Japan has emarged as a leading industrialized nation and an economic power in the world scene from the Far East. The rapid modernization and industrial growth have also left behind marks of environmental deterioration and incidents of human health effects. Considering organochlorine contaminants such as PCB, DDT arid HCH as markers of environmental quality, this introspective review examines the coastal health of Japan. A case study on these compounds in Seto-Inland Sea region in Japan revealed that the environmental load of persistent organochlorines, as typified by PCB is in coastal sediments. Temporal observations on these compounds in Japanese environment indicate that these classical pollutants have gradually decreased through years after restricting their usage. However, new environmental challenges are also recognized. Compounds such as Chlordane, TDCPP, PCDDs, PCDFs and coplanar PCBs still contaminate Japanese coastline. Analysis of Effects of Supplying Scent Related to Kagawa Prefecture on Driving Behavior

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of supplying the scent related to Kagawa prefecture on driving behavior and accident-reduction effects. It has been already revealed that supplying a scent of aroma oils is effective in the maintenances of drive’s concentration and arousal level in various kinds of studies. However, there are few studies that evaluate how much the effects of scents except for aroma oils are. Thus, in this study, considering that a lot of traffic fatal accidents are caused in Kagawa prefecture in Japan, we focused on reducing it by using the scent which is composed of the pine oil extracted from Matsu and Bonsai related to Kagawa prefecture. We conducted a driving simulator experiment and analyzed driving behavior against a risk event in the two conditions of supplying the scent or not. Additionally, we performed the simulation analysis based on time-series reliability model proposed by authors in a previous study to quantify the accident-reduction effects by supplying the scent. We found that there was a significant shortening in braking reaction time when supplying the scent. As a result, the accident-reduction effects of 43.8 % by supplying a scent was shown.

Objective: Although radiation therapy (RT) and concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT)are the global standards for adjuvant therapy treatment in cervical cancer, many Japaneseinstitutions choose chemotherapy (CT) because of the low frequency of irreversible adverseevents. In this study, we aimed to clarify the trends of adjuvant therapy for intermediate/highriskcervical cancer after radical surgery in Japan. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted by the Japanese Gynecologic OncologyGroup to 186 authorized institutions active in the treatment of gynecologic cancer. Results: Responses were obtained from 129 facilities. Adjuvant RT/CCRT and intensitymodulatedRT were performed in 98 (76%) and 23 (18%) institutions, respectively. On theother hand, CT was chosen as an alternative in 93 institutions (72%). The most commonregimen of CT, which was used in 66 institutions (51%), was a combination of cisplatin/carboplatin with paclitaxel. CT was considered an appropriate alternative option to RT/CCRTin patients with risk factors such as bulky tumors, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascularinvasion, parametrial invasion, and stromal invasion. The risk of severe adverse events wasconsidered to be lower for CT than for RT/CCRT in 109 institutions (84%). Conclusion: This survey revealed a variety of policies regarding adjuvant therapy amonginstitutions. A clinical study to assess the efficacy or non-inferiority of adjuvant CT iswarranted.

Swarming and mating behaviors of a mayfly species, Ephemera orientalis Mclachlan, 1875 were observed in 2015, 2016, and 2018 at a river bank of the Asahi River, Japan. Males started to make swarms between late April and middle May in 2016 and 2018. The numbers of mated pairs in a swarm correlated with the numbers of flying males in a swarm in 2016 and 2018. Swarms were formed during a limited period at dusk most probably because that interval is free from natural enemies. Males competed with each other to copulate with females in swarms. We clarified the function of the forelegs of males, which are significantly longer than those of females. Males used their forelegs to hold up a female from below. Besides forelegs, males have longer tails than females. We will discuss why sexual differences are found in these traits. Our results represent the first observation of swarm mating behavior in E. orientalis.
