Novel Associations between Related Proteins and Cellular Effects of High-Density Lipoprotein

Background and Objectives: Recent studies have examined the structure-function relationship of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). This study aimed to identify and rank HDL-associated proteins involved in several biological function of HDL. Methods: HDLs isolated from 48 participants were analyzed. Cholesterol efflux capacity, effect of HDL on nitric oxide production, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression were assessed. The relative abundance of identified proteins in the highest vs. lowest quartile was expressed using the normalized spectral abundance factor ratio. Results: After adjustment by multiple testing, six proteins, thyroxine-binding globulin, alpha-1B-glycoprotein, plasma serine protease inhibitor, vitronectin, angiotensinogen, and serum amyloid A-4, were more abundant (relative abundance ratio ≥2) in HDLs with the highest cholesterol efflux capacity. In contrast, three proteins, complement C4-A, alpha-2-macroglobulin, and immunoglobulin mu chain C region, were less abundant (relative abundance ratio <0.5). In terms of nitric oxide production and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression, no proteins showed abundance ratios ≥2 or <0.5 after adjustment. Proteins correlated with the functional parameters of HDL belonged to diverse biological categories. Conclusions: In summary, this study ranked proteins showing higher or lower abundance in HDLs with high functional capacities and newly identified multiple proteins linked to cholesterol efflux capacity.

We have developed a compact desktop-sized nanopatterning system driven by the Roll-to-Roll (R2R) nanoimprinting (NIL) principle. The system realizes the continuous and high-speed stamping of various nanoscale patterns on a large-area flexible substrate without resorting to ponderous and complicated instruments. We first lay out the process principle based on continuous NIL on a UV-curable resin layer using a flexible nanopatterned mold. We then create conceptual and specific designs for the system by focusing on two key processes, imprinting and UV curing, which are performed in a continuous R2R fashion. We build a system with essential components and optimized modules for imprinting, UV curing, and R2R conveying to enable simple but effective nanopatterning within the desktop volume. Finally, we demonstrate several nanopatterning results such as nanolines and nanodots, which are obtained by operating the built desktop R2R NIL system on transparent and flexible substrates. Our system may be further utilized in the scalable fabrication of diverse flexible nanopatterns for many functional applications in optics, photonics, sensors, and energy harvesters.
Rice WRKY11 Plays a Role in Pathogen Defense and Drought Tolerance

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Plants are frequently subjected to abiotic and biotic stresses, and WRKY proteins play a pivotal role in the response to such stress. <I>Os</I>WRKY11 is induced by pathogens, drought, and heat, suggesting a function in biotic and abiotic stress responses.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>This study identified <I>Os</I>WRKY11, a member of WRKY group IIc. It is a transcriptional activator that localized to the nucleus. Ectopic expression of <I>OsWRKY11</I> resulted in enhanced resistance to a bacterial pathogen, <I>Xanthomonas oryzae</I> pv. <I>oryzae</I>; resistance was compromised in transgenic lines under-expressing <I>OsWRKY11</I>. Ectopic expression of <I>OsWRKY11</I> resulted in constitutive expression of defense-associated genes, whereas knock-down (kd) of <I>OsWRKY11</I> reduced expression of defense-associated genes during pathogen attack, suggesting that <I>OsWRKY11</I> activates defense responses. <I>Os</I>WRKY11 bound directly to the promoter of <I>CHITINASE 2</I>, a gene associated with defense, and activated its transcription. In addition, ectopic expression of <I>OsWRKY11</I> enhanced tolerance to drought stress and induced constitutive expression of drought-responsive genes. Induction of drought-responsive genes was compromised in <I>OsWRKY11-</I>kd plants. <I>Os</I>WRKY11 also bound directly to the promoter of a drought-responsive gene, <I>RAB21</I>, activating its transcription. In addition, <I>Os</I>WRKY11 protein levels were controlled by the ubiquitin-proteasome system.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P><I>Os</I>WRKY11 integrates plant responses to pathogens and abiotic stresses by positively modulating the expression of biotic and abiotic stress-related genes.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (10.1186/s12284-018-0199-0) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>

