일본에서는 1970년대부터 1980년대에 걸쳐 각지에서 지방공립미술관이 정비되었다. 그 동안 미술관은 일본인의 생활의 일부로 착실하게 정착해 왔지만 문제도 적지 않다. 우선 미술관이 가진 표상의 권력 등이 상대화한다는 문제가 있다. 다음으로 미술관과 박물관 사이에 틈이 있는 것도 문제이다. 한편으로, 미술관은 연구기관인가 단지 대여 갤러리인가를 묻는 목소리도 있다. 나아가서는 학예원의 전문직 자리도 불명확하다. 이러한 문제는 결국 일본인에게 미술관은 무엇인가라는 물음과 연결된다. 일본인은 앞서의 경험에 근거해서 이 물음에 답해야 할 것이다. 최근 수년간 우리의 경힘을 더듬어서 21세기의 새로운 미술관상을 모색하고자 하는 움직임이 있다. 예를 들면, 국립민족학박물관에서는 文化資源硏究센터를 만들어 소유보다는 이용에 원동력을 둔 새로운 문화시설의 가능성을 찾으려고 하고 있다. 동시에 전국의 학예원들을 연결해 미술관ㆍ박물관에 관한 연구회를 조직해서 기성의 미술관ㆍ박물관의 틀을 넘어서려는 시도를 착수하고 있다. In Japan, so many public art museums were built by the local governments in the 1970s and the 1980s, Since then, art museums have steadily taken root in everyday lives of Japanese. However art museums in Japan still have a lot of problems, First of all, how to control the power of representation is one of such problems. Another problem is that there is a gap between museums of art and museums of the other subjects like those of history, cultures, natural history, science and so on, Thirdly, a serious question is posed to us that Japanese art museums are a research institute or just a rental gallery, Moreover, how to position curators is not clearly settled yet, All these problems are deeply connected with a radical question as follows: What are art museums for Japanese people? Today, it is high time that we Japanese should answer to this question based on our proper history and experiences of art museums. Recently, we can observe a new trend hying to search for a new style of art museums of the 21st century after reviewing our own history and experiences, For example, the National Museum of Ethnology newly set up the Research Center for Cultural Resources to seek for a new type of cultural institutions keeping more interests in how to use objects than in only possessing to display them. On the other hand, the RCCR proposed to curators in both museums of art and museums of the other subjects to form the team, for joint research bridging these two kinds of museums. This project tries to deconstruct the existing framework of museums in Japan.
