms for IBD induction and progression are not completely understood, studies using animal models of UC have a good benefit to understand the clue of inflammation-associated colorectal carcinogenesis. It is important to choose suitable animal model according to various project.

Background: Superior colliculus is a part of midbrain, and participates in the visual reflexes, It receives afferent fibers from optic nerve, visual cortex, and spinotectal tract. After optic deprivation, the microscopic structure of the superior colliculus changed. Calcium-binding proteins (CBPs) Play an important role in the neuronal protection, differentiation and reorganization of the central nervous system, Objectives and Methods: The effects of neonatal retinal deafferentation on a CBPs, calbindm D-28k (CB), Parvalbumin (PB) and calretimn (CR), and the existence of colocalization between the CBPs were examined immunohistochemically in the rat superior colliculus. Results: On the experimental (contralateral to enucleation) side of superior colliculus, the number of CB-immunoreactive (IR) cells was reduced (77.4% compared to control), but not fibers. The number of PB-IR neurons and fibers was also reduced on the experimental side (88.5% compared to control), In the other hand, the CR-IR cells were dramatically increased (642% compared to control), but CR-IR fibers were markedly decreased on the experimental side. The colocalization between CB-CR and PV-CR was rarely observed in the superior colliculus Conclusion: These results suggest that the changes of retinotectal projection may alter the expressional pattern of CBPs in different manners; relatively stable in CB- and PV-IR neurons and plastic in CR-IR neurons.

The Arboretum was founded In 1967, and the mission and first strategy plans for five years were made In 2000 to cover all aspects of the scientific, conservation and education value of the living plant collections worldwide. However the first strategy plans have limitations such as the poor budget and man power. Therefore, we set up the second strategy plans for 2008-2012. Recommendations regarding this second plan was results of planning by Arboretum staff, dean, officers and professors of university of Agriculture Life Sciences, and the parties of local governments as province Gyeonggi-do and Suwon city. Seven areas of focus over the next five years were identified for the Arboretum with specific targets, strategies. and action steps within each focus areas. Each components of the plan were made in order to enable us to keep carrying out the vision and mission of The Arboretum.

Post-traumatic meniscal ossicle due to avulsion fracture of medial meniscus was very rare. They were often associated with meniscal tear, but caused symptoms without a tear, by mass effect from protruding meniscal contour. So it had to be differential diagnosised with free loose body in the knee joint. We experienced a symptomatic meniscal ossicle due to post-traumatic avulsion fracture of the posterior horn of medial meniscus, and managed with open reduction, internal fixation with screw and washer after arthroscopic examination. We report a rare case of meniscal ossicle in detail with literature.

Purpose: There are few studies have been conducted over the causes and results in connection with the overgrowth following fractures of the tibial shaft in children. So we purposed to identify factors that affect the overgrowth and spontaneous correction of angular, rotational deformity that may arise in the process of treatment. Materials and Methods: We kept watch on 28 children with fractured tibial shaft for more than 24 months who were treated after March, 1994. For the study of correlationship between overgrowth, angular, rotational deformity correction rate and such factors as fracture site, type, age, sex, handedness. Friedman Test, Wilcoxen signed rank test, linear and non-linear regression analysis were employed. Statistical value was calculated by SPSS program, significant level$lt;0.05. In order to figure out the rates of overgrowth and angular deformity correction, a comparison was made with through scanogram, changes of sagittal, coronal plane were observed through the serial radiographies and rotational correction rate was measured by comparing thigh-foot angle with intact side when final follow-up. Results: Overgrowth on average stands at 6.36±2.99mm and by fracture area, showed a significant overgrowth of 10.5±2.38 mm(p=0.030) at proximal shaft fracture. As the age gets higher, overgrowth(r=-0.799), rotational correction rate(r=+0.556) gets scantier. Correlation between overgrowth, angular, rotational correction rate and fracture type, sex, handedness turned out to be statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Only age and fracture site are affectd significantly correction of angular, rotational deformity and overgrowth.
