World Literature and Narrative Experimentation in Sok-yong Hwang`s East Asia Trilogy

        ( Eunju Hwang ) 21세기영어영문학회 2016 영어영문학21 Vol.29 No.4

This article contends that realism is still a valid aesthetic for literature from the periphery of the world literary system through examining Sok-yong Hwang`s East Asia trilogy: The Guest, Shim Chong, and Princess Bari. As a representative writer of Korean realism, Hwang would not give up trying to represent the reality of the voiceless and powerless people and make their voices heard, but he had to develop a more marketable form and content for international readers. His “poetic narrative” is what he has developed as a way to hold the realist spirit in a new form, and the trilogy is its outcome. Despite ghosts` appearance, the use of shamanistic motifs and ceremonies, and the use of multiple perspectives, his fiction always engages with real politics. By discussing the Sin`chon massacre in The Guest, the history of women exploited by capitalism in Shim Chong, and the migrants living on the periphery of the neoliberal world-system in Princess Bari, this article delves into how Hwang`s experiments with realism make the voices from the periphery more accessible to international readers.

Semiparametric estimation for partially linear models with ψ-weak dependent errors

Eunju Hwang,Dong Wan Shin 한국통계학회 2011 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.40 No.4

Semiparametric estimators are developed for a partially linear regression model with ψ-weakly dependent errors. The ψ-weak dependence condition, introduced by Doukhan and Louhich [Doukhan, P., and Louhich, S. (1999). A new weak dependence condition and applications to moment inequalities. Stochastic Processes and their Applications,84, 313–342], unifies weak dependence conditions such as mixing, association, Gaussian sequences and Bernoulli shifts. The class of ψ-weak dependent processes includes many important nonlinear processes such as stationary threshold autoregressive processes and bilinear processes as well as stationary ARMA processes. Asymptotic normalities are established for semiparametric generalized least squares estimators of the parametric component and for estimators of the nonparametric function. Expansions are obtained for the biases and variances of the estimators. Real data set and simulated data set analyses are provided for a model with a threshold autoregressive error process.

The Geography of Non-places in Don DeLillo`s White Noise

        ( Eunju Hwang ) 한국영미문화학회 2015 영미문화 Vol.15 No.2

This essay investigates how the setting plays a crucial role in developing Jack Gladney as a character in White Noise and criticizing the “typical” landscape of American suburb. Marc AugA’s theory about non-places-functional places for transport, transit, commerce, and leisure-sheds a new light on the setting as an exclusively functional space filled with non-places. This article discusses how some places that Jack frequently visits such as the shopping mall, the supermarket, his own automobile, and his home are portrayed as non-places. In these places, Jack cannot have a real connection with his family but lives under an illusion that he does. In non-places, his identity is something transitional; whether it is a consumer or the head of the Hitler Studies, it is all a role-playing, which makes him anxious. In the timeless, sealed-off world of Blacksmith, he believes that he is safe and protected from the Real, but he also sense its invisible presence. After learning about his impending death in the evacuation camp, another form of non-places, he awakens from illusion and ignorance and attempts to transgress the frontier between places and non-places. This essay pays special attention to the last chapter of the novel and discusses how the ending with Wilder’s crossing the expressway, Jack’s watching the sunset on the overpass, and the consumers’ confusion in the supermarket suggest that the frontiers start being recognized and bring disturbances to the non-places in White Noise.

      • Delay Analysis and Optimization of Bandwidth Request under Unicast Polling in IEEE 802.16e over Gilbert-Elliot Error Channel

HWANG, Eunju,KIM, Kyung Jae,ROIJERS, Frank,CHOI, Bong Dae The Institute of Electronics, Information and Comm 2009 IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS - Vol.92 No.12

