        Studies of Organic Forage Production System for Animal Production in Korea

        Organic forage production system is one of the most important aspects in organic livestock production. Animals in the organic farming system are also essential for manure to be used for organic forage production. Both organic forage and animals are essential to maintain the cycle of organic agriculture system. In this paper we introduce the organic forage production system in Korea. Summer and winter crops are getting popular in Korea because of their high forage yield and cultivation in double cropping systems. Common cropping system for forage production in Korea is the double cropping system with legume and grass mixture. Forage sorghum and sudangrass are the most popular ones of annual summer forage corps because of their high production with low cost in the double cropping systems. In the mixture of forage crops, inter cropping is more suitable in the corn and sorghum cropping system because of high lodging resistance and forage yield, and low weed population. Forage sorghum and sudangrass are difficult to preserve as direct-cut silage due to the fact that its high moisture content causes excessive fermentation during ensiling. Corn grain addition to sorghum silage could be recommended as the most effective treatment for increasing quality and reducing production cost. It is recommended that corn grain could be added up to 10% of total amount of silage. And agriculture by-products also can be added at the time of ensiling to minimize losses of effluent and have the additional advantage of increasing quality. Agriculture by-products as silage supplements increased DM content and quality, and decreased the production cost of sorghum silage. Field pre-wilting treatment of forage crops also increased DM content and quality of the silage. Wilting sorghum${\times}$sudangrass hybrid before ensiling was the effective method for reducing effluent and increasing pH and forage quality more than direct cut silage. Optimum prewilting period of sudangrass silage was 1 or 2 days. In organic forage, the most important factor is the enhancement of organic forage sufficiency in relation to the environmental-friendly and organic livestock. Consequently, there are many possibilities for animal production and organic forage production in Korea. No forages no cattle concept should be emphasized in organic farming system.

        답리작 조사료 생산의 경제성 분석

        This study analyzes the forage production situations of the forage production complexes using idle land cropping after rice harvest to identify economic feasibility and magnification measures of the forage production. Major research results can be summarized as follows: When compared with importing forage price, production cost of forage cropping after rice harvest provides 41~45% economic benefits. Besides income increase to farmers, the results indicate that the forage cropping after rice harvest has much potential to increase land and machinery use efficiency. Also, to expand the roughage production acreage and to save production cost, it is recommended that land should be selected in the places with well planning and drainage and forage production complex should be composed of 2~6 farmers and 20~60 ha of farm size to improve machinery use efficiency.

        Effects of Natural Grass Forage to Concentrate Ratios and Feeding Principles on Milk Production and Performance of Crossbred Lactating Cows

        Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of forage:concentrate ratios and feeding principles on milk yield, milk composition, body weight change, postpartum oestrus and feed cost. A total of 36 crossbred F1 cows (Holstein Friesian${\times}$Local Yellow) in the 8th week of lactation were used. In each experiment, animals were divided into three groups using a randomized block design according to the milk yield of the previous eight weeks. Cows were fed 30, 50 and 70% concentrate in the diet based on DM. In experiment 1 (Fc), cows were given the same amount of DM with constant ratios of forage and concentrate within treatments. In experiment 2 (Fa), cows were given the same constant amounts of concentrate as in experiment 1 and ad libitum forage. The forage consisted of a natural grass mixture based on 5 species of grasses with high nutritive values. There was no difference in total DM intake between treatments within experiments. However, cows fed forage ad libitum had higher DM intakes compared to cows fed constant forage (1.6, 4.5 and 9.5% for cows fed 70, 50 and 30% forage, respectively). Daily milk yield of cows fed forage ad libitum was higher than that of cows fed constant forage:concentrate ratio. Within experiment, milk yield was highest for cows fed 30% DM forage, followed by cows fed 50% and then cows fed 70% forage (11.17, 10.98 and 10.71 for the 30Fc, 50Fc and 70Fc cows; 11.73, 11.16 and 10.81 kg for the 30Fa, 50Fa and 70Fa cows, respectively). Decreased forage ratio in the diets resulted in decreased milk fat content and tended to increase milk protein. Increased concentrate ratio in the diet and feeding forage ad libitum increased body weight gain. The effect of forage:concentrate ratio on postpartum oestrus was not significant. The feed cost per kg milk produced was lowest for the cows fed 70% forage. It is concluded that increased ratio of concentrate resulted in increased body weight gain, milk yield, milk protein, and decreased milk fat. Feeding forage ad libitum increased feed intake, milk yield and body weight gain. The ratio of 50% forage is more suitable for milk production and animal condition, but in terms of feed cost and under the conditions of small dairy farmers, the 70% ad libitum forage feeding is recommended.

        우리나라 한우의 경쟁력 제고를 위한 조사료 자급률 확보 방안

        In order to increase forage production in Korea, it`s required suitable method at each sectional region. Youngnam sectional region request efficiently using the paddy to product rice straw on their area and Joongbu sectional region request more high effect to use it. And Kangwon sectional region had better to use their a dry field to product more forage compared with another sectional regions like as Youngnam and Joongbu. In particular, Korean officer wanr to have a plan to reduce some forage which come from overseas because it will be increase and dangerous on their price. But It is not easy to success stopping to import unless increase paddy and dry field to product for forage. These alternative forage for rice production for feed and rice straw production for forage need to be considered. To solve excess production of rice and increase income of farmers, it is a good plan to trans to product forage than rice. Also in this case, it can trans to paddy to product rice anytime if these condition are changed when rice may lack at that time. And one more thing to breed cattle heads are suitable to product forage in their section region under condition.

