Thickness-dependent electronic structure in ultrathinLaNiO3films under tensile strain

<P>We investigated electronic-structure changes of tensile-strained ultrathin LaNiO3 (LNO) films from ten to one unit cells (UCs) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We found that there is a critical thickness t(c) between four and three UCs below which Ni e(g) electrons are confined in two-dimensional space. Furthermore, the Fermi surfaces (FSs) of LNO films below t(c) consist of two orthogonal pairs of one-dimensional (1D) straight parallel lines. Such a feature is not accidental as observed in constant-energy surfaces at all binding energies, which is not explained by first-principles calculations or the dynamical mean-field theory. The ARPES spectra also show anomalous spectral behaviors, such as no quasiparticle peak at the Fermi momentum but fast band dispersion comparable to the bare-band one, which is typical in a 1D system. As its possible origin, we propose 1D FS nesting, which also accounts for FS superstructures observed in ARPES.</P>

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutrient composition, in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) and organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) of three kinds of distillers grains (DG); i) wet distillers grains (WDG, KRW 25/kg), ii) dried distillers grains (DDG, KRW 280/kg), iii) dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS, KRW 270/kg) produced from tapioca 70% and rice 30%, and to evaluate dietary effects of WDG on the performance of Hanwoo steers. In Exp. 1, twelve-WDG, four-DDG and one-DDGS were collected from seven ethanol plants. Average crude protein, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber of WDG, DDG, and DDGS were: 32.6%, 17.8%, 57.5%, and 30.2% for WDG, 36.7%, 13.9%, 51.4%, and 30.5% for DDG, and 31.0%, 11.9%, 40.3%, and 21.2% for DDGS (DM basis), respectively. The DDGS had a higher quantity of water-soluble fraction than WDG and DDG and showed the highest IVDMD (p<0.05) in comparison to others during the whole experimental time. The IVDMD at 0 to 12 h incubation were higher (p<0.05) in DDG than WDG, but did not show significant differences from 24 to 72 h. The same tendency was observed in IVOMD, showing that DG made from tapioca and rice (7:3) can be used as a feed ingredient for ruminants. Considering the price, WDG is a more useful feed ingredient than DDG and DDGS. In Exp. 2, 36 Hanwoo steers of 21 months ($495.1{\pm}91kg$) were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments for 85 days; i) Control (total mixed ration, TMR), ii) WDG 10% (TMR containing 10% of WDG, as fed basis), and iii) WDG 20% (TMR containing 20% of WDG, as fed basis). With respect to body weight and average daily gain, there were no differences between control and WDG treatments during the whole experimental period. Dry matter intake of control (9.34 kg), WDG 10% (9.21 kg) and 20% (8.86 kg) and feed conversion ratio of control (13.0), WDG 10% (13.2) and 20% (12.1) did not show differences between control and WDG treatments. Thus, the use of WDG up to 20% in TMR did not show any negative effect on the performance of Hanwoo steers.

<P>To date, most of the proteomic analyses on lung cancer tissue samples have been performed using surgical specimens, which are obtained after a diagnosis is made. To determine if a proteomic signature obtained from bronchoscopic biopsy samples could be found to assist with diagnosis, 50 lung cancer bronchoscopic biopsy samples and 13 adjacent normal lung tissue samples were analyzed using histology‐directed, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS). Lung tissue samples were cryosectioned, and sinapinic acid was robotically deposited on areas of each tissue section enriched in epithelial cells, either tumor or normal. Mass spectra were acquired using a MALDI‐time of flight instrument. Small cell lung cancers (SCLCs) demonstrated clearly different protein profiles from normal lung tissue and from non‐small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). Calcyclin (<I>m/z</I>= 10 094.7) was identified to be underexpressed in small cell lung cancers, as compared with non‐small cell lung cancers and normal lung tissue. An immunohistochemistry study using 152 NSCLCs and 21 SCLCs confirmed significantly reduced calcyclin stain in SCLCs. Thus, protein profiles obtained from bronchoscopic biopsy samples via MALDI MS distinguish cancerous epithelium from normal lung tissue and between NSCLCs and SCLCs.</P>

N/A Background/Aims: Abnormalities of bone metabolism occur to gastrectomised patients in the form of a late complication. Nowadays, many biochemical and radiologic measurements are applied to detect these abnormalities. The aim of this study was to determine the parameter for an appropriate screening test during the long-term follow-up period and define the usefulness of new biochemical markers for bone metabo]ism by comparing them with traditional markers. Methods: Among the patients gastrectomised(Billroth II) in the surgica] department of Hanyang University Hospital since 1982, 10 patients were randomly selected with exclusion criteria by measuring several biochemical and radiologic tests. Ten age-matched volunteers who led a healthy normal life were selected with the consent of subjects. Results: Comparing the data with those of a corresponding control group, the ]umbar bone density tneasured by quantitative cornputed tornography(QCT) was statistically significantly lower in the patient group(p0.01). In addition, urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD), a biochemical marker for bone resorption, was statistica]ly higher in the patient group(p -0.025). Osteocalcin, P1CP, and 1CTP were slightly but not significant]y bigher in the patient group. The serum PTH and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were sitnilar in both groups. Conclusiions: Although the nurnber of cases was smal] for data evaluation, we suggest that urinary deoxypyridinoline and QCT were appropriate parameters for tbe screening test for the detection of bone metabolism abnormalities in gastrectomised patients during the long-term follow-up. Furthermore, urinary deoxypyridinoline is a simple and rapid test which can replace cumbersome 24-hour urinary hydroxypro]ine. (Korean J Gastroenterol 1996; 28:172 178)
Development of Ceramic Humidity Sensor for the Korean Next Generation Reactor

Leak-before-break(LBB) approach has been shown to be both cost effective and risk reductive when applied to high energy Piping in nuclear Power Plants. For the Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR) development, LBB application is considered for the Main Steam Line(MSL) piping inside containment. Unlike the primary system leakages, the MSL leak detection systems must be based on principles other than radioactivity measurements. Among humidity, heat and acoustic noise currently being considered as indicators of leakage, we explored humidity as an effective one and developed ceramic-based humidity sensor which can be qualified for LBB applications. The ceramic material, sintered and annealed MgCr$_2$O$_4$-TiO$_2$, is shown to increase its electrical conductivity drastically upon water vapor adsorption over the entire temperature range of interest. With this ceramic sensor specimen, we suggested installation-inside-the-piping method by which we can detect leakage more rapidly and sensitively. In this paper, we describe the progress in the development and characterization of ceramic humidity sensor for the LBB application to the MSL of KNGR.
