중도식토기 문화유적이 집중적으로 발굴된 강원도권의 동해안과 북한강 및 남한강유역의 문화양상을 토대로 다음과 같은 중도식토기 및 그 문화의 동북전파가설을 제시하였다. 중도식토기 및 그 문화는 러시아 극동의 끄로우노프까문화의 외반단경 무문토기 전통으로 연결되며, 이러한 독특한 무문토기 전통은 한반도 동해안의 함경도와 강원도를 거쳐 남하하였고, 태백산맥을 건너 북한강의 수계를 따라 한반도 중부권으로 확산되었다. 이러한 문화확산 현상은 강원도 동해안의 중도식토기(외반단경 무문토기) 유적과 그에 앞선 무문토기문화 유적의 존재양태에 비추어 볼 때 기존의 토착 무문토기집단이 새로운 문화전통이나 요소를 수용한 결과로 볼 수 없으며, 새로운 집단의 동해안 루트를 이용한 한반도 안으로의 확산현상으로 보아야한다 따라서 중도식토기문화의 담당집단은 러시아 극동일대로부터 강원 영동의 남부지 역인 동해시에 이르는 동해안 일원 의 '중도식토기-타날문토기-독특한 주거지-철기' 등으로 구성되는 철기문화의 기층집단을 형성 하였으며, 지역별로 독자적 정치체로 분립되었다. 즉, 그들의 모체집단이 공유한 대표적 전통이 중도식토기이며, 이러한 기본전통 및 공반문화 요소들이 지 역-시기 별로 분화되고 변화발전한 결 과 연해주일대, 함경도, 강원영동, 강원영서 및 한강권 등 지역별로 토기양식, 공반유물, 주거지구 조, 취락입지, 철기요소 등의 차이를 이룩한 것으로 본다. 특히 강원도와 중부권에서 중도식토기와 공반되는 타날문토기 및 회색토기 요소는 회색토기가 漢문화요소가 유입된 것과 마찬가지로 타날문토기도 외래적인 요소로서 구체적인 수용의 경로는 앞으로 구체화시켜야 하겠으나 중도식 토기의 모체집단이 두만강권으로부터 강원도 동해안으로 확산하는 어느 시점에서 수용된 것으로 보인다. Discussing on the cultural patterns in the regions of Mountain East of Kangwon Province as well as the North and South Han River, where a number of so called 'Chungdo Style Plain Pottery Culture' sites were recently excavated, a theoretical framework for the northeastern diffusionary route was proposed. In terms of cultural tradition as well as diffusionary route, the Chungdo Style Plain Pottery is connected to the plain pottery of the Krounovka culture in Russian fareastem region. This cultural tradition involving the pottery spread down along the Korean East Coastal corridor into Hamgyong and Kangwon regions, and thereafter into the west-central region along the streamline of the Han River having crossed the Taebaek Mountain. This process of cultural development must be understood as an introduction of a new cultural tradition into Korea according to the new people's movement instead of taking it as the inception of foreign cultural tradition by the people preexisting in Korea, because of the unique distinction in residential pattern between the Chungdo Style Plain Pottery Culture and the preexisting Mumun Pottery Culture. In the course of such movement down along the East Coastal region of Korea, the new people settled down branching into a number of regional societies with the establishment of their own individual polity, as seen not only in common traits involving the Chungdo Style Plain Pottery, the Stamped Pottery, the house shape and iron tools, but also in their regional clustering according to corresponding political society. As for the occurrence of the stamped grey pottery with the Chungdo Style Plain Pottery, that is the handmade plain pottery with flaring short neck, it must have been incepted at certain point of time in the course of people's movement carrying the Chungdo Style Pottery along the East Coastal region of Korea.
