A New Cross-Layer QoS-Provisioning Architecture in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks
( Kyungho Sohn ),( Young Yong Kim ),( Navrati Saxena ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2016 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.10 No.12
Emerging applications in automation, medical imaging, traffic monitoring and surveillance need real-time data transmission over Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) for real-time traffic over WSNs creates new challenges. Rapid penetration of smart devices, standardization of Machine Type Communications (MTC) in next generation 5G wireless networks have added new dimensions in these challenges. In order to satisfy such precise QoS constraints, in this paper, we propose a new cross-layer QoS-provisioning strategy in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). The network layer performs statistical estimation of sensory QoS parameters. Identifying QoS-routing problem with multiple objectives as NP-complete, it discovers near-optimal QoS-routes by using evolutionary genetic algorithms. Subsequently, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer classifies the packets, automatically adapts the contention window, based on QoS requirements and transmits the data by using routing information obtained by the network layer. Performance analysis is carried out to get an estimate of the overall system. Through the simulation results, it is manifested that the proposed strategy is able to achieve better throughput and significant lower delay, at the expense of negligible energy consumption, in comparison to existing WMSN QoS protocols.

Whole Genome Enabled Phylogenetic and Secretome Analyses of Two Venturia nashicola Isolates
Maxim Prokchorchik,Kyungho Won,Yoonyoung Lee,Cé,cile Segonzac,Kee Hoon Sohn 한국식물병리학회 2020 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.36 No.1
Venturia nashicola is a fungal pathogen causing scab disease in Asian pears. It is particularly important in the Northeast Asia region where Asian pears are intensively grown. Venturia nashicola causes disease in Asian pear but not in European pear. Due to the highly restricted host range of Venturia nashicola, it is hypothesized that the small secreted proteins deployed by the pathogen are responsible for the host determination. Here we report the whole genome based phylogenetic analysis and predicted secretomes for V. nashicola isolates. We believe that our data will provide a valuable information for further validation and functional characterization of host determinants in V. nashicola.

A crude oil and the coastal sediments that were affected by the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill (HSOS) of Taean, Korea were investigated for thyroid hormone disruption potentials. Water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of Iranian Heavy crude oil, the major oil type of HSOS, and the porewater or leachate of sediment samples collected along the coast line of Taean were tested for thyroid disruption using developing zebrafish and/or rat pituitary GH3 cells. Major polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their alkylated forms were also measured from the test samples. In zebrafish larvae, significant decreases in whole-body thyroxine (T-4) and triiodothyronine (T-3) levels, along with transcriptional changes of thyroid regulating genes, were observed following 5 day exposure to WAFs. In GH3 cells, transcriptions of thyroid regulating genes were influenced following the exposure to the sediment samples, but the pattern of the regulatory change was different from those observed from the WAFs. Composition of PAHs and their alkylated homologues in the WAFs could partly explain this difference. Our results clearly demonstrate that WAFs of crude oil can disrupt thyroid function of larval zebrafish. Sediment samples also showed thyroid disrupting potentials in the GH3 cell, even several years after the oil spill. Long-term ecosystem consequences of thyroid hormone disruption due to oil spill deserve further investigation.