        Assessment of weather events impacts on forage production trend of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid

        This study aimed to assess the impact of weather events on the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor L.) cultivar production trend in the central inland region of Korea during the monsoon season, using time series analysis. The sorghum-sudangrass production data collected between 1988 and 2013 were compiled along with the production year’s weather data. The growing degree days (GDD), accumulated rainfall, and sunshine duration were used to assess their impacts on forage production (kg/ha) trend. Conversely, GDD and accumulated rainfall had positive and negative effects on the trend of forage production, respectively. Meanwhile, weather events such as heavy rainfall and typhoon were also collected based on weather warnings as weather events in the Korean monsoon season. The impact of weather events did not affect forage production, even with the increasing frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall. Therefore, the trend of forage production for the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was forecasted to slightly increase until 2045. The predicted forage production in 2045 will be 14,926 ± 6,657 kg/ha. It is likely that the damage by heavy rainfall and typhoons can be reduced through more frequent harvest against short-term single damage and a deeper extension of the root system against soil erosion and lodging. Therefore, in an environment that is rapidly changing due to climate change and extreme/abnormal weather, the cultivation of the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid would be advantageous in securing stable and robust forage production. Through this study, we propose the cultivation of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid as one of the alternative summer forage options to achieve stable forage production during the dynamically changing monsoon, in spite of rather lower nutrient value than that of maize (Zea mays L.).

        기후와 주요 사료작물 생산량의 관계 - 대관령과 수원을 사례로 -

        This paper aims to investigate the relationship between climates and forage crop productivity. The productivity of forage crop and climate data (air temperature, precipitation, duration of sunshine) in Daegwallyeong and Suwon sites were used. The productivity of forage crop tends to increase in Daegwallyeong and Suwon sites. Also, the air temperature tends to rise and the days over 25? of daily mean temperature that occur summer depression tends to increase. The days of 2000s were increased 8.5 days more than 1980s in Suwon. Then, to rise temperature, it needs to prepare to protect summer depression. The precipitation tends to increase in two sites, but the relationship between precipitation and the productivity of forage crop were not significant.

        국내 개발 이탈리안 라이그라스와 청보리 주요 품종의 생산성과 사료가치 비교

        본 연구는 국내 개발 이탈리안 라이그라스(IRG)와 청보리 품종의 생산성과 사료가치를 비교분석하여 영농현장에 필요한 기술정보를 제공하고자 국립축산과학원 수원 시험포장에서 2009년 9월부터 ‘10년 6월까지 수행하였다. 처리내용은 IRG 2품종(조생종 Kowinearly, 중생종 Kowinmaster), 청보리 5품종(영양, 우호, 유연, 다미, 유호) 및 혼파구(Kowinearly+유연, Kowinmaster+유연) 등 9처리였다. IRG의 출수기는 Kowin early 5월 14 일, Kowinmaster 5월 18일이었다. 5월 22일 조사한 청보리의 숙기는 영양과 우호는 유숙후기, 다미는 호숙초기, 유연과 유호는 호숙초·중기로 품종간 약간의 차이가 있었다. IRG에서 도복이 다소 있었으나 혼파구에서는 관찰되지 않았고, 혼파구에서 IRG의 초장은 117~118cm로 IRG나 청보리 단파구에 비해 길었다. 수확 시 건물률은 20.7~25.4%였으며, 혼파구에서 시기별로 조사한 IRG의 식생비율은 평균 43.1%였다. 청보리의 이삭 비율은 성숙이 진행될수록 높아지는 경향으로 유숙후기, 호숙기, 황숙기, 완숙기에서 각각 35.7%, 44.1%, 54.8%, 57.2%였으며, 품종별로는 영양과 우호에서 다소 높은 경향이었다. 조단백질 함량은 IRG에서 9.0~10.0%로 높은 경향이었으며 청보리는 7.0~8.5%, 혼파구는 7.3~9.1%였고, NDF와 ADF 함량은 청보리구에서 낮은 경향이었다. 건물 소화율은 Kowinearly 64.4%, Kowinmaster 64.1%, Kowinmaster+유연 혼파구는 64.5%였으며, 청보리는 60.2(유호)~66.4%(우호) 범위로 우호에서 높은 경향이었다. 건물수량, 조단백질 수량, 가소화 건물수량은 Kowinmaster+유연 혼파구에서 ha당 각각 11,508kg, 1,046kg, 7,422kg으로 가장 많았으며(P<0.05), IRG와 청보리 품종별 생산성 차이는 크지 않아 지역 특성과 재배 목적에 맞는 초종 및 품종선택과 함께 IRG(Kowinmaster)+청보리 혼파이용이 권장되었다. This study was carried out to determine the forage production and quality of Italian ryegrass (IRG) and forage barley developed by Korea in Suwon, 2009~'10. The nine treatments were two IRG varieties(Kowinearly with early maturity and Kowinmaster with medium maturity), five barley varieties (Youngyang, Wooho, Yuyeon, Dami and Youho), and two mixtures (Kowinearly+Yuyeon and Kowinmaster+Yuyeon). The heading dates of Kowinearly and Kowinmaster were 14 May and 18 May, respectively. The growth stage of barley investigated at 22 May were late milk in Youngyang and Wooho, early dough in Dami and early to medium dough in Yuyeon and Youho. Plant length of IRG in IRG+barley mixtures was 117~118cm, which was longer than those of IRG monoculture of 98~101cm, and no lodging was found in mixtures. The dry matter (DM) percentage at harvest was 20.7~25.4% in all treatments. The botanical composition of IRG in mixtures was 43.1%. The percentage of spike per barley plant was become high according to progressed maturity, as a 35.7%, 44.1%, 54.8% and 57.2% in late milk, dough, yellowish and full ripeness stage, respectively, and the spike percentages of Youngyang and Wooho were tends to high. The crude protein (CP) content of IRG as 9.0~10.0% was higher than that of barley (7.0~8.5%), and the contents of NDF and ADF of barley were lower than those of IRG, and in vitro DM digestibility were 64.4% in Kowinearly, 64.1% in Kowinmaster, 64.5% in mixture, and 60.2%(Youho) to 66.4%(Wooho) in barley. The yields of DM, CP and in vitro digestible DM were high in Kowinmaster+barley mixture as a 11,508kg, 1,046kg and 7,422kg per ha, respectively(p<0.05). However, no significant differences in forage yield were observed among cultivar of IRG, and barley, although Wooho was tends to high in digestibility and forage yield among five barley varieties. In conclusion, the mixture cultivation of IRG Kowinmaster+forage barley was recommended, because of preventing of IRG lodging, higher plant length of IRG, increasing of forage yield, and stable production. Selection of suitable winter forage species and variety for district, climate environment, and utilization type of farm was also important.

