        Methyleugenol reduces cerebral ischemic injury by suppression of oxidative injury and inflammation

        <P>The present study tested the cytoprotective effect of methyleugenol in an <I>in vivo</I> ischemia model (i.e. middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 1.5 h and subsequent reperfusion for 24 h) and further investigated its mechanism of action in <I>in vitro</I> cerebral ischemic models. When applied shortly after reperfusion, methyleugenol largely reduced cerebral ischemic injury. Methyleugenol decreased the caspase-3 activation and death of cultured cerebral cortical neurons caused by oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) for 1 h and subsequent re-oxygenation for 24 h. Methyleugenol markedly reduced superoxide generation in the ischemic brain and decreased the intracellular oxidative stress caused by OGD/re-oxygenation. It was found that methyleugenol elevated the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Further, methyleugenol inhibited the production of nitric oxide and decreased the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase. Methyleugenol down-regulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the ischemic brain as well as in immunostimulated mixed glial cells. The results indicate that methyleugenol could be useful for the treatment of ischemia/inflammation-related diseases.</P>

      • Ferromagnetism in ZnCoO due to Hydrogen-Mediated Co–H–Co Complexes: How to Avoid the Formation of Co Metal Clusters?

        <P>There have been many studies of ferromagnetism in ZnCoO, and the results have been controversial. Secondary phases, such as Co oxides and Co metal clusters, in ZnCoO are easily produced during treatment, but the formation conditions are not well understood. We fabricated samples under hydrogen-injection conditions at different heat-treatment temperatures and examined the conditions by using synchrotron X-ray analysis under which Co<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> appeared or was transformed into Co metal. We investigated the transforming process of the ferromagnetic origin from intrinsic to extrinsic nature via intermediate region competition by Co–H–Co and Co metal cluster and suggest conditions that induce ferromagnetic spin ordering in ZnCoO due to Co–H–Co complexes through hydrogen mediation.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2012/jpccck.2012.116.issue-22/jp300536w/production/images/medium/jp-2012-00536w_0010.gif'></P>

      • Electron Cyclotron Resonance O_2 Plasma에서 증착한 규소 산화 박막의 특성

        규소 산화막을 ECR-CVD(electron cyclotron resonance-chemical vapor deposition) 증착방법으로 5인치 기판위에 상온에서 증착하고, 증착공정조건인 증착율, 기판온도, 마이크로파의 세기변화 및 플라즈마 혼합기체의 비에 따른 규소 산화막의 특성을 조사하였다. 또한 산화막의 구조적인 특성을 비교하기 위해 FTIR을 이용하여 ECR-CVD 증착한 산화막, RPE-CVD(remote plasma enhanced-CVD) 증착한 산화막 및 열 산화막의 stretching frequency를 측정하였다. 측정된 결과 ECR-CVD로 증착된 산화막이 구조적인 면에서 열 산화막과 거의 같음을 보였다. ECR-CVD로 증착된 산화막의 전기적인 특성을 전류-전압 및 축전-전압 측정에의하여 분석하였다. 축전된 산화막의 전기적인 특성은 산화막의 전하 밀도는 1×10 exp (11)/㎠이였고, 평균 절연 파괴 전압은 약 6 MV/㎝이다. We have grown thin films of SiO_2 at room temperature by using an ECR-CVD system and have investigated the changes in the properties of the deposited films with changes in the processing conditions such as the deposition rate, the substrate temperature, the microwave power and the plasma gas mixing ratio. We also measured the stretching frequency of three kinds of oxides, and ECR-CVD-grown oxide, a PECVD-grown oxide, and a thermally grown oxide, using FTIR analysis to compare their structural properties. The result shows that the structural properties of the ECR-grown oxide are similar to those of the thermally grown oxide. Additionally, the electrical properties of the ECR-grown oxide were investigated by using current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements. These electrical results indicate that the oxide charge density and the average breakdown voltage are 1×10 exp (11) ㎝^-2 and 6 MV/㎝, respectively.

        Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare systemic vasculitis characterized by presence of asthma and eosinophilia. Survival was rare in pre--steroid era. After introduction of steroid, there have been much improvement in overall survival rate and median survival. The vascultic illness usually requires high dose steroid teratment for several weeks and responds well to corticosteroids. But mononeuritis multiplex responds to steroids more gradually and sometimes requires cytotoxic drugs such as azathioprine, hydroxyurea or cyclophophamide We report a 40 year-old asthmatic female with purpuric skin lesions, pain and paresthesia of both hands and feet, left foot drop and eosinophila. Skin and nerve biopsy demonstrated necrotizing vascultis with perivascular infiltration of eosinophils. Nerve conduction studies showed changes compatible with mononeuritis multiplex. Purpuric skin lesion disappeared and both eosinophilia and sedimentation rate decreased into normal range within a week after steroid treatment whereas neurologic symptoms

        We have performed an EMTDC simulation for the current limiting effects of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). A three-phase fault in the 154 kV transmission line between the gaepo and Sungnam substations produced a fault current of up to 60kA. The SFCL with 100 Ω impedance after quench limited the current to 17kA within a half cycle. This limited current is well below the upper limit of a circuit breaker, suggesting the impedance of the SFCL in the transmission line is sufficient.

        상용화제 SEBS-g-MA가 PA6/PP-g-MA 블렌드계의 나노 고차구조에 미치는 영향

        Polyamide 6 (PA6)/maleated polypropylene (PP-g-MA) 블렌드계의 상용화제로 maleic anhydride (MA)가 그래프트(graft)된 poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS-g-MA)를 첨가하여 블렌드의 고차구조에 미치는 영향을 small angle x-ray scattering, DSC 및 SEM을 이용하여 고찰하였다. SEBS-g-MA가 첨가된 시료는 첨가되지 않은 시료보다 PA6분상의 크기가 작았는데 이는 가공 또는 열처리 중 SEBS-g-MA의 무수말레산과 PA6의 아민 그룹(amine group) 사이에 반응이 일어나 PA6/PP-g-MA 계면에 PA6-SEBS-g-MA 그래프트 공중합체가 형성되어 이 공중합체가 상용화제로서 작용하여 계면장력을 안정화시켜 PA6 분산상 크기를 작게 한 것으로 추정되었다. 첨가된 SEBS-g-MA의 일부는 마이크로 상분리(Micro-phase separation)되어 미세 분산상으로 존재하게 되는데 그 크기는 첨가된 양이 많을수록, 저온보다 고온일수록 크다는 것이 관찰되었다. 미세 분산상 SEBS-g-MA는 PP-g-MA 연송상의 결정화도를 낮추는 반면, PA6 분산상의 결정화도는 증가시켰다. Effect of maleic anhydride grafted triblock copolymer of poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS-g-MA) on the morphology of the blends of polyamide 6 (PA6) and maleated polypropylene (PP-g-MA) was investigated by small angle x-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimeter and scanning electron microscopy. The size of the dispered PA6 decreased with addition of SEBS-g-MA. SEBS-g-MA reacted with the amine group of PA6 during the melt-compounding, and as a result, the copolymer, formed by interfacial reaction between PA6 and SEBS-g-MA, led to reduction in size of the dispersed PA6. SEBS-g-MA was partially microphase-separated to dispersion phase, and its size increased proportional to the amount of added SEBS-g-MA and increased temperature. The microphase-separated dispersion phase highly affected the crystallinity of the PP-g-MA matrix and PA6 dispersion.

      • Eicosanoid 유도체가 흰쥐 혈압 변화에 미치는 영향

        Arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4, w-6) and eicosapentanoic acid (EPA,C20:5, w-3), which are polyunsaturated fatty acids forming eicosanoids, were tested for their effects on blood pressure in Wistar rats and SHR. AA is the most important precursor for the biosynthesis of eicosanoids which include the prostaglandins, prostacyclin (PGI_2), thromboxane A_2 (TXA_2) and the leukotriens. TXA_2 is a potent vasoconstrictor and a powerful inducer of platelet aggregation causing myocardial infarction and hypertention. In contrast, PGI_2 induces vasodilation and inhibits platelet aggregation. In this study, AA markedly increased blood pressure, but its effect was antagonized by both EPA a structural analog of AA, and dazmegrel, a TX synthetase inhibitor. Also, AA enhanced the antihypertensive effects of hydralazine and captopril, and EPA reduced TXA_2 production. These results indicate that the hypotensive effects of EPA might be closely related to the decrease in TXA_2 biosynthesis due to competitive inhibition by structural similarity of the EPA to the AA, the precursor of TXA_2.

