VideOSC: Moving control from gesture to texture
Stefan Nussbaumer(스테판 누스바우머) 한국전자음악협회 2016 에밀레 Vol.14 No.-
VideOSC is an OSC controller for mobile phones and tablet computers, running on Googles Android operating system. Unlike many others it does not follow a conventional concept using sliders or knobs for manual interaction. Its concept of control is based on the incoming video stream of the device’ inbuilt camera, using the RGB information of the pixels to control sound synthesis or other forms of electronic media. In its current version this functionality is amended by sensors like acceleration, orientation, magnetic field, etc. The article discusses the technical concept of the application, its development background and practical considerations, especially in combination with SuperCollider, an algorithmic programming environment for sound, used as the computer-based sound generation engine.
A Comparison of Separated and Combined Winding Concepts for Bearingless Centrifugal Pumps
Raggl, Klaus,Nussbaumer, Thomas,Kolar, Johann W. The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2009 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.9 No.2
Bearingless centrifugal pump systems are employed in the semiconductor, pharmaceutical and medical industries due to their facility for pumping high purity fluids without particle contamination. Two types of forces have to be generated by the stator units, namely bearing forces for achieving magnetic levitation, and drive forces for producing the needed pump torque. The generation of these forces requires bearing and drive windings, which can be realized as separate bearing and drive coils or as identical, combined coils on the stator claws. In this paper, a detailed comparison between these two winding concepts is undertaken, whereby the copper losses, the power electronics losses, and the achievable pump output pressure are evaluated for both concepts. For each criterion a ratio of improvement is calculated analytically which allows evaluation of the performance of the two winding concepts for any given pump operating point and design. Finally, also practical features such as control complexity, cabling effort and manufacturability are discussed and measurements on prototype systems are carried out to validate the considerations.

Comparison of Winding Concepts for Bearingless Pumps

Bearingless slice motors as employed in semiconductor, pharmaceutical and medical industry perform magnetic levitation by radial bearing forces and rotation by tangential forces. This requires bearing and drive windings, which can be realized as separate bearing and drive coils or as identical, concentrated coils on the stator claws. In this paper, a detailed comparison between these two winding concepts is undertaken, where the coil losses, the coil volume, the power electronics requirements and the achievable rotation speed are evaluated. Furthermore, practical features such as control complexity, cabling effort and manufacturability are taken into account. Finally, the trade-off between losses, volume and realization effort will be discussed in order to give a guideline for the selection of the appropriate winding concept for a specific application of a bearingless pump.

Using an illustrative case study - the ransomware infection in the San Francisco Municipal Transportation (Muni) payment system - this paper analyzes the potential implications from ransomware, extortion, and denial of availability attacks in an era of increasingly widespread embedded computing - the era of “the Internet of Things” and “Smart Cities.” The old model of extortion by organized criminals was largely localized, and typically included a demonstration of the ability to use violence in a geographically specified area to extract sums of money for "protection." This paper examines the traditional dynamics of extortion and protection, how those dynamics apply in denial of availability attacks in general and particularly in cryptoransomware attacks. It also explores the changing business models of cyber extortion along the characteristics of number of victims and level of value extraction. Finally, it sheds light on ways in which organized crime may be able to leverage its historical advantages (localized geographical control, access to insiders and institutions, etc.) to adjust cryptoransomware, or other availability attacks, to extort high levels of value from important institutions or organizations.
