A total of 419 slaughtered cattle were used to investigate the serum Ig G titers to the Mannheimia haemolytica Al whole cell and leukotoxin recognized with important virulence factor in bacterial pathogenesis. Data obtained in this study were represented with average absorbance ± standard deviation. Serum Ig G titers were detected with the ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 at 490nm. Whole cell titers were higher than leukotoxin antibody on the whole. Antibody titers of slaughtered cattle between races, ages have no significant difference but gradual decrease under aging in dairy cow for whole cell (decline mean titer from 0.29 to 0.27 according to age) was undertaken. Holstein bulls shipped from Seoul province had a significantly lower Ig G titers than those from another ones (p<0.05).
Case report : Devastating botulism outbreak in cattle associated with contaminated soil

We describe her cases of botulism at two dairy cattle farms where the soil was submerged by flooding from an adjacent river. All cattle at farms 1 and 2, 91 and 56 head, respectively died or were euthanized with posterior flaccid paralysis and recumbency. Necropsy and histopathological examination showed no specific lesions. Botulinum toxin type B was detected in sera of the arrected cattle, and type D toxin was found in ruminal contents and soil from cattle pens at both farms.A likely source of the botulinum toxin is the soil of the adjacent river, from which toxins were introduced during flooding To our Knowledge, these appear to be the first cases of bovine botulism associated with contaminated pen soil after flooding.
Physical and chemical properties of γ-irradiated EVOH film

The effects of γ-irradiation on ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) were investigated. Oxygen permeability decreased as irradiation dose increased in non-oriented (EF-CR), biaxially oriented (EF-XL) EVOH, and nylon/EVOH/PP. Irradiation increased tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (%E) of EF-CR; whereas, TS of EF-XL was not significantly changed and %E of EF-XL decreased. Irradiation had no effect on TS and %E of nylon/EVOH/PP. Four volatile compounds, ε-caprolactam, 2-propyldecanol, 2-butyloctanol, and 2,3-diethyl-2,3-dimethyl-1,4-butanediol, were detected after irradiation. Optical properties were not changed.

<P>A 58-year-old woman complained of painless jaundice. The serology showed total bilirubin 10.6 mg/dL with direct bilirubin of 7.0 mg/dL. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan disclosed an abnormal arrangement of the abdominal viscera and dilation of the biliary tree. A nearly 1.4 cm-sized periampullary mass was seen. These findings are compatible with situs ambiguous with polysplenia and were suggestive of a periampullary tumor. Due to her unusual anatomical features, the patient underwent an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in the supine position instead of in the conventional prone position. ERCP showed that the common bile duct (CBD) diameter was increased to 20 mm. Microscopic findings of the biopsy specimen of papillary mass were compatible with an adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. The clinical stage was stage IA (T1N0M0). Eight days later, a papillectomy was carried out by endoscopic snare resection. Six months later, follow-up studies, including ERCP, abdominal CT and 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (<SUP>18</SUP>-FDG PET)-CT scan, showed no evidence of recurrence. Although the success rate of supine position ERCP may be influenced by the extent of the intestinal malrotation and the position of the duodenum, we conclude that supine position ERCP can be carried out effectively in a patient with situs anomaly.</P>

Objective: The biomechanical stabilities between the anterior plate fixation after anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDFP) and the posterior transpedicular fixation after ACDF(ACDFTP) have not been compared using human cadaver in bilateral cervical facet dislocation. The purpose of this study is to compare the stability of ACDFP, a posterior wiring procedure after ACDFP(ACDFPW), and ACDFTP for treatment of bilateral cervical facet dislocation. Methods: Ten human spines (C3-T1) were tested in the following sequence: the intact state, after ACDFP(Group 1), ACDFPW(Group 2), and ACDFTP(Group 3). Intervertebral motions were measured by a video-based motion capture system. The range of motion(ROM) and neutral zone(NZ) were compared for each loading mode to a maximum of 2.0Nm. Results: ROMs for Group 1 were below that of the intact spine in all loading modes, with statistical significance in flexion and extension, but NZs were decreased in flexion and extension and slightly increased in bending and axial rotation without significances. Group 2 produced additional stability in axial rotation of ROM and in flexion of NZ than Group 1 with significance. Group 3 provided better stability than Group 1 in bending and axial rotation, and better stability than Group 2 in bending of both ROM and NZ. There was no significant difference in extension modes for the three Groups. Conclusion: ACDFTP(Group 3) demonstrates the most effective stabilization followed by ACDFPW(Group 2), and ACDFP(Group 1). ACDFP provides sufficient strength in most loading modes, ACDFP can provide an effective stabilization for bilateral cervical facet dislocation with a brace.
Expression of CYLD and NF- <i>κ</i> B in Human Cholesteatoma Epithelium

