Induction of heme oxygenase-1 protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an anti-oxidant enzyme normally upregulated in response to oxidant injury. Here we determined the role of HO-1 in podocyte apoptosis in glomeruli of streptozotocin-treated rats and in immortalized mouse podocytes cultured in media containing normal or high glucose. HO-1 expression, its activity, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 protein, and active caspase-3 fragments were all significantly higher in isolated glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. These increases were inhibited by zinc protoporphyrin treatment of the rats or by HO-1 siRNA treatment of the podocytes in culture. The number of apoptotic cells was also significantly increased in the glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. Inhibition of HO-1 accentuated the increase in apoptotic cells both in vivo and in vitro. Our findings suggest that HO-1 expression protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions.

The paper describes a CMOS analog circuit design tool, K_ACD(Kumoh_Analog Circuits Designer), and design results. The K_ACD was developed for automatic design of fundamental analog circuit blocks such as comparator, unbuffered OP AMP, and buffered OP AMP. For given specifications and process parameters, it computes bias currents, transistor sizes, voltage gain, and power dissipation, then SPICE simulations are automatically carried out. Some design examples show usefulness of the K_ACD in analog circuit designs.

Dylan Thomas 詩 硏究

Dylan Thomas was in a rather peculiar position among the contemporary poets. Pound, Eliot, Yeats and Auden all represent an intellectualization of the poetic world or an implied view of poetry as social achievement. On the other hand, Thomas takes an attitude of antithetical movement such as William Blake. Thomas’ whole interest was in the self-exploration. He, casting light on the dark interior of the self, tried to discover himself. His poetry explores the subject of birth and death, creation and destruction in terms of primitivism, pantheism and finally love of man, accepting and celebrating the tragic human condition. In his early poetry based upon the “womb and tomb” motif, he attempted to overcome the fear of death by firmly believing the coexistence of birth and death. What Thomas found to symbolize this belief was the womb where birth and death seems to coexist. And he considered death as a part of nature’s process. His poetry of the middle period shows a greater involvement with others, as “A Refusal to Mourn the Death” and “After the funeral”, he does not deny the death of all things, including himself, but in anticipating this necessary destruction within poems and by participating in it, Thomas can overcome the fear of death. And the final period, characterized by longer, narrative poems like “Fern Hill” or “Poem in October” is one of acceptance of humanity and the tragic condition of man, or a movement toward affirmation and a conditional consent to the presence of death in life. Though Thomas dealt with the familiar theme to us, he dealt with it in a strange, surprising way. His originality and worthiness lies in the technique rather than themes. In talking of the change of technique, Thomas’s idiosyncratic language in his early poem is the reflection both of joy in playing with words and of a necessity to express the ineffable unity of the universe. While Thomas’ middle period shows a greater concern with the specifics of eternal reality displaced the primary vision, so that in the later poems ultimate realities are approached through nature and daily life instead of visionary imagery.

PR 실무자와 기자의 언론관계에 관한 상호 인식 비교 연구

Media relations to take deep effect to audience is the highest priority for public relations practitioners to increase the high contact with their public. Indeed, this process remains the misunderstanding and prejudice between journalists and PR practitioners. This study is attempt to compare the perception based on the pre-study done by Ho-Chang Shin in 1994. Questionnaires were sent to 200 journalists and 200 public relations practitioners and 102 journalists(response rate=51.0%) and 127(63.5%) practitioners were replied. Here are the findings : First, the field of media relations consists mainly of obtaining publicity is considered important by journalist and public relations practitioner. And they think that the negative factor such as treats including dining or restriction of press release is not important. This result shows the different thing compared to the pre-study. Second, public relations practitioners and journalists disagree regarding the point of view of media relations. Practitioners perceive journalists a specialized and high-responsibility man. but journalist has lower respects about themselves than practitioner perceive them. The two group reported different perception of public relations` view. It is found that practitioner has more positive thinking on the public relations` view than journalist. In the correlations, practitioners` and journalists` perception on each other shows significant difference. PR practitioner recognize journalist as a partner at a same level. But journalist consider PR practitioner and information source. Third, practitioner and journalist have similarity on their ethical value. If its degree is low, it is possible that activities such as treat, presents and request to correct news to enhance relationship between two groups. Fourth, in media relations, practitioners are tends to corporate with journalists for company`s positive image. And they also react objectively to the crisis. But journalist is reluctant to agree the various activities of PR practitioners in media relations. Fifth, the result here for media relations model of Korea compared to pre-study can be suggested as follows : ① journalist-oriented, ② media coverage, ③ information distortion, ④ information management, and ⑤ positive public relations.

