Purulent pericarditis is defined as a localized pericardial infection with gross pus formation in the pericardial space. Although purulent pericarditis is now rare in the antibiotic era, it may be life-threatening. We describe a rare case of purulent pericarditis that originated from a subdiaphragmatic suppurative focus in an immunocompromised host.

<P>The study of antiviral pathways to reveal methods for the effective response and clearance of virus is closely related to understanding interferon (IFN) signaling and its downstream target genes, IFN-stimulated genes. One of the key antiviral factors induced by IFNs, 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthase (OAS), is a well-known molecule that regulates the early phase of viral infection by degrading viral RNA in combination with RNase L, resulting in the inhibition of viral replication. In this review, we describe OAS family proteins from a different point of view from that of previous reviews. We discuss not only RNase L-dependent (canonical) and -independent (noncanonical) pathways but also the possibility of the OAS family members as biomarkers for various diseases and clues to non-immunological functions based on recent studies. In particular, we focus on OASL, a member of the OAS family that is relatively less well understood than the other members. We will explain its anti- and pro-viral dual roles as well as the diseases related to single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the corresponding gene.</P>
Acute Left Main Coronary Artery Thrombosis As Initial Presentation of Systemic Lupus E rythematosus

Acute coronary artery thrombosis in left main is rare in young age and its etiology should be determined. Acute myocardial infarction due to thrombus in left main is rare but results in disastrous outcomes. The incidence of Ischemic heart disease is 8%-16% in SLE patients and Few reports have described acute myocardial infarction as an initial presentation. We present a unique case of a 40-year-old young manpreviously healthy who has an ST-elevation myocardial infarction by total acute thrombosis of the left main coronary artery. He have many features of SLE, including Serositis, Renal involvement, Hemolytic anemia, ANA and low complement. The patient was treated successfully with percutaneous coronary intervention and Steroid therapy. This case highlights the importance of considering thrombotic states such as SLE presenting with acute myocardial infarction caused by an unexplained intracoronary thrombosis. In conclusion, SLE should be considered as differential diagnosis in relatively young patients presented with acute left main thrombosis.

<P>To realize light-responsive phase chirality from an achiral macrogelator in the solid state, a disc-shaped achiral macrogelator (B1AZ) was newly synthesized. B1AZ was self-assembled into a lamello-columnar structure in the bulk state, while single-handed helical fibrils (<I>H</I>F) with 400 nm of helical pitch were constructed by side-by-side lateral association of achiral B1AZ molecules in carvone chiral solvents. Even after the elimination of chiral solvents, the helical morphology and its chiroptical properties were precisely preserved. However, <I>H</I>F was not sensitive to UV light due to intense lateral packing. For remote-controlling the helical morphology, a single-helix (<I>H</I>S) with an 18 nm helical pitch was formed by utilizing <I>cis</I>-B1AZ sol. Upon irradiation with UV light, <I>H</I>S was transformed into spheroids (<I>S</I>) because of the <I>trans</I>-to-<I>cis</I> photo-isomerization of the azobenzene (AZ) of B1AZ. The photo-switchable phase chirality can be applied in light-responsive smart materials.</P>
Scalable video coding with large block for UHD video

<P>Ultra-high definition (UHD) which has 4 to 16 times as many pixels as existing high definition (HD) is expected as a next generation video format. To deliver UHD and HD videos simultaneously in the communications-broadcasting convergence environment, scalable video coding (SVC) is a highly attractive solution. We propose an improved scalable video coding method to achieve high coding efficiency particularly for UHD and HD videos. The basic idea is to allow large block size beyond the block size of 16×16 pixels in H.264/AVC SVC, which results in more efficient inter-layer prediction and syntax elements coding. The experimental results show that it achieves an average 5.34% reduction in BD-rate relative to H.264/AVC SVC.</P>

