조세연 현대문법학회 2004 현대문법연구 Vol.37 No.-
This paper is mainly concerned with problems arising from the extraction phenomena in English. Recently, Bouma, Malouf and Sag (BMS (2001) have proposed the so-called Dependent Realization Constraint to allow a lexical head to be realized as either a local dependent or a nonlocal dependent. Though this constraint has theoretical applications in that it enables us to provide a unified account of extraction dependencies such as subject, complement and adverb extraction, it appears not to have been subjected to full empirical testing. Specifically, there are at least two problems which the unified account by BMS (2001) should solve in order to be seen as a desirable approach to extraction dependencies. Hence, this paper shows which applications can be problematic for this approach and suggests that in those cases, a new constraint-based analysis be used instead.

A Grammar of Contrastive Stripping Construction with Subordinating Conjunctions in English
조세연,김태호,이한규 대한언어학회 2022 언어학 Vol.30 No.4
The paper seeks to provide a syntactic and pragmatic account for the Contrastive Stripping Construction (CSC) in English. The pragmatic account will give a full support for our syntactic analysis. The issue here is on how to generate the CSC with a subordinate conjunction and how to give a right contrastive interpretation. Pointing out the problems of the Movement-Ellipsis analysis, we propose a construction-based analysis of the CSC, which interacts the English CSC rule with the lexical information on the lexemes such as though, except and whereas. It gives us a simple explanation on how to produce the CSCs with a subordinating conjunction and assign an appropriate contrastive interpretation to them.
Fragment answers in Korean: A direct interpretation approach
조세연 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2016 언어연구 Vol.33 No.2
This paper aims to account for idiosyncratic properties of fragment answers (FAs) as answers to wh-questions in Korean, focusing on case identity and generating issues. The main issue on FAs is the existence of the (case-) marker attached to fragment NP(s), which is a crucial factor to analyze how each fragment is linked to each corresponding wh-phrase and how it conveys a desirable sentential meaning. Further, FAs can occur with adjunct phrases with no correlates. To account for the various properties of FAs, we take the Direct Interpretation Approach (DIA) to claim that contra to the Ellipsis Approach (EA), Korean FA constructions can be accounted for by proposing a Korean FA construction with minimum syntactic constraints within the Construction Grammar. In doing so, we assume semantic and pragmatic information on an answerer’s background knowledge including question under discussions (QUD) to get a full sentential reading from FAs. This enables us to explain peculiar properties of the FAs in Korean.
