Factors influencing choosing teaching as a career: South Korean preservice teachers
Jeong‑Ae Lee,Mi Ok Kang,Bitnara Jasmine Park 서울대학교 교육연구소 2019 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.20 No.3
This study validated the underlying factor structure of the Factors Influencing Teaching (FIT)-Choice survey in the South Korea context and examined motivations and perceptions of 903 Korean preservice teachers by major demographic characteristics. Secondary preservice teachers reported significantly higher values than elementary preservice teachers for Qualification fit and desire to teach and Task return. Male preservice teachers believed more strongly than female preservice teachers that they chose the teaching profession because of Qualification fit, Influencing others, and Task return. Compared to freshmen/sophomores, juniors/seniors reported significantly higher values for Task demand. Participants with low- to medium-level self-reported income ($12K–$46K) weighted Benefits significantly higher than those with medium-level income ($46K–$88K). STEM majors reported higher values for the Qualification fit and Influencing others than non-STEM majors. As South Korea is one of the few countries which has an oversupply of highly qualified teacher candidates, findings were compared with other countries to provide useful insights to improve recruitment of highly qualified individuals to teaching workforce in many countries where teacher shortage is a chronic problem. Based on these data analyses, we argue that policy makers, politicians, education researchers, and others who care about quality education and student academic achievements need to make efforts to increase task returns and benefits.

Ho-Chang Lee1, Seung-Myoung Son, Yong-Moon Lee, Ji Hae Koo, Song-Yi Choi, Ok-Jun Lee, Eun-Hwan Jeong 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2012 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.13 No.2
Malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is rare. Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a neoplasm comprising malignant mesenchymal cells and a conventional carcinomatous area. Here, we report on a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma arising from an MCT in the left ovary of a 45-year-old female. A unilocular cyst consistent with MCT was observed; however, a nodule within the cyst was confirmed from the resected ovary. Microscopically, the nodule showed both squamous cell carcinoma and pleomorphic sarcomatous components admixing with each other. Lining epithelial cells at the periphery of the main tumor showed squamous metaplasia. When a sarcomatous component is observed in the ovary tumor, it is important to find a squamous cell component, either benign or malignant.

<P>Compound K (CK; 20-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranosyl-20(<I>S</I>)-protopanaxadiol), an active ginseng saponin metabolite, exerts anticancer activity <I>via</I> apoptosis induction in various cancers. In the present study, we investigated the anti-angiogenic activity of CK and its molecular mechanisms in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Angiogenesis was induced in HUVECS by basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), a potent angiogenic growth factor. CK significantly inhibited the proliferation and also attenuated the expression of a proliferating protein cyclin D1 in bFGF treated HUVECs. Also, CK significantly inhibited the migration and tube formation of bFGF treated HUVECs at non-cytotoxic concentrations, reduced secreted level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and increased the secreted level of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) in HUVECs. In addition, CK effectively disrupted bFGF-induced neo-vascularization in the Matrigel plugs excised from mice <I>in vivo</I>. Notably, we have found that CK downregulated the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and AKT in bFGF treated HUVECs. Taken together, our findings for the first time indicate that CK exerts anti-angiogenic activity <I>via</I> inhibition of p38 MAPK and AKT in HUVECs with the potential of a cancer chemopreventive agent.</P>

