        Relationship between hand hygiene beliefs and nail hygiene behaviors among dental workers in South Korea

        Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate nail hygiene behaviors and to identify the relationship between hand hygiene beliefs and nail hygiene behaviors among dental hygienists, dental’s aide and dental coordinator in South Korea. Methods: The subjects were 291 dental workers including dental hygienists, dental assistant and dental coordinator working full-time at dental clinics, dental hospitals, general dental hospitals and dental university hospitals in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. The questionnaire consisted of a total 35 items, including 4 items on general characteristics, 25 items on hand hygiene, 2 items on “nail art” experience, and 4 items on nail hygiene behaviors. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis, where α<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The scores of behavioral beliefs, normative beliefs, control beliefs and nail hygiene behaviors were 5.15±0.58, 5.26±0.81, 3.69±0.96 and 5.03±0.98, respectively. Statistically significant relationships were detected in terms of participants’ clinical experiences with respect to behavioral and normative beliefs (p<0.05 for all three belief categories). Participants working in general dental hospitals and dental university hospitals demonstrated the highest scores for behavioral, normative and control beliefs (p<0.05). Participants working in dental clinics reported the highest “nail art” experience rates in the last two years (45.5%) and at the time of the survey (15.7%; p<0.05). Nail hygiene behaviors were more likely to be observed in individuals with stronger behavioral and stronger normative beliefs (p<0.05). Conclusions: More specific infection control guidelines for “nail art” among dental workers should be established and promoted, so that both patients and dental workers can interact in a safe environment.

        한국 4년제 치위생학과의 교육과정

        Education should consider the social consensus that changes according to the times and the social environment, and it is also necessary to consider the technically useful subjects. We collected and reported the 4-year course curriculum of dental hygiene when Korean dental hygiene education has continued over 50 years. Each 4-year course curriculum was collected by searching each university website, or requested by email. The curriculum of 23 among 27 schools was collected. According to the classification of dental hygiene in the dental hygienist national examination classification or the Korean society of dental hygiene science, the subjects of the course were divided into clinical dental hygiene, clinical dental treatment support, basic dental hygiene, social and educational dental hygiene, and collected 23 curriculum courses. The average major curriculum was 104.9 credits and the average number of subjects in major courses was 34.3. The average subjects' number of clinical dental hygienic courses was 33.9 (37.5% of the total major credits), clinical dental treatment support was 30.6 (30.2% of the total major credits), basic dental hygiene was 21.8 (20.8% of the total major credits), and social and educational dental hygiene courses was 13.6 (13.0% of total major credits). Integrated subjects' name in clinical dental hygiene was used in all schools of the survey, such as clinical dental hygiene education (and practice), comprehensive dental hygiene education, and integrated dental hygiene. There were 13 schools (56.5%) that use the integrated name in clinical dental treatment support, such as clinical dentistry. There were 14 schools (60.9%) to open dental clinic management, and 22 schools (95.7%) to open national health insurance claims. The basic dental hygiene curriculum maintained the title of each subject and social and educational dental hygiene education was established in most schools, such as community dental health, oral health statistics, and oral health education. Other subjects were English conversation in dental clinic (8 schools) education, clinical dental treatment support, basic science in dental hygiene, social and educational dental hygiene. We knew the clinical dental hygiene and clinical dental treatment support were changing into the integrated subjects, and most schools run dental hygiene research.

        치위생과정 기반의 임상치위생 증례보고서 분석

        Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyse case reports performed through a dental hygiene process and provide basic data on clinical education of dental hygiene. Methods: 154 case reports which collected for six years were analysed. This study applied dental hygiene process model in dental hygiene diagnosis. Dental hygiene diagnosis was more cleared by dental a hygiene process model. Data analysis was performed by the Frequency statistics using SPSS 12.0 for Windows. Results: 1. The clients are mainly comprised 20`s university student(91.9%). 2. In assessment phase, clients finished 100% test of subjective data. 3. When applied a dental hygiene process model in dental hygiene diagnosis, students have identified 23 type of dental hygiene problem and analysed dental hygiene problem frequently used as bleeding of gingiva, calculus and deposit of dental plaque. 4. In case of plan of dental hygiene intervention, Fluoride application showed the most high level(98.1%) in clinical intervention. 5. Results of intervention showed that performance rate(98.7%) of scaling is the most high level. Conclusions: Dental hygiene process model is more useful than other diagnostic models in clinical practice based on dental hygiene process. (J Korean Soc Dent Hygiene 2011;11(5):749-758)

