The first Cybathlon will be held in October 2016 and this contest is designed for developing prosthetic technologies. In this study, we analyzed the Cybathlon and from this analysis we researched advanced prosthetic technologies. In addition, we ascertained some ethical issues about post-human beings with prosthetic equipment, which could rehabilitate disabled people and even serve to enhance non-disabled people. Disability is only one of the inconveniences that a person must endure, but everyone has some sort of inconvenience to endure. We found the possibilities of dissolving boundaries between people with disabilities and their able-bodied counterparts through the Cybathlon and prosthetic devices. The features and role of our body itself will be expanded with the help of these future technologies. Engineers, inventors and designers are making better prostheses for disabilities, but these could help not only disabled people but also every non-disabled people. The dominant ethical debates that appear in bioethics and human- related enhancement are reliability, authenticity and autonomy. Reliability and autonomy are the question of being safe and controllable. In this study, we want to raise a question on authenticity: ‘if a person with a powered-prosthesis sets a better record, should we admit it?’
Constructing Images through Art Exhibitions

The cultural nationalist endeavor to preserve Korean culture and find “Koreanness” in many realms applied to art and culture. The search for Korean identity invigorated the local color debate. This paper examines the political implications of the local color debate, focusing on the Chosǒn Art Exhibition which was established and funded by Japanese colonial authorities in order to minimize the organized efforts of Korean nationalist artists at Sǒhwa Hyǒphoe. This paper examines the ways in which the Chosǒn Art Exhibition hinders the search for Koreans’ own identity in uncontrolled venues as the Sǒhwa Hyǒphoe Exhibition. The Cultural Rule tried to achieve such control subtly, through the establishment of cultural sites such as the Chosǒn Art Exhibition, in which artists could take part and be policed at the same time. The Chosǒn Art Exhibition became the very influential venue for the artists and the jury of the Japanese authorities encouraged to search for the local color of Chosǒn which caters to their taste. As a result, the primitive or rural self-images and images influenced by Japanese culture came to dominate the Korean artworks. This paper tries to show the ways in which Japan intervened in the development of Korea’s self-image through the modern institution of art exhibitions.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mouse fMRI is critically useful to investigate functions of mouse models. Until now, the somatosensory-evoked responses in anesthetized mice are often widespread and inconsistent across reports. Here, we adopted a ketamine and xylazine mixture for mouse fMRI, which is relatively new anesthetics in fMRI experiments. Forepaw stimulation frequency was optimized using cerebral blood volume (CBV)-weighted optical imaging (n = 11) and blood-oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) fMRI with a gradient-echo time of 16 ms at 9.4 T, and 4 Hz stimulation with 0.5 ms and 0.5 mA pulses induced the highest hemodynamic response. For 20-s 4-Hz unilateral forepaw stimulation, localized BOLD activity was consistently found in the contralateral primary forelimb somatosensory cortex (S1FL), while no significant change was observed in the ipsilateral S1FL. The mean magnitude was 1.44 ± 0.20% SEM (n = 9) in the contralateral S1FL and 0.69 ± 0.10% in the contralateral thalamus. The variability of evoked fMRI responses across sessions was investigated by comparing with resting state fMRI (rsfMRI) functional connectivity (FC). Evoked responses in S1FL were correlated positively with rsfMRI FC between bilateral S1FL (r = 0.63 to 0.69) and negatively with FC between S1FL and the anterior cingulate cortex (r = −0.50 to −0.57), suggesting that rsfMRI FC is a good index of the evoked fMRI response and anesthetized animal condition. Finally, three weekly fMRI scans were performed in 5 mice, and localized activity was reproducibly observed in S1FL, with a success rate of 70–95%. In summary, our developed fMRI protocol can be used for mapping functions of mouse models.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Bilateral BOLD response induced by forepaw stimulation is observed under isoflurane. </LI> <LI> Ketamine and xylazine anesthesia is used for mouse fMRI. </LI> <LI> Forepaw stimulation of 4 Hz evokes the highest hemodynamic response. </LI> <LI> BOLD activation is reproducibly localized at the contralateral somatosensory cortex. </LI> <LI> Resting-state functional connectivity predicts evoked fMRI responses. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>The <I>Hebei Spirit</I> oil spill episode (December 7, 2007) has affected the western coastal area of South Korea; however, there is limited information on the potential toxicity of the oil spill to the ecosystem or humans. The potential toxicity of sediments collected from the affected area (<I>n</I> = 22) 2 years after the spill was evaluated. Acute lethal toxicity tests using <I>Vibrio fischeri</I> and <I>Moina macrocopa</I> and tests for genotoxicity and alteration of steroidogenesis using chicken DT40 cells and H295R cells, respectively, were conducted. Both crude and weathered oil extracts were evaluated in order to link the observed toxicity in the sediment extracts to the oil spill. Whereas toxicity to bacteria and daphnids was observed in only two elutriate samples, 10 of the 22 sediment extracts showed genotoxic potential in DT40 cells. The mechanisms of genotoxicity involved nucleotide excision repair (XPA–/), homologous recombination (RAD54–/–), and translesion synthesis pathways (REV3–/–). In addition, nine sediment extracts caused significantly greater production of E2 in H295R cells, and significant up-regulation of CYP19, CYP11B2, and 3βHSD2 by sediment extracts was observed. The pattern of toxicities observed in both crude and weathered oil samples was similar to that observed in the sediment extracts. The genotoxicicity and endocrine-disruption potential of the sediment extracts suggest a need for long-term followup for such toxicity in humans and wildlife in this area.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2011/esthag.2011.45.issue-17/es200724x/production/images/medium/es-2011-00724x_0003.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es200724x'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Characterization of Itraconazole Semisolid Dosage Forms Prepared by Hot Melt Technique
Shim, Sang-Young,Ji, Chang-Won,Sah, Hong-Kee,Park, Eun-Seok,Lee, Beom-Jin The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 2006 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.29 No.11
The objective of this study was to formulate itraconazole semisolid dosage forms and characterize their physicochemical properties. Itraconazole and excipients such as polysorbate 80, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, oils and organic acids were melted at $160^{\circ}C$. The fused solution was then cooled immediately at $-10^{\circ}C$ to make wax-like semisolid preparations. Their physicochemical attributes were first characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. The solubility of itraconazole in semisolid preparations and their dispersability in the simulated gastric fluid were also determined. Our semisolid preparations did not show any distinct endothermic peak of a crystalline form of itraconazole around $160-163^{\circ}C$. This suggested that it was changed into amorphous one, when it was formulated into semisolid preparations. In addition, the distinctive functional peaks and chemical shifts of itraconazole were well retained after processing into semisolid preparations. It could be inferred from the data that itraconazole was stable during incorporation into semisolid preparations by the hot melt technique. In particular, itraconazole semisolid preparations composed of polysorbate 80, fatty acids and organic acids showed good solubility and dissolution when dispersed in an aqueous medium. It was anticipated that the semisolid dosage forms would be industrially applicable to improving the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.
