In spine sugery, iatrogenic vascular injury is unusual, and most common vascular injury is said to be a tear of the left common iliac artery. We report a case of retroperitoneal hematoma from lumbar segmental artery injury after posterior lumbar fusion and pedicle screw fixation. This 60-year-old woman presented with 6 months history of low back pain and radiating pain to the left lower leg. She complained of claudication after 10 meters walking due to spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis at L2-L5 level. She underwent multiple total laminectomy, posterior lumbar inter-body fusion, and transpedicular screw at L2-L5. During operation there was not evidence of complications such as bleeding. She complained of abdominal pain on post-operation I day and showed tenderness on left upper quadrant. Hemoglobin was 8.4 g/dL on postoperative laboratory examination. Abdominal CT scan revealed retroperitoneal hematoma. We performed angiography for evaluation of hematoma and found extravasation of dye at segmental artery of L4 level. We embolized the bleeding artery with coil successfully. Her postoperative abdominal pain and tenderness were relieved after then and discharged without pain or neurological deficit.
Spontaneous Intracranial Hemorrhage in Children: Analysis of Clinical Characteristics

Objective: Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage in children is not common and very different compared to adults. We analyze the etiology, hemorrhagic type, clinical features, and outcome of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage in children. Methods: Twenty-nine patients under 17years of age with nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage were analyzed retrospectively. Neonates were excepted. We reviewed their medical records in regard to their age, symptoms, radiologic findings, treatment, and prognosis. Results: Among 29 patients, there were 17boys and 12girls. The average age was 10.2years. The most common presenting symptom was mental deterioration, and the most common cause was arteriovenous malformation. Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage in children showed a better prognosis than in adults. Conclusion: Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage in children resulted mainly from vascular malformation and the prognosis is relatively good. More careful follow-up studies and active management are needed for better outcomes.

Thirteen edible plants previously reported to show inhibitory activities on farnesyl protein transferase (FPTase) and phosphatase of the regenerating liver-3 (PRL-3) were evaluated for inhibitory activity on the proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Four plant extracts, Oenothera erythrosepala, Perilla frutescens, Panicum miliaceum, and Quercus acutissima, significantly inhibited the proliferation of HUVECs induced by the basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) without cytotoxicity at 100 ${\mu}g/mL$. Myristica fragrans, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Syringa patula also showed inhibitory activity on the proliferation with only mild cytotoxicity.

The elongated styloid process is not uncommon, but only a few of these patients are symptomatic. This syndrome was first described by Eagle in 1937, and caused by abnormal long styloid process and ossification of stylohyoid ligament. But, the pathogenesis of elongation of styloid process is uncleear. Recently, the authors have experienced three cases of styloid syndrome. Under the general anesthesia, elongated styloid process were resected via intraoral approach. Postoperative course was uneventful and the symptoms were relieved in two cases, but in one case the symptom was recurred in three months after operation.

<P>The in- and out-of-plane lower critical fields and magnetic penetration depths of LiFeAs were examined. The anisotropy ratio Γ<SUB><I>H</I><SUB><I>c</I>1</SUB></SUB>(0) was smaller than the expected theoretical value, and increased slightly with increasing temperature from 0.6<I>T</I><SUB><I>c</I></SUB> to <I>T</I><SUB><I>c</I></SUB>. The small degree of anisotropy was numerically confirmed by considering the electron correlation effect. The temperature dependence of the penetration depths followed a power law (∼<I>T</I><SUP><I>n</I></SUP>) below 0.3<I>T</I><SUB><I>c</I></SUB>, with <I>n</I>>3.5 for both λ<SUB><I>ab</I></SUB> and λ<SUB><I>c</I></SUB>. Based on theoretical studies of iron-based superconductors, these results suggest that the superconductivity of LiFeAs can be represented by an extended <I>s</I><SUB>±</SUB>-wave due to the weak impurity scattering effect. And the magnitudes of the two gaps were also evaluated by fitting the superfluid density for both the in- and out-of-plane directions to the two-gap model. The estimated values for the two gaps are consistent with the results from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and specific-heat experiments.</P>

