The future society is expected to be rapidly change in all areas, that is, the length of change time is becoming much smaller than that of generation time. It is very important to prepare the citizens who possess scientific literacy which actively cope with the rapid changes and specialization of society. The sources of rapid changes may be due to the developments in science and technology. Therefore, the importance of science education will be increasingly high. Scientific literacy should be improved basically and systematically from the early stages of formal education. Teachers who are responsible to educate children should be able to research in the areas of science education as well as science itself, and to have capacity to transmit them to the classroom. To do this, the graduate course and the science education within the system beyond the level of college education are essential parts of teacher education. In the graduate course, it is important that science itself and pedagogy of science should be balanced.

154㎸ 3core XLPE submarine cable transmission system was used supply power from mainland to island and connect to the grid of off-shore wind farm. This submarine cable system consists of the three core XLPE cables , fiber-optic submarine cable for telecommunication, flexible joint for factory joint, joint box for field repair joint and termination. The termination for land cable were used for this test. Therefore In this paper 3 core XLPE submarine cable, repair flexible joint for power cable and fiber optic cable joint was described. In order to verify the mechanical and electrical performances for cable and joint, the test was carried out. The mechanical test and electrical test were performed for the 3 core submarine cable and one rigid joint box for three core cable and fiber-optic cable in accordance with CIGRE recommendations(Electra No.171) and IEC 60840. The test results showed that they had sufficient properties and reliability.

The terrestrial leeches from the peripheral island of the Korean Peninsula were identified as Haemadipsa rjukjuana Oka, 1910. The arhynchobdellid family Haemadipsidae and H. rjukjuana are newly added into the Korean leech fauna. This species is blood-feeding leech that attacks birds and medium or large sized mammals primarily, including human. The sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c subunit I (COI), and the additional biology for this species are presented. This is the first study of terrestrial blood-feeding leeches in Korea.

We examined two reservoirs (lnkyung res. and Joongang res.) and two streams (Kyungan str. and Jecheon str.), all of which were eutrophic, during the 2010 warm season, to evaluate the water quality improvement activity (WQIA) of plant-mineral composite (PMC), which was previously developed to control suspended solids, including cyanobacterial bloom (Kim et al., 2010). We simultaneously measured both solid (S-MCLR) and dissolved microcystin-LR (D-MCLR), before and after PMC treatment, in the Joongang reservoir. Taking water body size and volume into account, we conducted the whole-scale experiment in the Inkyung reservoir, and mesocosm-scale experiments in the other three systems. The WQIAs of PMC were found to be comparatively high in SS (70~81%), TP (75~91%), BOD (65~91%), Chl-a (88~98%), phytoplankton(84~92%) and zooplankton(68~88%), except for the Kyungan stream, which was below 45% in all parameters. After PMC treatment, the concentrations of both SMCLR (47%) and D-MCLR (96%) decreased within two days, suggesting a mitigation possibility of hazardous chemicals such as agrochemicals and endocrine disrupters in the aquatic ecosystem. Our results collectively indicate that PMC is a useful agent to control suspended solids, including nuisance cyanobacterial bloom and their exudates, in an undisturbed water system with a long residence time.
矮化劑 UNICONAZOL이 몇가지 野生草花類의 生長에 미치는 影響

본 실험은 우리 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 몇가지 야생초화류의 절간신장 및 엽면적 변화에 미치는 Uniconazol의 영향을 구명하여 화단 및 화분용으로의 이용 가능성을 알아보기 위하여 실시되었으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. Uniconazol 처리후 절간신장이 억제되는 경향을 보였고 그 억제효과는 처리농도가 높을수록 커지는 경향을 보였으며 처리농도에서 약해를 나타내지 않았다. 등골나물과 함박꽃에서는 뚜렷한 처리효과가 나타나지 않았다. 도라지, 부처꽃, 산국에서는 처리효과가 오래 지속되지 않았으므로 2차 처리가 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 2. Uniconazol처리후 엽면적이 감소하는 경향을 보였으며 그 억제효과는 처리농도가 높아질수록 커지는 경향을 보였다. 엽장/엽폭의 비율은 뚜렷한 경향이 나타나지 않았다. 3. 개화에 미치는 Uniconazol의 영향은 추후 연구대상이 되겠으나 처리후 절간신장 및 잎의 생장이 억제되는 것으로 보아 야생초화류이 화단 및 화분용으로서의 이용 가능성이 높은 것으로 생각된다. There are many wild flowers in Korea which have good quality as ornamental plants. But the plant height of the flowers is so high that plant height should be reduced for the use as garden and pot flowers. So some growth retardant might be used to reduced plant height and leaf size of the flowers. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Uniconazol on the growth of some wild flowers. Plant height was reduced by Uniconazol treatment, and the effect increased with increasing concentration. There was no effect of Uniconazol on Deunggol-namul and Hambakggot. It was suggested that second treatment might be necessary on Doraji, Bucheo-ggot, and San-guk because retardant effect did not continued after 21 day from treatment. Leaf width and length also reduced by Uniconazol treatment, and the effect increased with increasing concentration. According to these results, Uniconazol is effective to reduce the plant height and leaf size of these wild flowers, and the effect of Uniconazol on the flowering should be determined to confirm how to use Uniconazol on these wild flowers for the use as garden and pot flowers.

