Accuracy of artificial intelligence-assisted landmark identification in serial lateral cephalograms of Class III patients who underwent orthodontic treatment and two-jaw orthognathic surgery

        Mihee Hong,Inhwan Kim,Jin-Hyoung Cho,Kyung-Hwa Kang,Minji Kim,Su-Jung Kim,Yoon-Ji Kim,Sang-Jin Sung,Young Ho Kim,Sung-Hoon Lim,Namkug Kim,Seung-Hak Baek 대한치과교정학회 2022 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.52 No.4

Objective: To investigate the pattern of accuracy change in artificial intelligence-assisted landmark identification (LI) using a convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm in serial lateral cephalograms (Lat-cephs) of Class III (C-III) patients who underwent twojaw orthognathic surgery. Methods: A total of 3,188 Lat-cephs of C-III patients were allocated into the training and validation sets (3,004 Lat-cephs of 751 patients) and test set (184 Lat-cephs of 46 patients; subdivided into the genioplasty and non-genioplasty groups, n = 23 per group) for LI. Each C-III patient in the test set had four Lat-cephs: initial (T0), pre-surgery (T1, presence of orthodontic brackets [OBs]), post-surgery (T2, presence of OBs and surgical plates and screws [S-PS]), and debonding (T3, presence of S-PS and fixed retainers [FR]). After mean errors of 20 landmarks between human gold standard and the CNN model were calculated, statistical analysis was performed. Results: The total mean error was 1.17 mm without significant difference among the four timepoints (T0, 1.20 mm; T1, 1.14 mm; T2, 1.18 mm; T3, 1.15 mm). In comparison of two time-points ([T0, T1] vs. [T2, T3]), ANS, A point, and B point showed an increase in error (p < 0.01, 0.05, 0.01, respectively), while Mx6D and Md6D showeda decrease in error (all p < 0.01). No difference in errors existed at B point, Pogonion, Menton, Md1C, and Md1R between the genioplasty and non-genioplasty groups. Conclusions: The CNN model can be used for LI in serial Lat-cephs despite the presence of OB, S-PS, FR, genioplasty, and bone remodeling.

Accuracy of one-step automated orthodontic diagnosis model using a convolutional neural network and lateral cephalogram images with different qualities obtained from nationwide multi-hospitals

        Sunjin Yim,Sungchul Kim,Inhwan Kim,Jae-Woo Park,Jin-Hyoung Cho,Mihee Hong,Kyung-Hwa Kang,Minji Kim,Su-Jung Kim,Yoon-Ji Kim,Young Ho Kim,Sung-Hoon Lim,Sang Jin Sung,Namkug Kim,Seung-Hak Baek 대한치과교정학회 2022 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.52 No.1

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of one-step automated orthodontic diagnosis of skeletodental discrepancies using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and lateral cephalogram images with different qualities from nationwide multi-hospitals. Methods: Among 2,174 lateral cephalograms, 1,993 cephalograms from two hospitals were used for training and internal test sets and 181 cephalograms from eight other hospitals were used for an external test set. They were divided into three classification groups according to anteroposterior skeletal discrepancies (Class I, II, and III), vertical skeletal discrepancies (normodivergent, hypodivergent, and hyperdivergent patterns), and vertical dental discrepancies (normal overbite, deep bite, and open bite) as a gold standard. Pre-trained DenseNet-169 was used as a CNN classifier model. Diagnostic performance was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, t-stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), and gradientweighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM). Results: In the ROC analysis, the mean area under the curve and the mean accuracy of all classifications were high with both internal and external test sets (all, > 0.89 and > 0.80). In the t-SNE analysis, our model succeeded in creating good separation between three classification groups. Grad-CAM figures showed differences in the location and size of the focus areas between three classification groups in each diagnosis. Conclusions: Since the accuracy of our model was validated with both internal and external test sets, it shows the possible usefulness of a one-step automated orthodontic diagnosis tool using a CNN model. However, it still needs technical improvement in terms of classifying vertical dental discrepancies.

