Objective: This study aims to identify the differences of preferred gestures for devices in kitchen and bathroom according to gender and age. Background: Recently, various studies related to gesture interfaces have focused on designing intuitive gesture commands to enhance the usability of the interfaces, and they have tried to derive gestures from users. However, there are few studies to identify the differences of preferred gestures according to age or gender. Method: 32 participants were recruited with consideration of various ages and gender. In the experiment, participants evaluated their preference for each gesture candidate using a 100-point scale after watching each video showing gesture candidates. Two criteria were used to select preferred gestures for each command: average point of preference (above 50) and the frequency selected as the most preferred gesture among gesture candidates (above median). Results: As a result, although several gestures were equally preferred among the different age groups and gender groups, different characteristics for preferred gestures were identified according to the groups. Conclusion: To enhance the usability of gesture interface, the preference properties for gesture commands according to age or gender should be considered from the beginning stage of designing gestures. Application: The results of this study can be used as a guideline to design user preferred gesture and can contribute to alleviate ‘Digital divide’ phenomenon.
Characteristics of preferred gestures for home appliances and devices

This study aims to identify the characteristics of preferred gestures for using electronic devices by age. Gestures are affected by the personal mental concept, which varies with age. This is, gesture preference could be different depending on age. Few studies have been conducted to identify the similarities and differences of preferred gestures by age. In an experiment, a total of 32 participants were recruited with various age bands. The participants evaluated their preference level for each gesture candidate using a 100-point scale after watching a video showing gesture candidates. If the average preference score for the gesture was evaluated higher than 50, the gesture was defined as the preferred one. This study performed statistical analyses to further investigate differences and similarities of the preferred gestures for each command. In addition, the top two gestures with the highest score among the preferred gestures were analyzed. The characteristics of the preferred gestures were also suggested by age.
Developing UX Elements for Disabled People based on Literature Survey

The purpose of this study is to identify the elements of user experience (UX) of disabled people. We focused on the UX of mobile products. Many researches about the user experience have been conducted to provide the users with a wealth of experience, but those researches have been conducted only with general users (i.e., non-disabled people). In comparison with non-disabled people, disabled people have different abilities to sense or to act, so their experience with products or services also can be different. To make a product or service for disabled people with the consideration of their experience, understanding the UX of disabled people should be required. In this study, to understand the UX of disabled people, we identified UX elements of disabled people. We analyzed previous studies on usability for disabled people and UX elements for general users. A total of 3 elements, 20 subelements, and 75 subconcepts were derived for the UX element of disabled people. This study can serve as useful criteria for development or evaluation of product or service for disabled people.
Research on the gesture design tendency of UI experts and users

Objective: In this study, to find the design tendency of gesture commands of the two groups, User Interface (UI) experts and users, we compared the results of their evaluations to gesture candidates which can be applied to domestic appliances. Background: The candidates for gesture commands of appliances can be various. To apply the gestures for appliances, the best gestures should be chosen properly by considering opinions from not only experts but also users. Method: 5 UI experts and 32 users with various range of age participated in the experiment. After watching videos showing gesture candidates, they evaluated each gesture of commands for domestic appliances such as air-conditioner, audio and door. For each gesture, the UI experts rated the overall good to match of each gesture and the users rated the preference of each gesture by the 100-point scale. Results: As a result, we derived preferred gestures with above 50 point for each command. Then we analyzed the commonly preferred gestures from two groups and only preferred gestures from users. Conclusion: As a basis for the designing suitable gestures for domestic appliances, we analyzed opinions from both the groups. This study suggests which opinions should be considered, according to kind of the groups and how they can be utilized. Application: The results of this study can be applied to designing gesture interfaces of several appliances in a smart-home.

Recent studies in gesture interfaces have focused on enhancing the naturalness of gesture vocabularies by utilizing users’ experiences related to a command. However, the previous studies lack methods for organizing the user-defined gestures in a systematic manner. It is difficult to identify the important characteristics of the user-defined gestures for commands. The users’ intentions of deriving a specific gesture for a command could be misinterpreted by the researchers. We propose a three-dimensional hand gesture taxonomy to resolve these issues. Further, we organized the user-preferred gestures that were acquired via two experiments. By subdividing the elements of each gesture, we were able to develop a new method for analyzing the important characteristics of gestures. This study proposes a novel and systematic approach to quantifying user-preferred gestures.
Developing Gesture Vocabularies for a Smart Home

The purpose of this study is to identify user-preferred gestures for functions that could be used across home appliances. Studies on designing gesture vocabularies have tried to derive gestures from users to enhance the intuitiveness and learnability. Few studies have identified user-preferred gestures across devices, which reduce the users`memory load. In this study, eleven devices were selected to evaluate user-preferred gestures. Sixty-four participants divided into two groups were employed in the experiment. They evaluated their preference levels for the gesture candidates using a 100-point scale. The gestures with higher than 50 points on the scale were selected as the user-preferred gestures for each device. The gestures commonly preferred for the most devices were selected as the integrated gesture vocabularies for each function. As a result, nine gestures commonly preferred for each function across the devices were selected. This study provides insight into designing gesture vocabularies for target functions, especially for a smart home environment
