온라인 커뮤니티를 활용한 스크린 영어수업에 대한 학습자 반응 연구
성지희(Sung Jee hee) 영상영어교육학회 2007 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.8 No.1
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of online community as a language teaching and learning aid in Screen English classrooms. This study introduces web-integrated activities designed for Screen English classrooms. The students were asked to participate in a variety of activities. Students were asked to perform synchronous online chatting in English through the Internet about a given topic. Students were asked to answer a few pre-listening comprehension checkup questions and write down at least 15 meaningful or important sentences as they watch the episode of the week and translate them. They were asked to use English only during class. A survey questionnaire was administered to analyze students' responses toward the use of online community in Screen English classes. The analysis of data suggests that the use of online community is effective in helping students in learning English through movies and sitcoms. This study might help English teachers in designing effective activities by using online community. Classroom activities can be designed with basic computer skills in order to provide students background information, extending reading, and the opportunity to chat with other classmates. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are also suggested.
성지희(Sung Jee hee) 영상영어교육학회 2012 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.13 No.1
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of Screen English education combined with service-learning. Service-learning is a pedagogical approach which allows college students to help others by applying what they learn to real-life situations and to reflect on their learning. It is an effective way of promoting students' language learning and helping them to accomplish their personal goals. This is achieved through students' active participation in a meaningful service-learning program, interactive reflection, discussions, and communication. The results of a case study integrating service-learning pedagogy and Screen English instruction are discussed. Ten college students volunteered to participate in a service-learning program that involves using the movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005) and were asked to keep journals over a period of 16 weeks. Students' journals were analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of Screen English combined with service-learning. The findings of the study which can be helpful for English teachers in designing their own effective service-learning program using Screen English are discussed. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are also suggested.

성지희(Sung Jee hee) 영상영어교육학회 2008 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.9 No.1
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of movie clips in helping EFL students enhance their speaking competence through creative drama. Movie videos and DVDs have been an important part of the EFL learning environment. Movies have been a valuable and dynamic language learning tool which offers contextual and visual clues to students and develops learner motivation. Students are asked to watch a selected movie clip with the sound track off and they act out the scene. Based on the given movie clip, they are asked to create and develop a series of related scenes by using their own imagination. They are also asked to act out the scenes and the script which they create. A survey questionnaire was developed and administered to analyze students' responses toward the use of video clips in Screen English classes. The findings of the study are discussed and can be helpful for English teachers in designing their own effective speaking activities by using the movie clips. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are also suggested.
성지희(Sung Jee hee) 영상영어교육학회 2010 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.11 No.1
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of the online video clips as the warm up activity for EFL college freshmen to enhance their listening and speaking competence. Online video clips offer the authentic material that is so important in the EFL learning environment. In particular, online video clips are a dynamic language learning tool which offers contextual and visual clues to EFL students. Good EFL pedagogy requires that "warm-ups" be used to grab the students' attention at the beginning of a class period. It is proposed that warm up activities that use effective online video clips can promote a student-centered way of learning and generate language learner motivation in EFL setting. To validate this claim, twenty eight college students were asked to participate in warm up activities that involve watching a selected online video clip. Based on the given online video clip, they were told to ask and answer various questions, and have a conversation with their group members or partner. A survey questionnaire was developed and administered to analyze students' responses toward the use of online video clips in the beginning of each class over a period of 14 weeks. The findings of the study are discussed and can be helpful for English teachers in designing their own effective warm up activities by using the online video clips. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are also suggested.