<P>Roots of <I>Glehnia littoralis</I> have been used to heal stroke as a traditional medicine. Even though many studies on this plant have been conducted, the secondary metabolites produced by its endophytes and their bioactivities have not been investigated thus far. Therefore, a new meroditerpenoid named sartorypyrone E (<B>1</B>) and eight known compounds (<B>2</B>-<B>9</B>) were isolated from extracts of cultured <I>Neosartorya fischeri</I> JS0553, an endophyte of <I>G. littoralis</I>. The isolated metabolites were identified using spectroscopic methods and chemical reaction, based on a comparison to literature data. Relative and absolute stereochemistries of compound <B>1</B> were also elucidated. To identify the protective effects of isolated compounds (<B>1</B>-<B>9</B>) in HT22 cells against glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, we assessed inhibition of cell death, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and calcium ion (Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>) influx. Among the isolates, compound <B>8</B>, identified as fischerin, showed significant neuroprotective activity on glutamate-mediated HT22 cell death through inhibition of ROS, Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> influx, and phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase, including c-Jun N-terminal kinase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and p38. The results suggested that the metabolites produced by the endophyte <I>N. fischeri</I> JS0553 might be related to the neuroprotective activity of its host plant, <I>G. littoralis</I>.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

<P>Melanin, a dark macromolecular pigment, protects skin from harmful damage. However, abnormal accumulation is responsible for hyperpigmentation disorders. Melanogenesis inhibitors have therefore become important constituents in cosmetic products for depigmentation. Torilis japonica Decandolle (Umbelliferae) is a biennial plant which is distributed in East Asia. Fruits of this plant have been used for the treatment of skin disease and inflammation. In our previous study, torilin, a major sesquiterpene of T. japonica, showed an inhibitory effect on melanin production in alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH)-activated B16 melanoma cells. Further extensive chromatographic separation resulted in thirteen compounds. On the basis of spectroscopic analysis, the structures of the compounds isolated were determined to be three new sesquiterpenes, viz. a guaiane-type, epoxytorilinol (1), a eudesmane-type, elematorilone (2) and a cadinane-type, cardinatoriloside (3), together with ten known sesquiterpenes (4-13). Of the compounds isolated, compounds 4-6 and 11-13 inhibited alpha-MSH-activated melanin production in B16 melanoma cells with IC50 values from 72.9 to 191.0 mu M.</P>
Clinical effect of a polysaccharide-rich extract of Acanthopanax senticosus on alcohol hangover.

<P>The present study aimed to examine the effects polysaccharide-rich extract of Acanthopanax senticosus (PEA) on blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and hangover as well as blood lab parameters. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover trial was conducted. The PEA was orally administered before and after consuming alcohol 1.75 g/kg of pure alcohol. After alcohol consumption, BAC was measured for evaluation of alcohol pharmacokinetics. In the second day morning, subjects were asked to complete the Acute Hangover Scale (AHS) questionnarie. BAC results showed little difference between placebo and PEA groups, indicating that PEA does not have an effect on the pharmacokinetics of alcohol. However, several AHS items (i.e., tired, headache, dizziness, stomachache and nausea) and AHS total score were significantly improved by PEA. Blood lab parameters were significantly altered by alcohol in the placebo group. The alteration by alcohol of glucose and C-reactive protein (CRP) level was significantly attenuated by PEA. Therefore, PEA may have potential to reduce the severity of the alcohol hangover by inhibiting the alcohol-induced hypoglycemia and inflammatory response.</P>
Enhancing Value of Public Construction Projects by Improving Contract Review Process

This study aims to suggest the method to enhance the value of public construction project during contract review process considering budget reduction for project profit and public interest enhancement simultaneously. The main results of this study are as follows: (1) Current method are considered to be improved from the point that cost reduction through current method could influence performance of the object of contract without conforming to user requirements or facilities' function. (2) In order to supplement current process, the method to evaluate the variation of performance and value was established based on facility type, participants on each phase, and their requirement. (3) Case study was conducted to verify suggested method, and showed the successful application in enhancing the value of construction projects on public sector.
