In this paper, the image binarization method using standard specifications of the vehicle license plate to recognize characters on the plates is proposed. The global binarization method that had a threshold over entire image pixels cannot acuratelly binarize in case that local average brightness are varied to each plates characters regions. The proposed method uses the characters regions in the standard specifications of the korean vehicle license plates as binarization blocks. For installed cameras on national roads and parking areas, the computer simulation results showed average characters recognition rate about 5% higher than the otzu global binarization method.

This paper proposed an extracting algorithm of human facial components for the recognition of facial expressions. First face image is acquired using the Haar-like feature mask from an input image. The face image is divided into two images. One is the upper image including eye and eyebrow. The other is the lower image including mouth and jaw. The extraction of facial components, such as eye and mouth, begins getting eye image and mouth image. Then eigenfaces are produced by the PCA training process with learning images. An eigeneye and an eigenmouth are produced from eigenfaces. Result eye image is obtained by template matching the upper image with the eigeneye, and the mouth image is obtained by template matching the lower image with the eigenmouth. The simulation results show that the proposed method has superior extraction ratio than previous method.

<P>Herein, we report the formation of multinuclear Ir4, Ir6, and Ir12 supramolecular complexes via the bridge-driven self-assembly of tetrazolyl ligands. The synthesis of dimeric half-sandwich Ir units was made by the reaction of half-sandwich Ir units and tetrazolyl ligands in a molar ratio of 1:2. The use of different ligands containing multiple tetrazolyl units resulted in the formation of different Ir supramolecular architectures. The reaction of [Cp*IrCl2]2, AgOTf, and 1,2- or 1,3-ditetrazolyl benzene in a molar ratio of 1:3:1 resulted in the formation of rectangular tetranuclear or truncated trigonal pyramidal hexanuclear Ir complexes, respectively. On the other hand, the reaction of [Cp*IrCl2]2, AgOTf, and 1,3,5-tritetrazolyl benzene in a molar ratio of 6:18:4 produced a supramolecular dodecanuclear iridium complex. The molecular structure of the complex resembled a truncated tetrahedral structure with a large inner cavity, as determined by X-ray crystallography.</P><P>Tetra-, hexa-, and dodeca-nuclear Ir supramolecules have been synthesized from the bridge-driven self-assemblies of [Cp*IrCl2]2 and multitetrazolyl benzene in the presence of AgOTf.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most serious diseases in barley and wheat, as it is usually accompanied by the production of harmful mycotoxins in the grains. To identify FHB-resistant breeding resources, we evaluated 60 elite germplasm accessions of barley (24) and wheat (36) for FHB and mycotoxin accumulation. Assessments were performed in a greenhouse and five heads per accession were inoculated with both Fusarium asiaticum (Fa73, nivalenol producer) and F. graminearum (Fg39, deoxynivalenol producer) strains. While the accessions varied in disease severity and mycotoxin production, four wheat and one barley showed <20% FHB severity repeatedly by both strains. Mycotoxin levels in these accessions ranged up to 3.9 mg/ kg. FHB severity was generally higher in barley than in wheat, and Fa73 was more aggressive in both crops than Fg39. Fg39 itself, however, was more aggressive toward wheat and produced more mycotoxin in wheat than in barley. FHB severity by Fa73 and Fg39 were moderately correlated in both crops (r = 0.57/0.60 in barley and 0.42/0.58 in wheat). FHB severity and toxin production were also correlated in both crops, with a stronger correlation for Fa73 (r = 0.42/0.82 in barley, 0.70 in wheat) than for Fg39.

This experiment conducted to identify the changes of the response when white-back planthopper (WBPH, Sogatella furcifera), were inoculated in 10 days rice leaves after germination. We confirmed the difference between inoculated and uninfected plants by in the different time period (1day, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks after inoculation). Breeding rice and WBPH maintained at 26∼28℃ with 60 % humidity. 3 leaves plants (TN1, Cheongcheong, and Nagdong) were inoculated with 2∼3 instars WBPH. Harvested rice plant samples were completely dried in dark condition and then samples were completely immersed in a solution of methanol for 3 days under darkness. Dissolving in water and then de-fatted three times with hexane. 100 ppm samples were applied to HPLC, eluting with acetonitrile and 0.1 % acetic acid by C18 (5ph column Agilant) and detected at 254 nm. We confirmed the difference of peak using LC/MS/MS (API-2000). The results showed that three weeks from the day of inoculation was increased at the molecular weight 118.1, 264.2 and 364.2.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases that take significant roles in extracellular matrix degradation and therefore linked to several complications such as metastasis of cancer progression, oxidative stress, and hepatic fibrosis. Hizikia fusiformis, a brown algae, was reported to possess bioactivities, including but not limited to, antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory partly due to bioactive polysaccharide contents. In this study, the potential of H. fusiformis against cancer cell invasion was evaluated through the MMP inhibitory effect in HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells in vitro. H. fusiformis crude extract was fractionated with organic solvents, H₂O, n-BuOH, 85% aqueous MeOH, and n-hexane (n-Hex). The non-toxicity of the fractions was confirmed by MTT assay. All fractions inhibited the enzymatic activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 according to the gelatin zymography assay. Cell migration was also significantly inhibited by the n-Hex fraction. In addition, both gene and protein expressions of MMP-2 and -9, and tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMPs) were evaluated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. The fractions suppressed the mRNA and protein levels of MMP-2, MMP-9 while elevating the TIMP-1 and TIMP-2, with the H₂O fraction being the least effective while n-Hex fraction the most. Collectively, the n-Hex fraction from brown algae H. fusiformis could be a potential inhibitor of MMPs, suggesting the presence of various derivatives of polysaccharides in high amounts.

<▼1><P>Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Nonthyroidal illness (NTI), often observed in critically ill patients, arises through diverse alterations in the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. However, the causal relationship between underlying disease and NTI diversity in critically ill patients is poorly understood.</P><P>The aim of this study was to examine NTI severity and adverse outcomes in critically ill patients with respect to their underlying disease(s).</P><P>The medical records of 616 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) between January 2009 and October 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with known diseases or taking medications that affect thyroid function were excluded. All-cause mortality (ACM) and length of stay (LOS) in the ICU were assessed as adverse outcomes.</P><P>The enrolled patients (n = 213) were divided into the following 4 groups according to the severity of NTI at the nadir of their thyroid function test (TFT): normal (n = 11, 5.2%), mild NTI (n = 113, 53.1%), moderate NTI (n = 78, 36.6%), and severe NTI (n = 11, 5.2%). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age and gender. NTI severity showed a significantly strong association with ACM (<I>P</I> < 0.0001) and a significant positive association with LOS in the ICU (<I>P</I> = 0.031). After adjusting for age, gender, and current medications affecting TFT, increasing NTI severity led to increased ACM (odds ratio = 3.101; 95% confidence interval = 1.711–5.618; <I>P</I> < 0.0001). Notably, the prevalence of moderate-to-severe NTI was markedly higher in patients with infectious disease than in those with noninfectious disease (<I>P</I> = 0.012). Consistent with this, serum C-reactive protein levels were higher in patients with moderate-to-severe NTI (<I>P</I> = 0.016).</P><P>NTI severity is associated with increased ACM, LOS, and underlying infectious disease. Future studies will focus on the biological and clinical implications of infectious disease on the HPT axis.</P></▼2>