Venetoclax with Azacitidine Induced Tumor Lysis Syndrome in an Elderly Patient with Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Case Report

        ( Mihee Kim ),( Hyun-jin Bang ),( Ga-Young Song ),( Seo-Yeon Ahn ),( Sung-hoon Jung ),( Yong-su Song ),( Jae-sook Ahn ) 대한전해질학회 2021 Electrolytes & Blood Pressure Vol.19 No.2

Combination treatment with hypomethylating agents (HMAs) and venetoclax is being used increasingly in elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Venetoclax with HMAs has been reported to be associated with tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) in AML patients with high leukemic burden. We present a case of an elderly AML patient with low leukemic burden who developed TLS while receiving venetoclax and azacitidine (AZA). A 74-year-old man with newly diagnosed AML with NPM1 mutation received combination therapy with venetoclax and AZA in an outpatient clinic. Within 12 hours after starting venetoclax and AZA, the patient was admitted to the emergency room with fever, general weakness, and laboratory findings consistent with TLS. Based on our results, we recommend monitoring at the start of the treatment with venetoclax and HMAs to prevent and control TLS regardless of the leukemic burden and favorable genetic risk.

Intrapleural Corticosteroid Injection in Eosinophilic Pleural Effusion Associated with Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease

Kim, Eunjung,Kim, Changhwan,Yang, Bokyung,Kim, Mihee,Kang, Jingu,Lee, Jiun The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2013 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.75 No.4

Eosinophilic pleural effusion (EPE) is defined as a pleural effusion that contains at least 10% eosinophils. EPE occurs due to a variety of causes such as blood or air in the pleural space, infection, malignancy, or an autoimmune disease. Undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD) associated with eosinophilic pleural effusion is a rare condition generally characterized by the presence of the signs and symptoms but not fulfilling the existing classification criteria. We report a case involving a 67-year-old man with UCTD and EPE, who has been successfully treated with a single intrapleural corticosteroid injection.

      • Collective Efficacy as a Mediator between Cooperative Group Norms and Group Positive Affect and Team Creativity

        Mihee, Kim(김미희),Yuhyung, Shin(신유형) 글로벌경영학회 2015 글로벌경영학회 학술대회 발표논문집 Vol.2015 No.1

In spite of a growing body of research on creativity in team contexts, very few researchers have paid attention to the team-level antecedents and mediating processes of team creativity. To fill this gap, drawing on social cognitive theory and Dzindolet’s group creativity process model, this study examined cooperative group norms and group positive affect as antecedents of team creativity and explored collective efficacy as an intermediary mechanism between these relationships. The current study was conducted with 97 work teams from 12 different South Korean organizations. As predicted, the results demonstrated that cooperative group norms and group positive affect were positively associated with team creativity, and that collective efficacy mediated these relationships. The findings offer theoretical and practical implications regarding the creativity of work teams.

Cooperative control system of the floating cranes for the dual lifting

        Mihee Nam,Jinbeom Kim,Jaechang Lee,Daekyung Kim,Donghyuk Lee,이장명 대한조선학회 2018 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.10 No.1

This paper proposes a dual lifting and its cooperative control system with two different kinds of floating cranes. The Mega-erection and Gigaerection in the ship building are used to handle heavier and wider blocks and modules as ships and off-shore platforms are enlarged. However, there is no equipment to handle such Tera-blocks. In order to overcome the limit on performance of existing floating cranes, the dual lifting is proposed in this research. In the dual lifting, two floating cranes are well-coordinated to add up the lift capabilities of both cranes without any loss such that virtually a single crane is lifting, maneuvering and unloading. Two main constraints for the dual lifting are as follows: First, two barges of floating cranes should be constrained as a rigid body not to cause a relative motion between two barges and main hooks of the two cranes should be controlled as main hooks of a single crane. In order words, it is necessary to develop the cooperative control of two floating cranes in order to sustain a center of gravity of the module and minimize the tilting angle during the lifting and unloading by the two floating cranes. Two floating cranes are handled as a master-slave system. The master crane is able to gather information about all working conditions and make a decision to control the individual hook speed, which communicates the slave crane by TCP/IP. The developed control system has been embedded in the real floating crane systems and the dual lifting has been demonstrated five times at SHI shipyard in 2015. The moving angles of the lifting module are analyzed and verified to be suitable for hoisting control. It is verified that the dual lifting can be applied for many heavier and wider blocks and modules to shorten the construction time of ships and off-shore platforms.

