THE SIZE RESTRICTION IN PHONOLOGICAL PHRASING AND ITS SIMPLIFIED ALGORITHM

        김선회 사단법인 한국언어학회 2002 언어학 Vol.0 No.33

This paper deals with the case where phonological phrases are formed by the interaction between the syntax-dependent process and the syntax-free process. In this case, the syntax-dependency in phonological phrasing is limited. This is the case in North Kyungsang (NK) Korean, where the phonological phrase refers to a domain for the assignment of a single high tone. There are two noticeable phenomena of phonological phrasing in NK Korean. One phenomenon is that there is no large phonological phrase consisting of more than three phonological words. The other is that compounds are entirely parallel to syntactic phrases in phonological phrasing. In this paper, it is shown that these two phenomena are a result of the interaction between the syntax-dependent process, which relies on branching structure, and the syntax-free process, whereby the size of phonological phrase is restricted. It is also proposed that this interaction is a phrase-level type of binary grouping process. This proposal is supported by both a “serial process”-based analysis and a “parallel process”-based analysis.

        초점과 통사-음운 접합면

        임창국(Yim, Changguk) 현대문법학회 2011 현대문법연구 Vol.63 No.-

From a theoretical perspective, linguistic phenomena are explained in terms of levels of representations such as phonology, syntax, pragmatics, and the like. To better understand the nature of the language faculty, however, it is significant to explore the various interfaces between levels of representations in which one module reflects the other. In this article, it will be examined that phonological phrasing reflects syntactic cycle and focus affects phonological phrasing in Korean. Phonological rephrasing triggered by focus will be accounted for under the Multiple Spell-Out model (Uriagereka 1999, Chomksy 2000, 2001; Dobashi 2003, 2006).

On the Syntactic Grounding of the Prosodic Interpretation of Wh-questions

        Yeun-Jin Jung 한국생성문법학회 2014 생성문법연구 Vol.24 No.1

The most widely held view on the syntax-phonology interface is built on the assumption that phonological processes do not refer to syntactic constituency directly, but rather to the derived prosodic structure. Revising this standard prosodic hierarchy theory, Selkirk (2009) puts forward a new universal Match theory, focusing on Japanese wh-questions. In particular, Selkirk maintains that the syntax-phonology interface universally calls for a clause to match up with the intonational phrase. Jung (2010, 2012, 2013), on the other hand, advocates a direct feature reference analysis, based on Busan Korean wh-questions, according to which phonology interprets the syntactically-licensed wh-agreement features directly with its own constraints on the formation of wh-prosody. The present paper tries to show that the prosodic domains of wh-questions cannot be predicted by Selkirk's Match theory either in Japanese or in Korean due to the complexity and variability of wh-prosodic patterns, and that the precise nature of wh-prosody can be best explained by an interplay between syntax and phonology under the direct feature reference analysis.

On the Nature of Wh-Prosody and Its Syntactic Dependency

        정연진 한국언어학회 2012 언어 Vol.37 No.2

In the standard minimalist tradition, the overt/covert distinction for wh-movement has been accounted for in terms of formal features such as “strong” or “weak” wh-features, or more recently the presence or absence of an EPP feature in C. Richards (2010), on the other hand, has recently proposed from quite an opposite direction that the syntactic parameter for wh-movement has directly to do with the wh-specific phonological effects, that is, prosodic effects feed syntactic wh-movement. In this paper I will provide evidence that for wh-interpretation, syntax feeds phonology, rather than vice versa, hence supporting the standard feature-based account of wh-movement. In so doing, it will be also argued that some agreement-related syntactic features may directly influence phonology, hence opening up the possibility of a direct reference approach to the syntax-phonology interface.

      • Phonetic Approach or Phonological Approach : Syntax-prosody Interface in Seoul Korean

        Utsugi, Akira 한국음성과학회 2004 음성과학 Vol.11 No.4

There are two different approaches in studying mapping between syntactic structure and prosody, the 'phonetic approach' and the 'phonological approach'. An experiment to examine which approach is more valid was conducted. In the experiment. syntactically ambiguous Seoul Korean sentences in each of which a noun immediately after an adjective starts with either an H-segment (a segment which triggers the AP-initial H tone) or an L-segment (a segment other than H-segments) were recorded by 3 Seoul Korean speakers. The F0 values in the syllables containing the consonants in question were then measured. The results show that interaction between the segment type and the branching structure is statistically significant. which suggests that it is difficult to use the phonetic approach to generalize the relationship between syntax and prosody. Thus, it is concluded that the phonological approach is more valid.

        Syntax-Phonology Interface of Wh-questions

        정연진(Yeun-Jin Jung) 한국생성문법학회 2010 생성문법연구 Vol.20 No.1

Since the advance of the Minimalist Program, the prosody of wh-questions has drawn much attention from both syntacticians and phonologists as they bear special significance for the illumination of the syntax-phonology interface. The prosodic properties of wh-questions in Busan Korean are particularly interesting in that they reflect syntactic information quite faithfully but with differentiating devices of intonation contour. Based on the experimental investigation of the correlation of wh-scope and prosody in Busan Korean, I will show what kind of syntactic information has direct relevance for the prosodic system, how it affects parametric differences among dialects, and how the nature of the correlation of wh-scope and prosody can be captured in the current minimalist theory.

        이영태 한국이슬람학회 2011 한국이슬람학회논총 Vol.21 No.1

This article aims to show a model to use it for the Arabic learners. This is composed of 4 chapters. The first is the introduction to this research. In this chapter there are aims of this research, the range, and how to study in this article. And chapter two is concentrating in the books for Arabic Grammar which Arabic learners are using in Hankook University of Foreign Studies, and it classifies the contents of the books according to phonology, morphology and syntax. And chapter three shows the items by the proper order. And the conclusion includes the results of this research and suggests next research theme.

        미국의 중국언어학 연구 동향

이옥주 한국중국어문학회 2007 中國文學 Vol.53 No.-

This paper introduces major academic programs for Chinese linguistics and their researchers in the U.S. It also discusses some of the most productively researched areas and the current research trends in Chinese linguistics in the U.S. by examining the papers recently presented at NACCL and those published in JCL and JC: LTA. It finds that syntax has been the most extensively researched area and that interdisciplinary researches are actively conducted between syntax/semantics and pedagogy. A considerable amount of research has also been carried out in such areas as phonology, dialectology, and historical linguistics. While a group of young linguists recently emerged in computational linguistics and corpus linguistics, more research still needs to done in various subfields of linguistics such as pragmatics, sociolinguistics, phonetics, and psycholinguistics. It is also found that the diverse academic and ethnic backgrounds of researchers might help facilitate interactions between Chinese linguists and linguists studying other languages. It is hoped that Chinese linguists in Korea play an important role in developing new methodologies for Chinese linguistics and providing a more fruitful source of data from the Chinese language for linguistic typological comparisons.