Terpenoids are of great interests in a broad range of health-beneficial biological activities and various industrial applications. In plants, terpenoids are synthesized by two distinct pathways, methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) and mevalonate pathways in a separate location. MEP pathway supplies isoprene precursors isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and its isomer dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) of terpenoid biosynthesis in plant plastids. The MEP pathway has been an engineering target to increase the metabolic flux towards higher terpenoid production in plants. 1-Hydroxy-2-methyl-2-( E )-butenyl-4-diphosphate reductase (HDR) is the terminal step of the MEP pathway to regulate the terpenoid biosynthesis and is encoded by three paralogous genes in Ginkgo biloba. In this study, we assessed the effect of overexpression of GbHDR1 on terpenoid metabolism in poplar plants. Overexpression of GbHDR1 in poplar plants accelerated growth and delayed winter-bud formation. Transcript levels of gibberellin, chlorophylls, and carotenoid biosynthetic genes in GbHDR1- overexpressing ( GbHDR1 ox) poplars were up-regulated, suggesting metabolic flux enhancement. Moreover, enhanced contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids in the leaves of the GbHDR1 ox plants resulted in a higher photosynthetic rate as a consequence. Therefore, we expect the GbHDR1 overexpression will be a desirable engineering point of the MEP pathway for enhancing terpenoid metabolic flux and production in plants.

Molecular imaging with the radiolabeled RGD peptides for ${\alpha}_v{\beta}_3$ integrin has been an increasing interest for tumor diagnosis and the treatment monitoring. Recently, $^{64}Cu$-NODAGA-gluco-E[c(RGDfK)]$_2$ was developed for quantification of ${\alpha}_v{\beta}_3$ integrin and its biological properties was elucidated. To better understand the molecular process in vivo, we performed the kinetic analysis for the $^{64}Cu$-NODAGA-gluco-E[c(RGDfK)]$_2$. After preparation of a radiotracer, dynamic PET images were obtained in the U87MG xenograft mice for 60 min (n = 6). Binding potential values were estimated from the 3-tissue compartment model, reference Logan and simplified reference tissue model. In the early time frame (0-20 min), the liver, kidney, intestine, urinary bladder and tumor were visualized but these uptakes were diminished as time went by. The tumors showed a good contrast at 40 min after administration. $^{64}Cu$-NODAGA-gluco-E[c(RGDfK)]$_2$ showed the 2-fold uptake in the tumor compared with that in the muscle. The parametric maps for binding values also provide the higher tumor-to-background contrast than the static images. A binding value obtained from the 3-tissue compartment model was comparable to other modeling methods. From these results, we conclude that $^{64}Cu$-NODAGA-gluco-E[c(RGDfK)]$_2$ may be a promising PET radiotracer for the evaluation of angiogenesis.
Cytotoxic Isoquinoline Alkaloids from the Aerial Parts of Corydalis incisa

Three known isoquinoline alkaloids were isolated from the chloroform-soluble fraction of the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Corydalis incisa (Papaveraceae) through repeated column chromatography. Their chemical structures were elucidated as corynoline (1), corynoloxine (2) and 6-oxocorynoline (3) using spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1-3 exhibited cytotoxicity against human A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2 and HCT 15 tumor cells.

<P>PINK1 (PTEN induced putative kinase 1), a familial Parkinson's disease (PD)-related gene, is expressed in astrocytes, but little is known about its role in this cell type. Here, we found that astrocytes cultured from PINK1-knockout (KO) mice exhibit defective proliferative responses to epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fetal bovine serum. In PINK1-KO astrocytes, basal and EGF-induced p38 activation (phosphorylation) were increased whereas EGF receptor (EGFR) expression and AKT activation were decreased. p38 inhibition (SB203580) or knockdown with small interfering RNA (siRNA) rescued EGFR expression and AKT activation in PINK1-KO astrocytes. Proliferation defects in PINK1-KO astrocytes appeared to be linked to mitochondrial defects, manifesting as decreased mitochondrial mass and membrane potential, increased intracellular reactive oxygen species level, decreased glucose-uptake capacity, and decreased ATP production. Mitochondrial toxin (oligomycin) and a glucose-uptake inhibitor (phloretin) mimicked the PINK1-deficiency phenotype, decreasing astrocyte proliferation, EGFR expression and AKT activation, and increasing p38 activation. In addition, the proliferation defect in PINK1-KO astrocytes resulted in a delay in the wound healing process. Taken together, these results suggest that PINK1 deficiency causes astrocytes dysfunction, which may contribute to the development of PD due to delayed astrocytes-mediated repair of microenvironment in the brain.</P>
