Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an increasingly common neuroendocrine cancer of the skin. Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) is one of the causative agents of MCC. The prevalence of MCPyV in primary MCC and sun-exposed non-MCC tumors has been known to have different results depending on where it was investigated. Objective: This study assesses the prevalence of MCPyV from primary MCC and sun-exposed non-MCC tumors in Korea. Methods: A molecular pathology study was performed on 7 tissue specimens of MCC, 1 tissue specimen of metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung, and 32 tissue specimens of non-MCC tumors occurring from sun-exposed areas [8 basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), 8 squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), 8 actinic keratoses (AKs), and 8 seborrheic keratoses (SKs)]. All specimens were analyzed to determine the presence of MCPyV-DNA using both polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time quantitative PCR. Immunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibody of MCPyV large T antigen (CM2B4) was also conducted. Results: Using both PCR, MCPyV sequences were detected in six of seven MCC tissue specimens (85.7%). Five (71%) of seven MCC tumors were immunoreactive for CM2B4. All five immunoreactive cases were positive for MCPyV. However, there was no association of MCPyV with BCC, SCC, AK, and SK. Conclusion: Our results implicate that MCPyV may contribute to the pathogenesis of primary MCC, not of non-MCC skin tumors in Korea, and the persons with MCPyV infection are unusual in Korea compared to other areas.

In this work, open stubs were fabricated on a polyether sulfone (PES) substrate, and their basic radio frequency (RF) characteristics were investigated for application to RF matching components of a flexible monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC). According to the results, an open stub employing coplanar waveguide (OSCPW) on PES exhibited much lower loss than that on silicon substrate. The OSCPW with a length of $500{\mu}m$ on PES showed capacitance values of 0.031 ~ 0.044 pF from 0.5 to 50 GHz. For application to a relatively high-value capacitive matching, an open stub employing a fishbone-type transmission line (OSFTTL) was fabricated on PES, and its characteristics were investigated. The OSFTTL showed much higher capacitance values than the OSCPW due to the high effective permittivity value. Specifically, the OSFTTL on PES showed capacitance values of 0.066 ~ 0.24 pF from 0.5 to 50 GHz, which are higher than those for the open stub on silicon substrate. The above results indicate that the OSCPW and OSFTTL on PES can be effectively used for application to low/high-value capacitive matching components on microwave and millimeter wave flexible MMIC. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work is the first report of the investigation of RF capacitive matching components on PES substrate.

Panax ginseng C.A. meyer (family: Araliaceae) is a perennial crop that has been widely used as a traditional medicine in Korea. Various P. ginseng cultivars exhibit a range of morphological and physiological traits as well as genetic diversity. To elucidate the differences of primary metabolism underlying such genetic diverstiy, we performed primary metabolite profiles in adventitious roots from five Panax ginseng cultivars using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The GC-MS analysis revealed eight primary metabolites as biomarkers and allowed us to classify the five cultivars into three groups. We selected three cultivars to represent each group and analyzed their transcriptomes by Illumina sequencing. We inspected 100 unigenes involved in seven primary metabolite biosynthesis pathways and found that 21 unigenes encoding 15 enzymes were differentially expressed among the three cultivars. Integrated analysis of transcriptomes and metabolomes revealed that the ginseng cultivars differ in primary metabolites as well as in the putative genes involved in the complex process of primary metabolic pathways. Our data derived from this integrated analysis provide insights into the underlying complexity of genes and metabolites that co-regulate flux through these pathways in ginseng.
Analysis of SOHOS Flash Memory with 3-level Charge Pumping Method
Seung-Dong Yang,Seong-Hyeon Kim,Ho-Jin Yun,Kwang-Seok Jeong,Yu-Mi Kim,Jin-Seop Kim,Young-Uk Ko,Jin-Un An,Hi-Deok Lee,Ga-Won Lee 대한전자공학회 2014 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.14 No.1
This paper discusses the 3-level charge pumping (CP) method in planar-type Silicon-Oxide-High-k-Oxide-Silicon (SOHOS) and Silicon-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon (SONOS) devices to find out the reason of the degradation of data retention properties. In the CP technique, pulses are applied to the gate of the MOSFET which alternately fill the traps with electrons and holes, thereby causing a recombination current Icp to flow in the substrate. The 3-level charge pumping method may be used to determine not only interface trap densities but also capture cross sections as a function of trap energy. By applying this method, SOHOS device found to have a higher interface trap density than SONOS device. Therefore, degradation of data retention characteristics is attributed to the many interface trap sites.

Background :There has been no report on the clinical features or natural history of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) in the Korean adult population. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of AIHA in the Korean adults. Methods :Patients newly diagnosed with AIHA between January 1994 and December 2010 at Chungnam National University Hospital were enrolled. Patient characteristics at diagnosis, response to treatment, and the natural course of the disease were documented. Results :Thirty-two patients (31 females and 1 male) with a median age of 48 years (range, 17-86) were enrolled. Of these, 21.9% were initially diagnosed with secondary AIHA. Thirteen patients (40.6%) were initially diagnosed with Evans' syndrome. Of the 29 patients who were placed on therapy, 27 (93.1%) showed a partial response or better. Nevertheless, 1 year after initiating treatment, 80% of the patients were still treatment-dependent. During follow-up (median length 14 months; range, 0.5-238), 14 of 25 patients (56.0%) who were initially diagnosed with primary warm antibody AIHA were found to have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Median time to conversion to SLE was 8.0 months (95% CI, 4.3-11.7), and the probabilities of conversion at 12 and 24 months were 63% and 91%, respectively. Younger age (<60 years) and a positive fluorescent anti-nuclear antibody test were associated with a higher probability of SLE conversion (P=0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). Conclusion :Primary AIHA is rare. Regular, vigilant testing for SLE is required in patients initially diagnosed with AIHA.