      • 증기발생기 세관 와전류 탐상 신호해석을 위한 주성분 분석

        증기발생기(SG) 세관은 그 가동 특성상 결함이 발생할 가능성이 매우 높으며 이들의 건전성 확보는 원자력 발전소의 안전을 위해서는 필수적이다. 이들의 가동중검사에는 ECT가 널리 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 bobbin coil probe를 사용한 원전 SG 세관 ECT신호를 해석하기 위해서 신경회로망을 이용하였다. ECT의 특징을 추출하였고, 이들 중에서 단일특징 분류성능을 분석하여 유용한 특징을 선택하였으며, 또한 주성분분석을 이용하여 유용한 특징들을 정의하였다. 이와 같이 정의된 특징들로 정의된 신경회로망을 학습시키고, 학습된 신경회로망으로 미지의 결함신호에 대해서 결함의 분류와 크기 산정을 수행하였다. 수치해석으로 만들어진 모사 ECT신호에 대해서 적용한 결과, 주성분분석으로 정의된 특징들을 사용하는 경우에 보다 적은 수의 특징을 사용함에도 불구하고 신호해석의 성능이 향상되었다. 따라서, 주성분 분석은 ECT신호와 같은 다변량 데이터를 처리하는데 매우 유용함을 알 수 있었다.

        In order to suggest the proper optimal conditions of the CNC milling machining for the Thin-wall surface, some experiments were carried out. The process was applied in the aerospace industry for the machining of light alloys, notably aluminium. In recent year, however, the mold and die industry has begun to use the technology for the production of components, including those manufactured from hardened tool steels. And the end mill is an important tool in the milling process. A typical example for the end mill is the milling of pocket and slot in which a lot of material is removed from the work piece. Therefore the proper selection of cutting parameter for end milling is one of the important factors affecting the cutting cost.       • S. pneumoniae 호흡기감염 마우스에서 Ciprofloxacin의 항균력에 대한 조직학적 연구

        Sterptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 6303을 이용한 국소 호흡기 감염 마우스 모델에서 Ciprofloxacin (CPFX)의 in vivo 항균력을 조직학적으로 평가하기 위하여 생균수와 폐의 조직·병리학적 변화를 관찰하였던 결과, 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 생균수는 CPFX 투여군에서 Control 군에 비해 유의성 있게 감소되었으며, 2) Control 군에서는 현저한 폐내 염증세포의 침윤, 출혈 및 폐포 벽의 비후가 조직학적으로 관찰되었으나, 이러한 조직학적 소견들은 CPFX 투여군에서 Control 군에 비해 현저히 있게 감소되었고, 3) LSA (luminal surface of alveoli %)는 Control 군에서 Sham 군에 비해 현저히 감소된 반면, CPFX 투여군에서 Control 군에 비해 유의성 있게 증가되었다. 이상에서 본 실험의 결과, CPFX의 Sterptococcus pneumoniae에 대한 항균력이 조직학적으로 관찰되었다. In order to evaluate the in vivo effect of ciprofloxacin (CPFX), the viable bacterial number and histopathological changes were monitored after experimental respiratory infection with Sterptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 6303. In CPFX, the viable bacterial numbers were significantly and dose-dependently decreased compared to that of Control group. In Control group, severe infiltration of inflammatory cells, hemorrhage and hypertrophy of alveolar linings were demonstrated at microscopical levels. However, these abnormal histopathological changes were significantly and dose-dependently decreased compared to that of Control group in CPFX group. And also in CPFX group, the LSA (luminal surface of alveoli %) were significantly and dose-dependently increased compared to that of Control group. According to these results, it is considered as the in vivo antibacterial activity of CPFX was histologically showed against Sterptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 6303 infection of respiratory tract in this study.
