“For She Knew Nothyng of Her Thoght” : Revisiting Chaucer’s Early Female Characters

This paper examines Geoffrey Chaucer’s feminist imagination, focusing on how his female characters involve in challenging stereotyped gender depictions. Since the 1980s, many scholars have discussed Chaucer from a feminist perspective, suggesting that he was a protofeminist poet whose vivid representation of women was meant to defy patriarchal gender relations held in the fourteenth-century courtly society of England. The scholars, however, focus mostly on Chaucer’s mature work such as The Canterbury Tales, and implicitly claim that women are not a major subject of his early work. While gender issues are central to his poetic imagination, his early dream visions such as The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls, and Troilus and Criseyde did not garner much critical attention in relation to his feminist literary practice. In this respect, this paper traces Chaucer’s development of his early female characters by showing how they change from ghosts to human subjects, from voiceless objects to eloquent narrators.

트랜스퍼시픽 아방가르드 시문학과 존 케이지의 선불교 문화변용*

이 글은 1950년대 비트시인들과 함께 트랜스퍼시픽 아방가르드 시문학의 초석을 놓았으나 상대적으로 크게 주목을 받지 못한 존 케이지(John Cage, 1912-1992)의 선불교 변용의 특징을 구체적으로 분석한다. 케이지는 『4분 33초』를 시작으로 1950년대와 1960년대에 선불교 사상을 내재화한 일련의 실험적인 작품들을 발표했는데, 그 작품들은 형식상 퍼포먼스 음악이지만 그의 시문학을 구성하는 중요한 미학적 원칙을 포함하고 있다. 필자는 케이지가 어떻게 작곡가에서 트랜스퍼시픽 아방가르드 시인으로 변화해 가는지를 추적한다. 이를 위해 먼저 1950년대 작곡가로서 케이지가 선불교를 어떻게 해석하고 미학의 원칙으로 활용했는지 전반적인 특징을 분석한 다음, 그가 불교 수행자들이 명상과 깨달음의 수단으로 사용되는 좌선이나 묵언수행을 자신의 미학과 결합하고 있다는 점을 설명한다. 이어서 선불교에 기초한 그의 미학이 1970년대에 이르러 “메사스틱스”(mesostics)라는 독특한 시문학 형식으로 발전하고 있음을 밝힌다. This paper explores how John Cage (1912—1992) has transformed D.T. Suzuki’s modern Zen theory into his sound-based aesthetic experimentations. Focusing on his work of musical performance and poetic texts, I claim that Cage is a crucial figure in the tradition of what I call “Transpacific Avant-Garde Poetry,” a term that shows how postwar American poets read Buddhism as part of American culture. Influenced by Suzukian Zen in the 1950s, Cage began to compose a series of Zen-inflected poetic texts such as Lecture on Nothing (1959) and worked to promote the idea that Zen lives with everyday life. By composing “mesostics,” a Buddhist mode of writing he invented to reveal the interrelatedness of all things, Cage encourages his audience/readers to perceive the significance of indeterminate meanings and human complexity as mediated through language.

“돌봄의 교수법”을 찾아서:신종코로나바이러스 감염증의 발발과 국내 온라인 영문학교육의 도전

본 논문은 필자가 2020년 하반기부터 2021년 상반기까지 운영한 학부 온라인 영문학 수업의 사례를 공유하고 이를 통해 팬데믹 시대에 국내 온라인 교육이 어떠한 어려움과 과제를 지녔는지 함께 점검해보고자 한다. 구체적으로 부산대학교 영어영문학과 학부 신입생의 전공기초 교과목인 <영미시 입문>과 학부 고학년 학생들의 전공심화 교과목이자 국제어(영어)로 수업을 진행한 <영미 생태문학 읽기>의 사례를 소개한다. 이 글의 목적은 단순히 팬데믹 시대 비대면 온라인 강의의 성공적인 사례를 보여주기 위한 것이 아니다. 오히려 온라인 강의의 설계과정에서 학습자를 배려하는 민주적 소통이나 동료를 배려하는 공동체 의식과 같은 교육의 보편적 가치와 원칙을 실천하는 일이 훨씬 더 어려워졌다는 사실을 확인하고, 이런 한계를 익명으로 소통할 수 있게 해주는 ‘화이트보드’, 교수와 학습자의 실시간 질의응답 활동을 돕는 ‘슬라이도’, 그리고 협업을 통해 완성하는 온라인 마인드맵 프로그램인 ‘마인드마이스터’ 등 디지털 도구를 활용해 극복해보려는 일련의 고민의 과정을 보여주기 위한 것이다. 필자가 수업사례를 통해 강조하고자 하는 것은 크게 ‘상호작용’과 ‘협력학습’이라는 대학 교수법의 보편적 원칙이며, 본문에서는 이 두 가지 요소를 팬데믹 시대의 온라인 교육이라는 문맥 속에서 각각 ‘멀리서 소통하기’와 ‘자기주도적 협력학습’이라는 말로 표현한다. 궁극적으로 본 논문은 국내 온라인 영문학교육이 현재 응급의 단계를 넘어 팬데믹 이후를 대비하기 위해서는 다양한 학생들의 특성과 수요에 맞춘 유연한 수업 진행방식과 함께 디지털 도구를 적극적으로 활용하는 “돌봄의 교수법”을 수업 설계에 적용할 필요가 있다는 점을 역설하고자 한다. Due to the threat of COVID-19, many colleges and universities have recently begun to offer online classes to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Online education in the age of the pandemic can be best described what Charles Hodges calls “Emergency Remote Teaching” (ERT), a term that suggests the paradigm shift of instructional delivery during a crisis. This paper provides a case study that shows the challenges of teaching English literature online in South Korea. The move to ERT requires that instructors take more control of the course design and implementation process, but at the same time, they have varying levels of digital fluency, especially in the use of educational tools for distant learning. By sharing my experience of teaching English literature course with emerging digital learning tools such as Zoom Whiteboard, Slido, and Mindmeister, this paper highlights the importance of online teaching pedagogies in order to promote student interaction in the virtual classroom and manage effective collaborative learning. Ultimately, I suggest a “pedagogy of care” for online literature education in South Korea, emphasizing that instructors should be more attentive to students who have experienced various social, economic, and emotional challenges in this uncertain time.
