Human skin is continuously exposed to ultraviolet (UV)-induced photoaging. UVA increases the activity of MMP-1 in dermal fibroblasts through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), p38, signaling. The irradiation of keratinocytes by UVA results in the secretion of the inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and the stimulation of MMP-1 in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs). Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is a component of the cell wall of gram-positive Lactobacillus spp. of bacteria. LTA is well known as an anti-inflammation molecule. LTA of the bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum has an anti-photoaging effect, but the potential anti-photoaging effect of the other bacteria has not been examined to date. The current study showed that L. sakei LTA (sLTA) has an immune modulating effect in human monocyte cells. Our object was whether inhibitory effects of sLTA on MMP-1 are caused from reducing the MAPK signal in NHDFs. It inhibits MMP-1 and MAPK signaling induced by UVA in NHDFs. We also confirmed effects of sLTA suppressing TNF-α inducing MMP-1 in NHDFs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify symptom experience, social support, quality of life (QOL), and the influencing factors on QOL of patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 118 patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy who visited an outpatient clinic in the Gyeonggi province. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G), MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used to assess predictors and QOL. The data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The mean score of QOL was (69.32±14.34). The type of hematologic malignancies and patient’s occupation were significantly associated with QOL in terms of demographic and disease/treatment-related characteristics. Symptom severity and symptom influence, and the support of family, friends, and medical staff had a significant association with QOL. The regression analyses showed that symptom severity (β=-.41, p<.001), friend support (β=.27, p=.001), and occupation (β=.14, p=.034) were significantly associated with QOL. Conclusion: The variables of symptom experience and social support must be acknowledged when improving QOL of hematologic malignancy patients undergoing chemotherapy. Greater focus on the reduction of symptom severity and increasing friend support could improve QOL among hematologic malignancy patients.

<P> The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) closely interacts with photoreceptors in the maintenance of visual function. The native RPEs exist as a monolayer structure and have a mottled brown color due to the presence of melanin and other pigments including lipofuscin granules, which accumulate with age. In age-related macular degeneration (AMD), RPE's dysfunction and changes in Bruch's membrane occur. Thus, small intestine submucosa/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (SIS/PLGA) film is a biomimetic transplant consisting of a layer of healthy RPE cells cultured on a support membrane. The goals of this study were to evaluate the effects of attachment and proliferation of RPEs on SIS/PLGA films. Porcine SIS is an acellular tissue and widely used as a biomaterial without immunorejection responses, whereas PLGA is a biodegradable synthetic polymer with acceptable mechanical strength and well-controlled degradation rate. We fabricated SIS/PLGA films using 20 wt% of SIS. We measured MTT to confirm cellular adhesion of cell number attached on film at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. Morphology of cellular adhesion on films was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy at 1, 3, and 7 days. Further, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was conducted to confirm messenger RNA expression of RPE65 as RPE's marker and expression of cytokeratin, and RPE65 were determined by AEC immunocytochemical staining. These results suggest that SIS provides suitable surface to RPEs. </P>

<P>A new metal ion sensor that contains quinoline and pyridylaminophenol has been synthesized. In acetonitrile and in the presence of Zn2+, the sensor fluoresces. In contrast, in aqueous solutions the sensor fluoresces in the presence of Cd2+. The fluorescence of the molecule is selective for Zn2+ or Cd2+ and shows no fluorescence with other metal ions. The crystal structure of the Cd2+ complex shows coordination through the amide and phenol oxygens, as well as the amine nitrogen of the sensor. The sensor also acts as a colorimetric sensor for Co2+ by changing color from colorless to yellow. The color change is selective for Co2+ and is not observed with other metal ions. The unique combination of pyridine and phenol groups with quinoline results in the properties of this sensor.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A new metal ion sensor based on quinoline fluoresces in organic solvents with Zn2+, fluoresces in aqueous solutions with Cd2+ and changes color in organic solvents with Co2+. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c3dt51635k'> </P>

Biomaterials for retinal tissue engineering must demonstrate several critical features for potential utility, including mechanical integrity, biocompatibility, and slow biodegradation. Silk film biomaterials were designed and characterized to meet these functional requirements. We prepared natural/synthetic hybrid silk/PLGA films using 0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 wt% of silk by a solvent evaporation method. MTT assay was used to confirm the number of cells attached on film at 1, 2, and 3 days, respectively. The morphology of cellular adhesion on films was also confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). RT-PCR was conducted to confirm mRNA expression of retinal pigment epithelium(RPE) using RPE65 as a RPEs marker and the expression of cytokeratin were determined by immunofluorescence staining. We confirmed that the silk/PLGA film of 20∼40 wt% silk was superior for the adhesion and proliferation of RPEs.