        노인치위생학 교육과정 개선에 대한 요구도 분석

        Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene and provide basic data for developing standard curricula for geriatric hygiene. Methods: To investigate the educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene, 212 students from dental hygiene departments and 205 dental hygienists engaged in clinical practice were enrolled. Results: Among the educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene, Geriatric oral health issues category was the highest with 4.06 points for students and 4.05 points for dental hygienists. Students who completed a geriatric dental hygiene course had higher scores for the following sub-domains compared to those who did not: need for geriatric dental hygiene-related theoretical education (p=0.002), needs for practice education with elderly people (p=0.001), and confidence in performing oral healthcare for elderly people after graduation (p< 0.001). Meanwhile, clinical dental hygienists who not completed geriatric-related courses had higher scores for, need for geriatric dental hygiene-related theoretical education, need for practice education with elderly people, and confidence in performing oral healthcare for elderly people. but, there was no significant difference (p >0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that students and dental hygienists had high educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene. In particular, there was a high demand for education related to Geriatric oral health issues as well as Geriatric dental hygiene care and skills

        일부 치위생과 신입생의 전공선택과 직업의식에 관한 조사연구

        Background: The selection of an occupation is typically based on individuals' personalities and the characteristics of occupations, which significantly affect occupational consciousness. The present study aimed to enhance the occupational achievement level of and provide fundamental data for student counseling in order to develop competitive professional workers by understanding the occupational consciousness of freshmen and motivating them as dental hygienists with career development plans, as freshmen majoring in dental hygiene eventually play a significant role in the field of dentistry as dental hygienists. Methods: The surveys were distributed to 160 freshmen in the dental hygiene department and were subsequently collected. The data from 142 surveys were used for analysis, as 18 surveys were excluded due to insincere responses. The survey contents included questions related to major selection and satisfaction, including motives for selecting a dental hygiene major, prior knowledge on a dental hygiene major and a career as a dental hygienist, satisfaction level of the major, and reasons for dissatisfaction in cases if applicable, as well as questions related to occupational consciousness, including career prospects for dental hygienists, opinions on the occupation, and conditions of job selection. Results: High employment rate with good salary level ranked highest (43.7%) among motives to apply the dental hygiene major, followed by the desire to be a professional worker (21.1%) and recommendation by acquaintances. Of those who responded, 50.7% indicated a normal level of satisfaction with the major, and 69.9% responded that they had prior knowledge regarding the dental hygiene major and/or field of dental hygiene. These results may be due to youth unemployment and the occurrence of job preparation immediately after students enter university, which is a result of the difficulty in job seeking. In terms of career prospects, 48.6% of students responded with "growing a little bit," followed by "growing a lot" (28.9%), "no difference from now" (21.1%), and "other" (1.4%). Regarding opinions on the occupation, 65.5% responded that occupation was an tool with which to make and income or a living, 23.2% responded that occupation was for dreams and self-realization, and 11.3% responded that occupation was for success in life and maintaining social status. Regarding the conditions of job selection, the responses included that the workplace had good working conditions (39.4%), good interpersonal relationships (21.8%), and a higher salary (18.3%). This may reflect the change in work ethics among university students, according to the trend of the times. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, we found that educational guidance to enhance the level of satisfaction with the major, and career guidance to understand and apply the clear vision and long-term job security are necessary.

        대전 일부 치위생학과와 간호학과 재학생 및 졸업생의 전공과 업무 만족도 비교

        Although dental hygiene has haven a special domain of knowledge and its own business territory, people have misunderstandings about dental hygienists as nurses or nirses` aides in Korea. Inadequate knowledge could make negative results for university applicants to choose department of dental hygiene. This study was aimed to compare major and job satisfaction of students and graduates in dental hygiene and nursing for objective comparison and suggestion for dental hygiene. The subjects were 98 dental hygiene students, 113 nursing students, 53 dental hygienists, and 53 nurses by convenience sampling in Daejeon. The questionnaire consisted of satisfaction of college life, social identity, career path and job. ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc analysis was used with SPSS 20.0 program. Although dental hygiene students scored lower than nursing students in satisfaction of college life, social identity, career path and job, dental hygienists, nurse and dental hygiene students didn`t have different satisfaction of job. Dental hygienists scored the lowest in relation with clinical work and major curriculum, and sexual discrimination. Nurses scored the lowest in working condition and salary. Dental hygienists and dental hygiene students had lower scores in information and advice of career path, entrance to graduate school, stable work, family`s pride of my major, social position and so on. We suggested the community of dental hygiene should try to promote dental hygienists to public, the community of dentists should give the stable working condition, and the department of dental hygiene should improve the major curriculum to relate with clinical work.