        중부지역에서 검은줄오갈병 발생이 사료용 옥수수 품종의 조사료 생산성에 미치는 영향

        본 시험은 중부지역에서 사료용 옥수수의 검은줄오갈병 발생이 조사료 생산성 에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 2006년부터 2008년까지 충청남도 천안에서 수행되었다. 사료용 옥수수의 공시품종은 국내에서 재배되고 있는 10품종으로 하였고, 재배방법은 4월 하순에 파종하는 1모작 재배와 5월 중하순에 파종하는 2모작 재배로 나누어 재배하였으며, 품종별 검은줄오갈병의 발생률과 수량성을 조사하였다. 우리나라 중부지역에서 사료용 옥수수의 품종별 검은줄오갈병의 발생률은 차이가 있었다(p<0.05). 검은줄오갈병에 강한 품종은 광안옥, P3156, 광평옥 및 P3394 품종이었고 약한 품종은 'NC+7117', '수원19호' 'DK697' 및 'GW6959' 품종이었다. 검은줄오갈병 발생에 따른 사료용 옥수수의 조사료 건물수량은 품종 간에 차이가 있었으며(p<0.05), 검은줄오갈병 발생이 많았던 수원 19호와 GW6959 품종의 건물수량이 검은줄오갈병 발생이 적었던 광평옥과 P3156 품종보다 20% 정도 적었다. 옥수수의 품종별 암이삭 비율은 검은줄오갈병 발생이 많았던 NC+7117 및 GW6959 품종이 약 29%로 가장 낮았고 검은줄오갈병의 발생이 적었던 광평옥, P3394 및 P3156 품종에서는 각각 34.0, 38.7 및 36.4%으로 높은 경향이었다. 따라서 우리나라 중부지역에서 사료용 옥수수를 재배할 때는 검은줄오갈병에 강한 품종을 선택하고 파종시기의 조절이 매우 중요하다 할 것이다. This experiment was carried out to study the effect of rice black-streaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) infection rate on forage productivity of corn varieties in Cheonan of chungcheongnamdo from 2006 to 2008. Forage corn varieties of 10 were cultivated with first cropping(seeding in the last ten days of April) and second cropping(seeding in the last ten days of May) system in field and tested the infection rates of RBSDV and productivity of forage. The Infection rate of RBSDV was significant difference between corn varieties in middle district of Korea. Resistant corn varieties for RBSDV were 'Kwanganok', 'P3156', 'Kwangpeyongok' and 'P3394' but susceptible varieties were 'Suwon19', 'DK697', 'GW6959' and NC+7117. Dry matter(DM) yield of forage corn according with infection rates of RBSDV in field was significant difference between varieties(p<0.05). DM yield of susceptible varieties, 'Suwon 19', 'DK697' and 'GW6959' was lower about 20% than that of resistant varieties, 'Kwangpeyongok' and 'P3156'. For increasing the productivity of forage corn, recommend of resistant varieties for RBSDV and control of seeding time are very important in middle district of Korea.
