소설과 영화에 재현된 영국의 인도 식민 지배 - E. M. 포스터의 소설 『인도로 가는 길』과 동명의 영화를 중심으로 -

이 논문의 목적은 소설 『인도로 가는 길』과 영화 <인도로 가는 길>에 재현된 영국의 인도 식민 지배와 그에 관한 역사적 사실을 살펴보고 나아가 소설과 영화를 역사교육에 활용함에 있어서 문제점을 고찰해 보려는 것이다. 소설 『인도로 가는 길』의 작가 E. M. 포스터는 작품 속에서 영국 사람과 인도 사람은 서로 다르기 때문에 인도 사람이 영국 왕의 신민이 될 수 없으며, 또한 인도와 영국이 하나의 국가가 될 수 없다고 하였다. 이것은 소설의 마무리 부분에서 ‘아니야, 아직은 아니야’라는 표현으로 압축되어 있다. 이는 영국인들의 제국주의 이데올로기, 즉 오리엔탈리즘에서 비롯된 차별과 멸시에 대한 인도 사람들의 항변이라고 할 수 있다. 포스터가 이 소설을 집필하던 시기에 인도인들과 영국인들 사이의 대립은 소설 속에 드러난 것보다 훨씬 더 심했을 것이다. 따라서 두 민족과 국가 사이에 격화되고 있었던 대립 관계를 개인 간의 친교 관계로 미화시켜 다룬 내용은 역사적 사실을 왜곡시키기에 충분하다. 그뿐만 아니라 포스터는 인도를 식민 통치하는 영국인 관리들의 사고와 언행에 대하여 비판을 가하지만, 한편으로는 인도의 문화가 미개하다는 식으로 묘사함으로써 영국인들이 주장하는 제국주의 이데올로기를 합리화한다. 또한, 원작 소설을 토대로 만든 영화 <인도로 가는 길> 역시 감독인 데이비드 린에 의해 각색되면서 역사적 사실이 다르게 표현되어 있다. 즉, 영국 제국은 선하고 문명화된 세계로, 인도는 악하고 야만적인 세계로 재현되어 있어서 영국과 인도가 다르다는 단순한 사실이 편견으로 바뀌어 각인된다. 따라서 영국이 인도를 지배하여 문명화시키는 것이 당연하며 자연스러운 것이라는 이데올로기에 정당성을 부여한다. 말하자면, 소설과 영화가 제국주의의 의도를 뒷받침해 주는 수단으로 사용되고 있다. 이 과정에서 영국 민족의 우월성은 도덕성을 갖추게 되고 그것을 근거로 영국은 식민 지배의 당위성을 획득하게 된다. 이렇듯 소설과 영화는 작가나 제작자의 의도에 따라 독자나 관객들에게 왜곡된 역사적 사실을 전달할 가능성이 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 스토리텔링을 통하여 흥미를 유발하는 소설이나 또 이미지를 통하여 메시지를 전달하는 영화는 역사적 사실을 알려 주는 효과적인 수단이다. 하지만 앞서 언급한 바대로, 소설가나 영화감독은 역사 전문가가 아니므로 소설과 영화에서 다룬 역사적 사실에 대하여 신뢰성을 담보할 수는 없다. 그러므로 역사교육 현장에서는 교육 효과를 위하여 소설이나 영화를 활용할 수는 있으나, 역사적 사실의 확인과 비교를 포함한 효과적 활용방안을 고려해야 할 필요가 있다. 이에 관한 후속 연구가 지속적으로 이어지기를 기대해 본다. The purpose of this paper is to examine the historical facts about British colonial rule in India reproduced in the novel A Passage to India and the movie A Passage to India, and further seek ways to utilize novels and films for history education. E. M. Foster, author of the novel A Passage to India, said in the work that, because British and Indians are different, Indians cannot become subjects of the British king, nor can India and England become one nation. This can be said to be a protest of the Indians against the discrimination and contempt stemming from the British imperialist ideology, that is, Orientalism. At the time Foster was writing this novel, the confrontation between the Indians and the British must have been far more intense than was revealed in the novel. Therefore, the historical fact is highly likely to be distorted by beautifying the confrontational relationship that was intensifying between the two peoples and the state into a reduced personal friendship relationship. Not only that, Foster criticizes the thoughts, words and actions of British officials who colonized India, but on the other hand, it rationalizes the imperial ideology of the British by portraying Indians living in a savage culture. In addition, the film A Passage to India, which was made based on the original novel, was also adapted by director David Lin, and historical facts are expressed differently. In other words, the British Empire is represented as a good and civilized world, and India as an evil and barbaric world. Thus, it creates an ideology that it is natural for Britain to dominate and civilize India. As such, novels and films may deliver distorted historical facts to readers or audiences depending on the intentions of the writer or producer. Nevertheless, novels that arouse interest through storytelling or films that convey messages through images are very effective means to inform historical facts. However, as mentioned earlier, since novelists and film directors are not historical experts, they cannot guarantee the reliability of historical facts covered in novels and films. Therefore, it is necessary to use novels or movies for educational effect in the field of history education, but it is expected that follow-up studies on effective utilization methods including confirmation and comparison of historical facts will continue.
