Language can not be separated from culture. Literature in some way reflects the society and culture of the day. Reading literary works encourages students to become broadly aware of the social, political and historical events. Therefore, without the deep understanding of the social and cultural background of the people who speaks English as their mother tongue, the creative English learning is not possible. In the view of the English acquisition through the understanding of culture, English and American poetry may provide a particularly appropriate way of stimulating English acquisition. Because it is an authentic English acquisition material. In the English teaching in English & American poetry classroom, to understand a poem students need to know about the author's life and the cultural or historical information in a poem. In poem-reading activities, students should answer comprehension questions about the meaning of certain words or phrases in the poem. And in post-reading activities, students should paraphrase the meaning of a poem into English and discuss it with other students. The teacher should make the students use English in the classroom to enhance their communicative competence. And the teacher also should devise various ways to set up the conditions for students to interact directly with the target language.
Gertrude Stein과 Ernest Hemingway의 소설에 나타난 Style과 Emotion의 공감대

Gertrude Stein was a writer with a training in William James's psychology and visual art that made her uniquely attentive to modernist problems. In her work, she tried to catch the flowing present and to express the total immediate experience. For this, she practised automatic writing in her work. She expressed the floating sense of the individual in the continuous present by using ‘~ing’ form. She actually used the continuous present in Three Lives and The Making of Americans. And also she tried to arose the emotional sympathy to the readers through the revolutionary experiments of the painters of her day, particularly the cubists. Hemingway was profoundly influenced by the Steins's automatic writings, Williams James's special feature of thought, and Impressionist visual art. Hemingway's primary concern was to communicate the sympathetic emotion to the readers. He creates distinctive scenes and images by means of the elements which have generated in him an emotional charge, and which he then arranges in his written account to recreate the experience for his readers. In his fiction, he used a clear and terse style and repeated expression as part of his strategy in representing the reader's sympathetic emotion. And he aroused the powerful emotional impact to the readers through this style.
