Shakespeare's Hamlet would have been a very different play if Shakespeare had not chosen to create the Ghost as he did. He has given it dramatic life and has made it a character who contributes greatly to the plot and meaning of the drama. Many scholars and critics of Shakespeare have questioned the meaning and significance of the Ghost of Hamlet's father. The question is of importance as regards not merely the history of ideas or the constitution of Shakespeare's mind, but still, more, as regards the interpretation of his artistic method This paper examines the dramatic and religious significance of the Ghost, and the dramatic and religious effect it has on Hamlet. Dramatically, the Ghost is a success. It has defined the plot, has been a source of conflict and struggle and has heightened the tragic dimension of the drama. The Ghost has a life of its own, a character and appeal of its own, It is the "linchpin" of the drama. Remove it and the drama falls to pieces. In the area of religion the Ghost defies definition because it evokes several interpretations, Some feel it is a catholic Ghost; others believe it to be Protestant and some feel that it is pagan. Its ambiguity compounds the moral dilemma of Hamlet, Shakespeare has succeeded in his creation of the Ghost in that it expresses what people instinctively believe or want to believe: that is that souls are immortal and that they transcend the limits of human boundaries. Shakespeare has given credence to the supernatural influence on men's lives whatever meaning they wish to attach to the Ghost. The Ghost haunts Hamlet's soul. It is the source of his internal struggle, his conflict with what he aspires to be and what the Ghost's command will make of him. The Ghost contributes to Hamlet's downfall, to his tragic ending. But through this tragedy, initiated by the Ghost, Denmark embarks on a new life. The reality of the Ghost and the validity of his message are established in the drama. Through the Ghost's dramatic life it symbolizes the supernatural, the reality outside of man's control, the mysterious. After examining its dramatic and religious significance and its impact on Prince Hamlet, we have a better understanding of the Ghost's richness and uniqueness. But it still remians a "questionalbe shape". It cannot be said that the Ghost is good or that it is evil; that it is Catholic or that it is Protestant. It remains "questionable" and ambiguous thereby providing Ham-let with struggles that are profound and complex and that give him tragic greatness.