        국내 노인치위생학 교육과정 현황분석

        Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the current status and educational contents of the geriatric-related curriculum in dental hygiene departments at colleges across the country. Methods: To analyze the current status of geriatric curriculum, it was investigated by searching the websites of colleges across the country where dental hygiene (curriculum) department was available. Furthermore, a literature review of domestic and foreign textbooks related to geriatric dental hygiene was conducted to analyze the contents of geriatric dental hygiene curriculum. Results: Among colleges that offer dental hygiene (curriculum) department, 8 four-year and 12 three-year colleges (24.4%) offered geriatric dental hygiene courses. A comparison of the contents of the textbooks titled “Geriatric dental hygiene” published by Goonja, Daehan Narae, and Komoonsa showed that basic contents such as the characteristics, health problems, and oral health problems of elderly -people were described in the same context. However, there was a difference in the volume and importance of the concerned contents also. Conclusions: Universities and related organizations which offer dental hygiene curriculum should continue to conduct studies for the development of geriatric hygiene curricula. Moreover, heightened efforts are needed to ensure that geriatric dental hygiene education is more systematically offered.

        치과종사자의 손 위생 신념 및 손 위생 활동과 손 위생 수행률의 관련성

        Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the correlation between belief in hand hygiene, activities and related hand hygiene performance rates among dental staff. Methods: This study was based on the evaluation of 329 dental practitioners, including dental hygienists who work at dental clinics, dental hospitals, general and university dental hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do Province, and Incheon. The questionnaire consisted of a total of 46 questions, including 7 questions on general characteristics, and 25 questions on hand hygiene beliefs, and 5 questions on hand hygiene activities, and 9 questions on hand hygiene practices. This study used 291 subjects for the final analysis, excluding subjects who had provided incomplete or inappropriate responses to the questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, ANOVA, x<sup>2</sup> test, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis, where p-values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Longer clinical career was associated with a significant increase in behavior and norm beliefs, but no sequential difference in control beliefs. The hand hygiene performance was higher in staff at larger hospitals after contact with pollutants and contaminated environments. Higher age was associated with a significant increase in hand hygiene performance rates, but profession was not statistically significant in the performance rate of hand hygiene. The hand hygiene performance rate was ranked higher among those with average work hours per week of greater than 8 hours followed by those who worked fewer than 8 hours. Fewer work hours per week, a stronger belief in hand hygiene, less frequent exposure to contaminated environments, and a greater number of hand hygiene performance had a positive effect on higher hand hygiene performance rates. Conclusions: In order to increase the hand hygiene performance rate of dental practitioners, it is considered that required time for hand washing should be ensured sufficiently. Proper usage of hand sanitizers should also be promoted efficiently.

        PBL기반의 치과의료커뮤니케이션 교육과정을 통한 일부 치위생학과 학생들의 치위생 의사소통 역량수준 평가에 대한 사례연구

        Background: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate changes in the communication capabilities of dental hygiene students after completing a problem based learning (PBL) dental communication curriculum. With this information, we intend to gather the basic data necessary to stress the need for and value of an education in communication regarding dental hygiene. Methods: PBL-based education was provided to a total of 49 third-year dental hygiene students who took the dental communication class taught by the Department of Dental Hygiene at S University during the 2<sup>nd</sup> semester of 2020. The relevant self-evaluation was modified, based on the aim of the present study, to refer to three basic key competencies related to the communication capabilities of dental hygienists. An assessment of dental communication competency was conducted by analyzing the changes in self-evaluations before and after completing the course, for each question, using a paired t-test. The statistical significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: Analysis of core competencies before and after PBL-based dental communication education indicated that all competencies were significantly improved after education (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Dental hygiene students' dental communication skills increased significantly after completing PBL-based dental communication education. Therefore, a PBL-based dental communication curriculum is effective in improving dental communication skills for dental hygiene students.

        Research Trend Analysis of Research Published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene Science from 2011 to 2020

        Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze research trends in articles published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene Science over the past decade. Methods: From 2011 to 2020, 653 studies were reviewed using a keyword analysis. Contents such as academic classification, research type, research method, research topic, data collection method, data analysis method, and financial support were analyzed. Results: Analysis by school type showed 34.2% of clinical dental hygiene studies, 23.3% of educational dental hygiene studies, 22.8% of basic dental hygiene studies, 10.0% of other field studies, and 9.8% of social dental hygiene studies. By type of study, quantitative studies were the most common at 69.5%. Regarding data collection methods, 45.8% of the studies that used surveys were the most common. The subjects of the study were 20.1% experimental studies, 15.6% general adults, and 15.0% dental hygienists. Regarding the data analysis method, 49.3% of the studies that conducted frequency analysis were the most common. The total number of keywords was 2,390, with 107 (4.48%) being ‘dental hygienists.’ Next, oral health was the most common with 67 (2.80%) articles, followed by 31 for the elderly (1.30%), 25 for dental hygiene students (1.05%), and 24 for stress (1.00%). Conclusion: For academic development of dental hygiene, it is necessary to explore the diversity of academic topics based on the results of this study. It is necessary to find a way to spread the research results so that the published research can be used for the academic development of dental hygiene.
