Vol.10 No.2

In this study, dynamic deformation characteristics of sands under dry, saturated drained and undrained conditions were investigated at small to intermediate strains using the modified Stokoe-type torsional shear tests. The equipment was modified to saturate the specimen and to maintain the B-value above 0.99 during the test. On two types of sands, Geumgang sand from Korea and Toyoura sand from Japan, tests were carried out at various drainage conditions, void ratios, and effective confining pressures. Based on the test results, dynamic deformation characteristics, shear modulus (G) and damping ratio (D), and/or pore-water pressure were measured with strain amplitude and number of loading cycles. Variations of G and D at small ($\gamma_c<{10}^{-3}\%$) to medium (${10}^{-3}\%<\gamma_c<{10}^{-1}\%$) strains were measured under various drainage conditions, and test results were intensively compared considering drainage conditions.

Seismic response of single degree of freedom system supported by shallow foundation was analyzed by using nonlinear explicit finite difference element code. Numerical analysis results were verified with dynamic centrifuge test results of the same soil profile and structural dimensions with the numerical analysis model at a centrifugal acceleration of 20g. Differences between the analysis and the test results induced by the boundary conditions of control points can be reduced by adding additional local damping to the natural born cyclic hysteretic damping of the soil strata. The analysis results show good agreement with the test results in terms of both time histories and response spectra. Thus, it can be concluded that the nonlinear explicit finite difference element code will be a useful technique for estimating seismic residual displacement, earthpressure etc. which are difficult to measure during laboratory tests and real earthquake.

This paper presents the results from three-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis undertaken to provide insight intothe lateral behaviors of piled gravity base foundation (GBF) for offshore wind turbine. The piled GBF was originallydeveloped to support the gravity based foundation in very soft clay soil. A GBF is supported by five piles in a crossarrangement to achieve additional vertical bearing capacity. This study considered four different cases including a) singlepile, b) three-by-three group pile (with nine piles), c) cross-arrangement group pile (with five piles), and d) piled GBF. All the cases were installed in homogenous soft clay soil with undrained shear strength of 20 kPa. From the numericalresults, p-y curves and thus P-multiplier was back-calculated. For the group pile cases, the group effect decreased withincreasing the number of piles. Interestingly, for the piled GBF, the P-multipliers showed a unique trend, comparedto the group pile cases. This study concluded that the global lateral behaviour of the piled GBF was influenced stronglyby the interaction between GBF and contacted soil surface.