One of the vital forces reshaping the global football business in recent years is stemming from China. In particular, a wave of Chinese ownership of European football clubs is not unheard of any longer. However, very little research has been done on this issue from sport management scholars. This study uses China’s overseas financial direct investment (ODI) to elucidate a sudden surge in the ownership of European football clubs. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore possible explanations for ODI activities of selected Chinese firms that have acquired European football clubs. Using Dunning’s ODI paradigm, this study attempts to carefully explain the reasons behind the Chinese firm’s ODI to acquire these football clubs. Nine Chinese firms that acquired football clubs during the 2014-2017 were examined. This study argues that the firms have explicit firm-specific reasons for ODI, while political influences appear to affect acquisition decisions. This study also argues that most firms have specific sport industry-seeking motivation. Further discussion was provided based on findings of this study.
전처리 공정에 따른 생활폐기물 소각 바닥재 내 중금속 및 염화물 특성에 관한 연구

우리나라는 2020 년까지 생활폐기물 직매립 제로(Zero)화를 추진하고 있다. 직매립 제로화란 생활폐기물 배출자 스스로 재활용품 분리배출을 통해 자원의 낭비를 최소화하고, 폐기물 발생량을 감량함으로써 직매립되는 자원을 최소화(Zero waste)하는 정책이다. 이에 따라 생활폐기물 재활용률 증가로 인해 직매립되는 생활폐기물의 비율은 감소되고 있으나, 소각되는 생활폐기물의 비율은 증가되고 있는 실정이다. 생활폐기물은 소각 시 바닥재와 비산재가 발생하는데, 발생량의 80 % 이상의 비중을 차지하는 바닥재는 골재와 물리적 특성이 유사하여 골재로 재활용하고자 하는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 그러나 바닥재는 중금속 및 염화물 등 다량의 유해물질을 함유하고 있어 적절한 전처리 없이 사용 시 환경에 악영향을 미친다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 바닥재를 재활용하기 위해 바닥재에 대한 전처리 연구를 진행하였으며, 바닥재를 전처리하는 방법에 있어서 세정 및 이산화탄소 강제숙성 공정을 단일로 적용했을 때와 복합적으로 적용했을 때의 바닥재 특성을 평가하여 최적의 전처리 방법을 도출하였다. 연구결과, 세정 공정에서의 바닥재의 최적 조건으로 고액비 1 : 10, 세정시간 60 분으로 선정되었으며, 최적 세정 조건이 적용된 바닥재의 염화물 농도 및 구리 농도는 안정화 기준을 만족하였다. 또한 이산화탄소 강제숙성 공정 적용 시 pH는 시간이 경과함에 따라 감소하였으며, 6가 크롬을 제외한 중금속 농도는 안정화 기준을 만족하였다. 특히, 복합적으로 적용했을 때 바닥재의 염화물 농도 및 중금속 농도는 24시간 경과 후 안정화 기준을 만족하였으며, pH는 15일 이후 급격히 감소하여 안정화 기준을 만족하였다. 이러한 결과로 복합적 전처리는 기존의 전처리보다 효율적으로 처리가 가능한 전처리 방법이라고 판단된다.
한국, 불가리아, 엘살바도르 강낭콩(Phaseolus vulgaris L.) 유전자원의 농업 및 종자 형질 비교

To compare agronomic and seed traits of 135 common bean landraces originating from Korea, Bulgaria, and El Salvador, we evaluated 20 morphological traits and performed principal component analysis (PCA). In the PCA, the first and second principal components accounted for 55.15% and 15.97% of the total variance, respectively. The first component showed a strong positive correlation with seed size and 100-seed weight, whereas the second component produced a strong negative correlation with days to flowering and days to maturity, indicating that these traits may explain the differences between landraces originating from different countries. Landraces from Korea showed higher variation in days to flowering and days to maturity; those from Bulgaria produced larger and heavier seeds; those from El Salvador produced smaller and lighter seeds and flowering and maturity occurred earlier. In addition, the landraces from El Salvador had relatively lower diversity compared to those from other countries, as they were grouped within a small cluster in the PCA. These evaluation results may provide important information for selecting breeding materials, and diversity analyses of landraces from different countries provide information for securing genetic resources.