      • Well-Defined DNA-Mimic Brush Polymers Bearing Adenine Moieties: Synthesis, Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly, and Biocompatibility

        Kim, Jin Chul,Jung, Jungwoon,Rho, Yecheol,Kim, Mihee,Kwon, Wonsang,Kim, Heesoo,Kim, Ik Jung,Kim, Jung Ran,Ree, Moonhor American Chemical Society 2011 Biomacromolecules Vol.12 No.7

Two new DNA-mimicking brush polymers were synthesized: poly[oxy(11-(3-(9-adeninyl)propionato)-undecanyl-1-thiomethyl)ethylene] (PECH-AP) and poly[oxy(11-(5-(9-adenylethyloxy)-4-oxopentanoato)undecanyl-1-thiomethyl)ethylene] (PECH-AS). These polymers were found to be thermally stable up to 220 °C and could be applied easily by conventional coating processes to produce good quality films. Interestingly, both brush polymers formed molecular multibilayer structures to provide an adenine-rich surface. Despite the structural similarities, PECH-AS surprisingly exhibited higher hydrophilicity and better water sorption properties than PECH-AP. These differences were attributed to the chemical structures in the bristles of the polymers. The adenine-rich surfaces of the polymer films demonstrated selective protein adsorption, suppressed bacterial adherence, facilitated HEp-2 cell adhesion, and exhibited good biocompatibility in mice. However, the high hydrophilicity and good water sorption characteristics of the PECH-AS film suggest that this brush polymer is better suited to applications requiring good biocompatibility and reduced chance of bacterial infection compared with the PECH-AP film.

Graphic Abstract

Prevalence and risk factors of periodontitis among adults with or without diabetes mellitus

( Mihee Hong ),( Hee Yeon Kim ),( Hannah Seok ),( Chang Dong Yeo ),( Young Soo Kim ),( Jae Yen Song ),( Young Bok Lee ),( Dong-hee Lee ),( Jae-im Lee ),( Tae-kyu Lee ),( Hyo-suk Ahn ),( Yoon Ho Ko ),( 대한내과학회 2016 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.31 No.5

Background/Aims: This study examined prevalence and risk factors of periodontitis in representative samples of Korean adults, with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: Data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were analyzed. A total of 4,477 adults (≥ 30 years old) were selected from 8,057 individuals who completed a nutrition survey, a self-reported general health behavior questionnaire, an oral examination, an oral hygiene behaviors survey, and laboratory tests. DM was defined as a fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, or self-reported diagnosed diabetes, or current use of oral hypoglycemic agents and/or insulin. The community periodontal index was used to assess periodontitis status and comparisons between the periodontitis and the non-periodontitis group, were performed, according to the presence of DM. Risk factors for periodontitis in adults with DM and without DM were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of periodontitis was significantly higher in adults with DM (43.7%) than in those without DM (25%, p < 0.001). In adults without DM, risk factors for periodontitis were older age, male, urban habitation, waist circumference, smoking, oral pain, and less frequent tooth brushing. Significant risk factors for periodontitis in adults with DM were the smoking, oral pain, and not-using an oral hygiene product. Conclusions: Adults with DM have an increased risk of periodontitis than those without DM. Current smoking and oral pain increase this risk. Using an oral hygiene product can reduce risk of periodontal disease in adults with DM.

      • pH-Dependent Structures of Ferritin and Apoferritin in Solution: Disassembly and Reassembly

        Kim, Mihee,Rho, Yecheol,Jin, Kyeong Sik,Ahn, Byungcheol,Jung, Sungmin,Kim, Heesoo,Ree, Moonhor American Chemical Society 2011 Biomacromolecules Vol.12 No.5

The pH-dependent structures of the ferritin shell (apoferritin, 24-mer) and the ferrihydrite core, under physiological conditions that permit enzymatic activity, were investigated by synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The solution structure of apoferritin was found to be nearly identical to the crystal structure. The shell thickness and hollow core volumes were estimated. The intact hollow spherical apoferritin was stable over a wide pH range, 3.40−10.0, and the ferrihydrite core was stable over the pH range 2.10−10.0. The apoferritin subunits underwent aggregation below pH 0.80, whereas the ferrihydrite cores aggregated below pH 2.10 as a result of the disassembly of the ferritin shell under the strongly acidic conditions. As the pH decreased from 3.40 to 0.80, apoferritin underwent stepwise disassembly by first forming a hollow sphere with two holes, then a headset-shaped structure, and, finally, rodlike oligomers. As the pH was increased from pH 1.96, the disassembled rodlike oligomers recovered only to the headset-shaped structure, and the disassembled headset-shaped intermediates recovered only to the hollow spherical structure with two hole defects. The apoferritin hole defects that formed during the disassembly process did not heal as the pH was increased to neutral or slightly basic conditions. The pH-induced apoferritin disassembly and reassembly processes were not fully reversible, although they were pseudoreversible over a limited pH range, between 10.0 and 2.66.

Graphic Abstract
