The present paper chronologically surveys and analyzes the contribution of Department of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University to Korean Buddhist Studies. Department of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University has been played an important role from the outset of Korean Buddhist Studies. Korean Buddhist Studies was in a position to leads Buddhist Studies in East Asia during the Unified Silla Dynasty, as was shown by activities of Uisang (義湘) and Wonhyo (元曉), but it declined until the beginning of nineteen century because of the popularization of Son chong (禪宗) and the suppression of Buddhism under the Choson dynasty. However, Buddhist Studies has restarted by the time of establishing Myeongjin School (明進學校) in 1906 and Jungang Buddhist School (中央佛敎學林) in 1916. Japanese Methodology of Buddhist Studies was generally introduced to Korean Buddhist Studies since the School raised to Jungang Buddhist College (中央佛敎專門學校) in 1930. After Korea``sindependent from Japan, Buddhist Studies was mainly conducted by Department of Buddhist Studies. Korean Buddhist Studies was officially initiated when Journal of Institute for Buddhist Culture (佛敎學報) was firstly published by Institute for Buddhist Culture (佛敎文化硏究院) in 1964. Buddhist Scholarship has been popular in other Universities across the country since the establishment of Korean Association for Buddhist Studies (韓國佛敎學會) in 1973. Its area has been extended from philosophical studies and historical studies into Interdisciplinary research and Applied sciences. International Association for Buddhist Thought and Culture (IABTC) was established in 2002 to promote the globalization of Korean Buddhist studies by encouraging comprehensive research of Buddhist thought and culture. This shows that Department of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University still leads Korean Buddhist Studies. Such quantitative expansion and qualitative diversification of Korean Buddhist Studies could not be possible without Department of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University. In this way, Department of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University has been played an prominent role throughout the history of Korean Buddhist Studies. This golden age of Korean Buddhist Studies is a new challenge for taking-off and self-renovation for Department of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the ‘Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue with Homi’ at Bonghwa Mountain in Gimhae. This statue is the centerpiece of the new Buddhist movement centered on rural areas and a symbol of creative Buddhist service. The meaning of cultivation in the homi is the same context as the etymology. It contains an official saying, We will open a new world by plowing the fields of our minds through the Homi. It was a projection of the spirit of the times and a new horizon of the Buddhist culture movement. In this discussion, we looked at the Buddhist cultural implications contained in the ‘Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue with Homi’. It has the purpose of overcoming the pain of life and sharing pleasure and bringing peace to all. In this paper, the characteristics of Korean Buddhist culture are discussed only in the field of mission, faith and experience. We will try to gauge the current status of the Korean Buddhist movement through examples such as the tinkling of a Wind-bell that has delivered Buddhist messages that go beyond Buddhism and the Buddhist culture movement, the pilgrimage of 108 Sansa, which has become a religious movement in which the ordination and practice have become one, and the Temple Stay, which stands as a representative brand of traditional Korean cultural experience. Finally, I made a suggestion for the future of Buddhist culture movement. First, rediscovery of new Buddhist culture space is necessary. Second, the temple should be reborn as a life and culture center that serves as a cultural space. Third, various measures should be sought to open and share Buddhist cultural assets. Through this discussion, we hope that the value and great energy contained in the ‘Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue with Homi’ will be used to inform more people and become a Avalokitesvara sacred place of our times.

This writing considers the characteristics of the introductions to the Buddhist history from modern times to the present. These writtings are classified into the agglomeration period of the Buddhist materials, the foundation period of the Buddhist historical studies and its full blossom period. The views of the authors are also further classified into those of the insider, the bystander and the outsider. Firstly, when it comes to the selection of the materials of the Buddhist history and its distance, the viewpoint of the insider is positive, with the authors taking the materials at face value and mainly dealing with the activities of illustrious monks. The view of the bystander is persuasive. The bystander authors tend to restore a variety of histories of the public Buddhist, while criticizing government-patronized monks and their idle life. It seems that the viewpoint of the outsider is close to that of the bystander and consistent in the factual description. Secondly, in regarding to restoring its main agent and its distance, the insiders only focus on illustrious monks and are not interested in the female Buddhist and the issue of the public Buddhist. The viewpoint of the original bystanders is different from that of the former monks. The view of the outsiders are relatively objective to anti-Buddhism. Thirdly, as for Buddhist synoptic history and its distance, the historical story of Korean Buddhism has been narrated throughout history not just during the Joseon Dynasty. Korean Buddhism is characterized as Buddhism for national protection and the synoptic history of Korean Buddhism is as Korean public Buddhism. It passes unnoticed that the act of faith of Japanese Buddhists maintained authentic Buddhism under Japanese imperialism. The whole history of Korean Buddhism should not be restricted to the studies of illustrious monks and their activities but include the religious life of the public Buddhist in Korea.

This study is an investigation and analysis of the current status of reference books for beginner about Buddhist meditation from 2008 to 2019 in Korea. In the past decade, we have identified the number of species published and the characteristics of authors in relation to the publication of Buddhist Meditation. The quantitative increase in reference books of Buddhist meditation seen from 2011 to 2013 suggests that interest in overall Buddhist meditation has increased in the domestic publishing world at this time. This can be attributed to the growing social awareness and popularity of meditation, mainly due to the increased research of meditation (especially, mindfulness meditation) related to psychotherapy and the increasing public interest in meditation for healing and well-being. In the author's major field, non-clerical scholars who majored in Buddhism rarely wrote reference books or introductory textbooks on Buddhist meditation. Considering that 42% of reference books of Buddhist meditation published in the last decade have been foreign books, Korean Buddhist scholars are less interested in Buddhist meditation. On the other hand, the proportion of the authors who are not Buddhist monks and not majored in Buddhist study among domestic authors is relatively large and shows a yearly increase. As such, the continuation of the writing of reference books of Buddhist meditation by non-majors suggests that the identity or professionalism of Buddhist meditation is not strong. This study has only limited quantitative analysis on the publication of reference gooks for beginner of Buddhist meditation, and has not been able to analyze precise contents on the subjects. It is hoped that further discussions will be conducted in the future as complementary research on reference books and introductory textbooks of Buddhist.
