Objectives Since the health insurance coverage for traditional Korean medicine is very low, some physicians and researcher have suggested that government’s institutional support is needed for korean medicine field. Therefore We examine the use of traditional medicine and western medicine in Taiwan, which operates a similar health insurance system to Korea. Methods We selected several studies from Pubmed and NHIRD, that could be used to numerically evaluate the use of traditional medicine. We reviewed the current status of medical use in Taiwan and compare it with that of Korea. Results Through a total of 87 studies, We found that 26.59%∼31% of Taiwanese use Traditional medical institutions more than once a year, and the use of traditional medicine has been increasing since 2000. In adults than children, in women than men, the use rate of traditional medicine was high. Especially, herbal medicine was the most common intervention, accounting for 70% of traditional medical care. Conclusions The core of low insurance coverage for traditional Korean medicine is in lack of coverage for herbal medicine. Taiwan’s case shows that the unmet demand for traditional Korean medicine of the Korean population can exist widely. (J Korean Med Rehabil 2018;28(1):133-144)

Objectives: To examine the fundamental characteristics of interventional clinical trials registered in the CRIS (Clinical Research Information Service) database. Methods: We systematically analyzed the status of Korean medical interventions using the search function of the CRIS database. Results: From 2010 to January 2020, 267 Korean medicine-related clinical trials were registered with CRIS. The studies, which included many randomized trials (80.14%), focused primarily on demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture and Korean herbal remedies. Most of these studies were government-sponsored and researcher-led clinical trials, but a few were company-sponsored trials. All trials were small and need improvement. Conclusion: This study reviews the current status of clinical trials in the field of Korean medicine and the basic data that can be used to create evidence-based Korean medicine.

Methods: Patients were treated for 3 months with Modified Er-Xian Decoction and their therapeutic effects were evaluated through thyroid function tests and Spleen-Kidney deficiency Questionnaire. Results: Initial improvement was apparent after the administration of Modified Er-Xian Decoction. After 3 months of treatment, the patient 's Spleen-Kidney deficiency index improved significantly, and thyroid hormone levels returned to normal. Conclusions: In this case report, symptoms and biochemical improvement were confirmed based on a single herbal medicine prescription for subclinical hypothyroidism. It is necessary to verify the effect of this prescription through well - established clinical trials.

Objectives We analyzed the trends of government-funded research on Kampo medicine in Japan to provide advanced evidence to R&D support policy for Korean medicine, and to introduce new research fields and trends to the researchers. Methods We reviewed the researches on Kampo medicine through ‘research-er.jp’ and ‘KAKEN’ database which contain R&D status in Japan and scientific research funding project issued by the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Results Since 1976, government-funded research on Kampo medicine has been continuously announced, and now 533 tasks have been completed or are in progress. The average duration of the study is 2.54 years, but it has been prolonged to 3.52 years in recent years. 4∼5 million yen was supported per project for laboratory research, and an average of 44,342 thousand yen was supported per project for specialized laboratory research and clinical research. Conclusions Despite the absence of systematically supporting departments, the researches on Kampo medicine in Japan were qualitatively superior since they focused on providing the scientific basis for clinical application. As competition in the world's traditional medicine market becomes more intense, it is necessary to improve the competitiveness of Korean medicine. Therefore, a keen interest in Korean medicine and active support from the government is needed. (J Korean Med Rehabil 2018;28(1):121-131)