The self-aggregation behavior and microscopic characteristics of the PEG-b-PCL copolymer self-aggregates, prepared by solvent evaporation method, were investigated by `H NMR, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The PEG-PCL block copolymer formed nano-sized self-aggregates in an aqueous environment by intraand/or intermolecular association between hydrophobic PCL chains. Then, drug loading and its release behavior of clonazepam loaded PEG-b-PCL nanoparticles were investigated. The result revealed that hydrophobic-hydrophilic balances played a crucial role for drug loading and its release behaviors.

<P>1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase is commonly produced by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and has been suggested to facilitate the growth and stress tolerance of hosts via a reduction in levels of ethylene. However, the regulatory mechanism of ACC deaminase (AcdS) protein within host plant cells is largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated beneficial effects and post-translational modification of PGPR-originated AcdS proteins in plants. Compared with the wild-type, transgenic Arabidopsis expressing the Pseudomonas fluorescens acdS (PfacdS) gene displayed increased root elongation and reduced sensitivity to 10 μM exogenous ACC, an ethylene precursor. Arabidopsis expressing PfacdS also showed increased tolerance to high salinity (150 mM NaCl). PfAcdS proteins accumulated in transgenic Arabidopsis were rapidly degraded, which was potentially mediated by the 26S proteasome pathway. The degradation of PfAcdS was alleviated in the presence of exogenous ACC. In conclusion, our data suggest that the plant growth-promoting effects of bacterial AcdS proteins are potentially modulated via protein turnover inside the host plant cells. Such post-translational modification plays a physiological role in the mutualistic interactions between microorganisms and plants in the rhizospheric and/or endospheric niche.</P>
골다공성 척추 압박골절 환자에 대한 경피적 척추체성형술 : 최근 2년간 경험 Recent 2-year Experience

Objective: To describe the therapeutic outcome of percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures(OVCF) in recent years with review of literature. Methods: The authors have retrospectively reviewed a consecutive group of patients who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty in our institution between May 2000 and October 2002. The procedures were performed with Jamshidi needle via transpedicular approach followed by injection of polymethyl- methacrylate(PMMA) into the involved vertebral bodies. Prolo's economic and functional rating scale was used for therapeutic outcome assessments. Results: There were 91 patients(69 female, 22 male) with OVCF, with involvement of 147 vertebral bodies. The mean age was 72 years. The average BMD t-score was -3.78, indicative of severe osteoporosis. Minimal follow-up period was three months. And among these patients, 82.5% of patients were maintained over good condition. Extrusion of PMMA cement beyond the confines of the vertebral body was obseved in 13 cases(8.8%). Although most of them improved with conservative treatments without morbidities, two developed serious complications, one being pulmonary embolism and the other paraparesis. Conclusion: Percutaneous vertebroplasty is one of the effective minimal invasive treatment modalities in OVCF. However, proper biomechanical studies supporting these procedures are not fully evidenced. Serious complications, although rare, should be prevented with the aid of improved techniques and newer biocompatible materials along with better understanding of biodynamic and biomechanical impact on normal and already compromised vertebraes.

<P>Monodispersed Cu powders were prepared in aqueous solution through a wet-reduction process with hydrazine hydrate (N2H4·H2O). In particular, the effect of the dispersant such as sodium pyrophosphate decahydrate (Na4O7P2·10H2O), carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC) in water solvent on the particle size for the prepared Cu powders was investigated. The Cu powders essentially were monodispersed and irregular in shape regardless of reaction temperature and dispersant. In the case of adding the Na4O7P2·10H2O, the particle size of Cu powders increased with the increase of reaction temperature, which the particles were agglomerated in irregular shape and became to be large. The particle size distributions was asymmetry and to be broad regardless of reaction temperature. On the other hand, when the CMC was added, the particle size of Cu powders, which were much finer compared with adding the Na4O7P2·10H2O as a dispersant, was not much changed with reaction temperature. The particle size distribution of Cu powder was much narrow regardless of reaction temperature. As a result, it would be suggested that the CMC was more effective dispersant reagent to produce the monodispersed and fine Cu powders with narrow size distribution using the wet chemical reduction process</P>