<P>In the centralized polling mode in IEEE 802.16e, a base station (BS) polls mobile stations (MSs) for bandwidth reservation in one of three polling modes; unicast, multicast, or broadcast pollings. In unicast polling, the BS polls each individual MS to allow to transmit a bandwidth request packet. This paper presents an analytical model for the unicast polling of bandwidth request in IEEE 802.16e networks over Gilbert-Elliot error channel. We derive the probability distribution for the delay of bandwidth requests due to wireless transmission errors and find the loss probability of request packets due to finite retransmission attempts. By using the delay distribution and the loss probability, we optimize the number of polling slots within a frame and the maximum retransmission number while satisfying QoS on the total loss probability which combines two losses: packet loss due to the excess of maximum retransmission and delay outage loss due to the maximum tolerable delay bound. In addition, we obtain the utilization of polling slots, which is defined as the ratio of the number of polling slots used for the MS's successful transmission to the total number of polling slots used by the MS over a long run time. Analysis results are shown to well match with simulation results. Numerical results give examples of the optimal number of polling slots within a frame and the optimal maximum retransmission number depending on delay bounds, the number of MSs, and the channel conditions.</P>

Stationary Bootstrap for U-Statistics under Strong Mixing

Hwang, Eunju,Shin, Dong Wan The Korean Statistical Society 2015 Communications for statistical applications and me Vol.22 No.1

Validity of the stationary bootstrap of Politis and Romano (1994) is proved for U-statistics under strong mixing. Weak and strong consistencies are established for the stationary bootstrap of U-statistics. The theory is applied to a symmetry test which is a U-statistic regarding a kernel density estimator. The theory enables the bootstrap confidence intervals of the means of the U-statistics. A Monte-Carlo experiment for bootstrap confidence intervals confirms the asymptotic theory.

A study on moment inequalities under a weak dependence

Hwang, Eunju,Shin, Dong Wan 한국통계학회 2013 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.42 No.1

We establish Roussas-Ioannides-type inequalities [Roussas, G. G., & Ioannides, D. A. (1987). Moment inequalities for mixing sequences of random variables. Stochastic Analysis and Applications, 5, 61-120] under general ${\psi}$-weak dependence proposed by Doukhan and Louhichi [Doukhan, P., & Louhichi, S. (1999). A new weak dependence condition and applications to moment inequalities. Stochastic Processes and their Applications, 84, 313-342], which unifies weak dependence such as mixing, association, Gaussian sequences and Bernoulli shifts. Simple applications of the inequalities extend many important moment inequalities available in the literature for mixing sequences to those for ${\psi}$-weakly dependent sequences. As an illustration, the established inequalities are applied to extend the result for moment bound of partial sum under strong mixing by Cox and Kim [Cox, D. D., & Kim, T. Y. (1995). Moment bounds for mixing random variables useful in nonparametric function estimation. Stochastic Process and their Applications, 56, 151-158] to the class of ${\psi}$-weakly dependent processes.

        Taoist Self-Development vs. Jungian Wholeness

        Hwang, Eunju(황은주) 한국동서비교문학학회 2009 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.0 No.21

The Natural Transformation Quartet is British science fiction writer J. G. Ballard’s earliest four novels. In extreme natural catastrophes, the main protagonists go into the disaster areas while ordinary people seek safe places to avoid natural disasters. This attitude is regarded as heroic in this essay, rather than a meaningless suicidal act. Many critics including Roger Luckhurst read Ballard’s Natural Transformation Quartet with Jungian theories. In this essay, instead of the Jungian double, Taoism is applied to Ballard’s novels in the sense that the characters have more than one double and their journey to discover the true self does not end. Ballard’s heroes find their true self by submitting themselves to the natural force, rather than facing or avoiding it. In Jungian terms, there is a psychic goal to attain, to become one with one’s own shadow, however, in Taoism, the process of self-development is permanently ongoing. In terms of the endless process of self-development in nature, Ballard’s four novels are read in the Taoist frame. This essay interprets Ballard’s Natural Transformation Quartet as affirmative, reading them as psychic Bildungsromans not as disaster stories.

Random central limit theorems for linear processes with weakly dependent innovations

Hwang, Eunju,Shin, Dong Wan 한국통계학회 2012 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.41 No.3

Random central limit theorems (CLTs) are established for a linear process driven by a strictly stationary ${\psi}$-weakly dependent process as well as for the ${\psi}$-weakly dependent process itself, whose dependence structure was introduced by Doukhan and Louhichi [Doukhan, P., & Louhichi, S. (1999). A new weak dependence condition and applications to moment inequalities. Stochastic Processes and their Applications, 30 84, 313-342] to generalize mixings and other dependence. Random CLTs are established for partial sums and sample autocovariances of the ${\psi}$-weakly dependent process and the linear process under absolute summability.
