Literary works are generally said to have objective meaning which the reader should search for. New Critics shifted the source of meaning traditionally assigned to the author to the text itself. And the structuralists sought the grammar of literature in which the literary structure and meanings are found. Post structuralists such as Barthes and Derrida were the first to confront the problem of the sign and of the closure of meaning through the concept of the text developed in its post-structuralist sense. Whereas the work is a finished object, the text is presented as the field of free floating signifiers which are subject to no ultimate signified. Barthes suggests two kinds of text according to its textual characteristics. Writerly text is a text where the reader can write it again in many different ways and interpretations which would only consist in desseminating the original text. Readerly text is somewhat like a classical work in which the reader can read and write the text with ease and pleasure. Barthes also introduces a semiological method of analysis on myth and readerly text. According to Barthes, writing is the singifier of the literary myth which receives from the concept of literature a new signification. The Scarlet Letter may be a kind of myth in which the scarlet letter A as an empty signifier practices the infinite deferral of the signified and reveals an ideology of puritanism through significaton.

Lacanian theory of cognition is a successful reinterpretation of Freudianism in ways relevant to all those concerned with the question of the human subject, its place in society, and its relationship to language. Lacan explains his theory in terms of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real. In the infant's development stage, no clear distinction between subject and object is found. Lacan defines this state of being as the Imaginary, in which the infant recognizes itself in the mirror through the mirror stage. It is in the Symbolic that the human being acquires his individuality. But this accession to the Symbolic brings about the division of subject which results from the mediation of language. Another important thing in relation to the Symbolic is the Oedipus complex and the castration complex. The subject constituted by the prohibition (the Name of the Father), the Law, and the castration complex forms the social unconscious. Besides the Imaginary and the Symbolic, Lacan suggest the third order, the Real, which differs from reality and can be found out as an entity with our consciousness. Milton's Paradise Lost is an good example which shows how human being acquires desire and unconsciousness and become a subject. To verify the necessities of Adam and Eve's decision to break God's command, Lacanian theory of cognition offers very useful and valid tools of analysis.

Being like God, the author of 19th century realist fiction controlled all the action and lives of the characters in his fiction. In the modernism and post-modernism, however, the author's authoritative power vanished and he remains only as a narrator. This vanishment of the author happens in both the theory of fiction and the works of fiction at the same time. This aim of this is to discuss the role of an author in the modern novel and show how the authoritative author disappears and transforms into only as a narrator. In The Craft of Fiction, Percy Lubbock, an English theorist , distinguishes narrative technique as `seneic` and `panoramic.` He analyzes Flaubert's Madam Bovary, giving the preponderance on the panoramic over the senic. In so doing, he claims that the showing, the craft which reduces interferences of the author, is superior to telling: a good fiction is that which reduces author's interference and provokes reader's interset. New Criticism is a literary movement that tries to find themes in the structure and form of the work. Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren, in Understanding Fiction, considers the fiction as an organic structure of plot, character, and theme. They focus their attention not on the life and intention of the author or judgement of readers, but on the constituents of the fiction. The `showing` of Lubbock and the theory of New Criticism altogether exclude the author. It is Wayne C. Booth who take author and reader back into the theory. In The Rhetoric of Fiction, Booth subjects the showing to the telling : the showing is also a kind of the telling, and the organic structure of fiction includes the interference of author at its base. He uses the term `the implied author.` the author who is hidden in the narrative technique. He tells of `the return of the author,` but it is not the authoritative author of 19th century. The author returned to the fiction, but not as an authoritative author but as a strategist, inventor of techniques. Booth's theory of `implied author` was introduced when the postmodern fiction comes into existence. With the advent of `implied author,` the author was fallen into a strategist, introducing the various narrative technique. Dorrit Cohn's Transparent Minds is to study on how the narrator narrates the character's psychological state of mind. The narrator narrates the fiction not through his own voice, but through the monologue of characters. After all, in the modern novel especially in the postmodernism novel, the author is transformed into the devicer and loses his authoritative power.

월리스 스티븐스(Wallace Stevens. 1879-1955)는 인간의 위대한 경험의 하나는 신의 존재가 이 지상에서 사라지는 것을 보는 것이고 신은 인간의 상상력에 의해 만들어진 창조물에 지나지 않는다고 말한다. 인간의 정신적 지주였던 신 대신에 현실이 정신의 진정한 중심이 되는 이 세계에서 시인의 역할은 지상의 위대한 시를 쓰는 것이다. 천국과 지옥에 관한 위대한 시는 많이 씌어졌으나 지상의 위대한 시는 아직 씌어지지 않았기 때문이다. 시인의 눈에 비친 이 세계는 불모의 땅이 아니라 신이 사라졌기 때문에 오히려 활력이 넘치는 건강한 세계이다. 이 특이한 현실인식은 스티븐스 시구성의 근간이 된다.

Sesquiterpene Lactone

Sesquiterpene lactones have been increasingly reported during the last decade due to their various biological and pharmacological activities, especially cytotoxic and antitumor properties. The activities come generally from the reaction of sesquiterpene lactone with the sulfhydryl(SH) group of biologically essential proteins, such as enzymes. Sesquiterpene lactones can be classified into about 20 skeletal types, but the majority of sesquiterpene lactone belongs to four categories; germacranolide, guaianolide, eudesmanolide and pseudoguaianolide. Here, these four skeletal types of sesquiterpene lactones are reviewed and exemplified respectively. Biological and phamacological properties, and spectroscopic indentification of sesquiterpene lactones are also discussed.

Polysaccharide fraction from the fruits of Xanthium strumarium(SLPI) was extracted and purified by sephadex gel filtration. SLP1 fraction was tested for the effects on the spleen cell culture in vitro. SLP1 allows growth of spleen cells up to 2 months in culture, suggesting the immunoregulatory activity of this polysaccharide fraction. The molecular weight of SLP1 fraction was found to be about 6,300 dalton by sephadex gel filtration chromatography using standard dextrans.