울금(鬱金)에서 분리된 demethoxycurcumin이 백서의 혈관재협착에 미치는 효과

The pathobiologic process of arterial stenosis following balloon angioplasty continues to be an enigmatic problem in clinical settings. This study investigates the ability of demethoxycurcumin, a curcuminoid isolated from Radix Curcumae, to attenuate balloon injury-induced neointima(NI) formation in the rat carotid artery. It was found that demethoxycurcumin induced inducible heme oxygenase(HO-1) expression and inhibited dose-dependently cellular proliferation in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Perivascular application of demethoxycurcumin immediately following injury significantly reduced NI area and NI thickness 2 weeks post-injury. Interestingly, treatment with tin-protoporphyrin IX, a HO inhibitor, reversed the effects of demethoxycurcumin on NI formation. These results implicate demethoxycurcumin as a potent new therapeutic agent that is capable of reducing post-angioplasty arterial stenosis through induction of the HO-1 expression.

The diagnostic requirements were suggested and explained regarding the systems of differentiation of symptoms and signs in the second year study of standardization and unification of the terms and conditions used for diagnosis in oriental medicine. The systems were as follows; - differential diagnosis according to condition of body fluid, differentiation of syndromes according to the state of qi and blood, differential diagnosis according to relative excessiveness or deficiency of yin and yang(氣血陰陽津液辨證) - differentiation of diseases according to pathological changes of the viscera and their interrelation - analyzing and differentiating of febrile diseases in accordance with the theory of the six channels(傷寒辨證) The individual diagnosis pattern was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following order : another name(異名), notion of diagnosis pattern, index of differentiation of symptoms and signs(辨證指標), the main point of diagnosis, analysis of diagnosis pattern(證候分析), discrimination of diagnosis pattern(證候鑑別), a way of curing a diseases(治法), prescription(處方), herb in common use(常用藥物), diseases appearing the diagnosis pattern(常見疾病), documents(文獻調査). This study was carried out on the basis of the Chinese documents and references.

본 논문에서는 고성능 표면탄성파 필터의 최적 설계를 위하여 다양한 IDT(interdigital transducer) 구조의 필터를 제작하고 각각의 주파수 응답특성을 비교 분석하였다. 기본 구조외에 MSC(micro strip-coupler), double split, reflector, ground line 등의 구조를 일반적으로 널리 사용되고 있는 Y-Z cut l-N(LiNbO3) 기판 위에 형성시켰다. 제작된 소자의 중심주파수, 통과 대역, 삽입손실등을 측정하였으며, 주파수 응답에 기초한 기존 모델의 효용성을 논의하였다. Effects of IDT structures on frequency responses of SAW filters are investigated to achieve a high performance SAW filter, Various types of IDTS, such as MSC(multistrip-coupler), double split, reflector, and ground line, are designed and patterned on a widely used Y-Z cut LN(LiNbO3) substrate. Center frequencies, band widths, and insertion losses are measured and compared. Invalidity of the conventional model based on the impulse response model is also discussed.

경남지역 주요 약용작물의 해충 종류 조사

경남지역 주요 약용 작물 5종에 발생하는 해충과 기타 해로운 동물의 종류를 1999년과 2000년 2개년 동안 조사하였다. 홍화에서는 우엉수염진딧물과 꽃노랑총채벌레, 대만총채벌레, 오이총채벌레, 알락수염노린재를 포함한 13과 16속 20종이 확인되었으며, 산약에서는 꽃노랑총채벌레, 대만총채벌레, 애긴노린재를 포함한 6과 7속 10종이, 두충에서는 차주머니나방을 포함하여 6과 8속 8종이, 당귀에서는 대만총채벌레, 꽃노랑총채벌레, 차응애, 점박이응애, 복숭아혹진딧물을 포함한 11과 15속 16종이, 길경에서는 담배거세미나방, 파밤나방을 포함하여 10과 11속 14종의 해충이 확인되었다. Insect pests and some important arthropod pests infesting five medicinal crops were surveyed in Gyeongnam province in 1999 and 2000. Nineteen species of 16 genera in 12 families including Vroleucon gobonis, Frankliniella occidentalis, F. intonsa, Tetranychus cinnabarinus, Thrips parmi, and Dolycoris baccarum were identified from safflower. Ten species of 7 genera in 6 families including F. occidentalis, F. intonsa, and Nysius plebejus from yam, 8 species of 8 genera in 6 families including Eumeta minuscula from hardy rubber-tree, 16 species of 14 genera in 11 families including F. occidentalis, F. intonsa, T. kanzawai, T. urticae and Myzus persicae from Angelica gigas, 15 species of 14 genera in 11 families including Spodoptera exigua, and S. litura from balloon flower.