Bounds for Network Reliability
Jeong, Mi-Ok,Lim, Kyung-Eun,Lee, Eui-Yong 한국데이터정보과학회 2005 한국데이터정보과학회지 Vol.16 No.1
A network consisting of a set of N nodes and a set of links is considered. The nodes are assumed to be perfect and the states of links to be binary and associated to each other. After defining a network structure function, which represents the state of network as a function of the states of links, we obtain some lower and upper bounds on the network reliability by adopting minmax principle and minimal path and cut set arguments. These bounds are given as functions of the reliabilities of links. The bridge network is considered as an example.
Development of an ISSR-Derived SCAR Marker in Korean Ginseng Cultivars (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer)
Lee, Jei-Wan,Kim, Young-Chang,Jo, Ick-Hyun,Seo, A-Yeon,Lee, Jeong-Hoon,Kim, Ok-Tae,Hyun, Dong-Yun,Cha, Seon-Woo,Bang, Kyong-Hwan,Cho, Joon-Hyeong The Korean Society of Ginseng 2011 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.35 No.1
Recently, new ginseng cultivars having superior agricultural traits have been developed in Korea. For newly developed plant cultivars, the identification of distinctiveness is very important factors not only in plant cultivar management but also in breeding programs. Thus, eighty-five inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers were applied to detect polymorphisms among six major Korean ginseng cultivars and two foreign ginsengs. A total of 197 polymorphic bands with an average 5.8 polymorphic bands and 2.9 banding patterns per assay unit across six Korean ginseng cultivars and foreign ginsengs from 236 amplified ISSR loci with an average 6.9 loci per assay unit were generated by 34 out of 85 ISSR primers. Three species of Panax ginseng including the Korean ginseng cultivars, P. quinquefolius, and P. notoginseng, could be readily discriminated using most tested primers. UBC-821, UBC-868, and UBC-878 generated polymorphic bands among the six Korean ginseng cultivars, and could distinguish them from foreign ginsengs. Sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker system was introduced in order to increase the reproducibility of the polymorphism. One SCAR marker, PgI821C650, was successfully converted from the randomly amplified polymorphism by UBC-821. It showed the expected dominant polymorphism among ginseng samples. In addition, the specific polymorphism for Sunwon was generated by treating Taq I restriction enzyme to polymerase chain reaction products of PgI821C650. These results will serve as useful DNA markers for identification of Korean ginseng, especially Sunwon cultivar, seed management, and molecular breeding program supplemented with marker-assisted selection.

<P>The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of lipid emulsion on a toxic dose of local anesthetic-mediated reduction of vasodilation evoked by the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel agonist levcromakalim. The effect of lipid emulsion (LE) and linoleic acid on the local anesthetic-mediated reduction of vasodilation and membrane hyperpolarization evoked by levcromakalim was assessed in isolated endothelium-denuded vessels (rat aorta and mesenteric artery) and aortic vascular smooth muscle cells. The effect of LE and linoleic acid on KATP channel activity in transfected HEK-293 cells was investigated, as was the effect of LE on bupivacaine concentration. The efficacy of LE in attenuating the local anesthetic-mediated reduction of vasodilation evoked by levcromakalim was correlated with the lipid solubility of the local anesthetic. Linoleic acid attenuated the bupivacaine-mediated reduction of vasodilation evoked by levcromakalim. LE decreased the bupivacaine-mediated reduction of membrane hyperpolarization evoked by levcromakalim but did not significantly alter the mepivacaine-mediated reduction. LE and linoleic acid both reversed the bupivacaine-mediated decrease of KATP activity and enhanced KATP activity. LE decreased the bupivacaine concentration. Linoleic acid may be the major contributor to LE-induced attenuation of bupivacaine-mediated reduction of vasodilation evoked by levcromakalim via the direct activation of KATP channels and indirect effects.</P>

<P>Methicillin-resistant <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> (MRSA) is a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality. In search of a natural products capable of inhibiting this multidrug resistant bacteria, we have investigated the antimicrobial activity of emodin (EM) isolated from <I>Rheum palmatum</I> L. (Polygonaceae) against 17 different strains of the bacterium. New antimicrobial activity was found using the paper disc diffusion method, agar dilution as well as checkerboard method. Against the 17 strains, the disc diffusion test was in the range of 18-30 mm, and the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of EM were in the range of 1.5-25 μg/mL. From those results we performed the checkerboard test to determine the synergism of EM in combination with ampicillin (AM) or oxacillin (OX) against all strains. The combined activity of EM and two antimicrobial agents (AM, OX) against all strains resulted in a fractional inhibitory concentrations index (FICI) ranging from 0.37-0.5 and from 0.37-0.75, respectively. The effect of EM with AM and OX was found to be synergistic or partially synergistic. We found that EM reduced the MICs of AM and OX. EM and in combination with AM or OX could lead to the development of new combination antibiotics against MRSA infection.</P>

Expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis was conducted using a cDNA library made from the liver mRNA of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). In the survey of 421 ESTs, 362 showed significant homology to previously described genes while 59 were unidentified or novel. Comparative analysis of the identified ESTs showed that 69 $(19.0\%)$ clones were identified as homologous to the previously reported olive flounder ESTs, and 279 $(77.1\%)$ clones were identified as orthologs of known genes from other organisms. The remaining 14 $(3.9\%)$ clones were identified as orthologs of known sequences with unknown functions. These tagged cDNA clones, identified and unidentified, could provide fundamental baseline data for genomic studies of this species.