<P>The tumor suppressor CYLD is a deubiquitinating enzyme that inhibits activation of the NF-<I>κ</I>B, which has key roles in inflammation and apoptosis. We hypothesized that CYLD may regulate the NF-<I>κ</I>B signaling pathway in cholesteatoma. We conducted immunohistochemistry to examine the expression of CYLD and NF-<I>κ</I>B in 16 cases of cholesteatoma and paired cases of retroauricular (RA) skin. In cholesteatoma epithelium, activated NF-<I>κ</I> B expression was significantly higher than in RA skin, whereas CYLD expression was significantly lower in cholesteatoma epithelium than in RA skin (<I>P</I> < .05). Furthermore, a significant inverse correlation was detected between CYLD and activated NF-<I>κ</I>B expression in cholesteatoma epithelium (<I>r</I> = −0.630). We found that CYLD reduced and activated increased NF-<I>κ</I>B in cholesteatoma epithelium in comparison to RA skin. The inverse correlation between CYLD and activated NF-<I>κ</I>B in cholesteatoma may be involved in cholesteatoma epithelial hyperplasia.</P>
Clostridium perfringens type A associated enteritis in a Shitzu dog

Acute hemorrhagic enteritis was diagnosed in a seven-month-old male Shitzu dog dying of blood stained diarrhea and vomiting. Clinical findings were anorexia, dullness and sudden death after massive bloody diarrhea. At necropsy, main lesion was the hemorrhage in small intestine, mainly duodenum and jejunum. Microscopically, Gram positive long bacilli were massively detected on the mucose epithelial cells and necrotic debris of small intestine. Coagulative necrosis of epithelial cells and thrombosis of small intestine were also identified. However, there was no lesion of crypt epithelium. Mineral infiltration in both gastric mucosa and renal tubules was detected and proliferation of fibrous tissue was also shown in corticomedullary regions. In bacterial examination, C perfringens was isolated in anaerobic culture and it was confirmed to type A by multiplex PCR. Therefore, the dog was diagnosed as C perfringens type A associated enteritis with uremia.

This study was conducted to compare the hemostatic efficacy of three ferric subsulfate- and chitosan-based styptics as a powder and a gel containing ferric subsulfate and chitosan (FSC-PO and FSC-G, respectively) and a soaked pad containing ferric subsulfate and lidocaine (FSL-SP) using a rat tail bleeding model. The cytotoxicity of the styptics against L-929 mouse fibroblasts was also evaluated using a cell counting kit-8 assay. Four groups of 10 rats each were assigned to the three different styptics and a non-treated control groups. Rat tail tips were transected, after which styptics were applied with pressure. The wounds were observed for hemostasis for 3 min, then irrigated with saline to check for recurrent hemorrhage. L-929 mouse fibroblasts were exposed to extracts of the styptics (100 mg/mL) and their dilutions (1:10, 1:100, and 1:1,000). FSC-PO and FSC-G more effectively controlled initial hemorrhage than FSL-SP (p = 0.033). Additionally, FSC-PO and FSC-G more effectively maintained hemostasis than the control group (p = 0.02 and p < 0.01, respectively). However, all styptics showed enhanced cytotoxicity against L-929 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, although FSC-PO and FSC-G would be recommended to control hemorrhage, the benefits of styptics must be balanced against the clinical significance of their cytotoxicity.
