      • The Middle Lamella Remainders on the Surface of Various Mechanical Pulp Fibres

        The surface of various mechanical pulp fibres including thermomechanical pulp (TMP), chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP), and alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP) fibres, were characterized using SEM, AFM, and XPS. With SEM and AFM, middle lamella material was observed to be non-fibrillar, patch-like, while fibre secondary wall was observed to have a microfibrillar structure. It was found that after the first-stage refiner, lignin-rich middle lamella remainders are present on the fibre surface of all three pulps, although most of the fibre surfaces expose microfibrillar structure. After the final-stage refining, large amounts of granules are present on the TMP fibre surface. In contrast, most middle lamella remainders remain on the surface of CTMP fibres after final stage refining and even after peroxide bleaching. XPS results have confirmed that the non-fibrillar surface material is the lignin-rich middle lamella remainder., and the remainders of middle lamella contribute to the high surface lignin concentration.

      • A Method of Zero self-modification and Temperature Compensation for Indoor Air Quality Detection Based on a software Model

        It is very difficult to apply non-dispersive infrared sensor to detect the indoor air quality and maintain very low zero and temperature drift over long periods. Frequently manual zero setting and calibration are required. To solve the issues of zero and temperature drift of non-dispersive infrared sensor, a software model based on zero gas intensity, reference channels intensity, standard temperature, environmental temperature, temperature drift coefficient, etc. has been established to automatically modify and compensate the zero and temperature drift existing in the long-term continuous operation of the infrared sensor. The test result and long-term application indicate the detection precision of the instrument is less than 5%F.S in various changing environmental conditions. The average detection precision of carbon dioxide has been improved from 9.26% before comprehensive processing to 1.23% after processing, while the average detection precision of methane has been improved from 10.61% before comprehensive processing to 0.70% after processing. As a result, the disadvantages existing in many gas detectors including poor stability and short calibration cycle have been overcome, thus effectively improving the detection precision and stability of the instrument and reducing the maintenance cost.

        Low-Temperature Synthesis of Near-Monodisperse Globular MoS2 Nanoparticles with Sulphur Powders

        Nanoparticles (NPs) with high uniformity have been extensively investigated for their excellent chemical stability. Near-monodisperse globular MoS2 NPs were prepared with sulphur powders (SPs) as a sulphur source by a one-pot polyol-mediated process without surfactants, transfer agents and toxic agents at 170–190 ℃. The as-processed SPs greatly affected the formation of the MoS2 NPs after low-activity sulphur (S8)n was reassembled from common SPs (S8). The average size of MoS2 NPs can be reduced remarkably from 100–200 nm to 50 nm by introducing low amounts of MnCl2. A preliminary four-step growth mechanism based on the aggregation-coalescence model was also proposed. This green and simple method may be an alternative to the common hot-injection and heating-up methods for the preparation of monodisperse NPs, particularly transition metal dichalogenides.
