죽음을 통한 이야기의 발견 : 이청준 초기 소설을 중심으로

이 글은 이청준 초기 소설에 나타난 죽음의 양상을 하고 있음을 밝히고, 이를 이야기하는 방식이 이청준 소설 의식과 연관성이 있음을 규명하고자 했다. 「줄광대」는 타인의 죽음에 함께 함으로써 그 삶 또한 공유할 수 있음을 보여준다. 그러나 이 이야기를 취재하는 ‘나’는 그 공유 방식을 받아들이지 못한다. ‘나’의 고민과 주저함은 죽음에 관한 이야기를 유보 상태로 남겨둔다. ‘나’는 그 이야기를 버리지도, 발화하지도 못하지만, 그에 대해 많은 생각이 필요함을 어렴풋이 인지하게 된다. 한편, 「바닷가 사람들」은 죽음을 어떻게 이해하고 이야기할 것인가에 대한 문제를 해결한 작품이다. 어린 서술자 ‘나’는 타인의 죽음을 확인할 수 없지만, 그것을 사실로 인정한다. ‘나’에게 중요한 것은 그들의 죽음이 진실이냐 거짓말이냐의 차원을 벗어나 있는 것이다. ‘나’는 아버지와 형의 죽음을 은유하는 배에서 그들의 행동을 흉내냄을 통해서 그 죽음에 직면하고, 그 순간 타자를 위한 이야기 욕망을 자각한다. 나아가 「매잡이」는 「바닷가 사람들」의 어린 화자가 품은 이야기 욕망을 조금 더 구체화한다. ‘나’는 매잡이의 죽음에 함께 하는 민 형의 소설을 계기로 새로운 소설을 쓴다. 민 형은 매잡이의 운명을 예견하고 그의 죽음에 함께하는 것에 그쳤다면, ‘나’는 새로운 소설을 쓰며 그 죽음을 해명한다. 민 형의 죽음이 실패가 될 수밖에 없는 사회에 대한 진단과, 그리고 과거 이야기 속에서 배제되었던 존재를 발견하며 소설가의 시야는 확장된다. This article revealed that death is a important role in Lee Chung-joon’s early novel, and tried to establish that the way he talks about it is related to Lee Chung-joon’s novel consciousness. “Tightrope performer” shows that life can also be shared by sharing the death of others. But the “I” covering the story doesn’t accept the way it. The agony and hesitation of “I” leaves the story of death in reserve. “I” can’t abandon or ignite the story, but I vaguely realize that I need a lot of thought about it. Meanwhile, “People at the Seashore” is a work that determines how to understand and talk about death. The young narrator “I” cannot confirm the death of others, but admits it to be true. What matters to me is that their deaths are beyond the dimension of truth or lies. “I” faces the death by mimicking their actions on the ship where their father and brother went out, and at that moment, “I” realizes the desire to talk for the other. Furthermore, “Hawker” embodies the desire of the young narrator of the people by the sea. “I” is writing a new novel based on Min’s novel, which is joined by the death of a hawk. If Min foresaw the fate of the hawk and only joined his death, “I” explains the death by writing a new novel. It also discovers the diagnosis of society in which Min’s death is bound to fail, and the existence that was excluded from the past stories. By discovering the meaning of death and reflecting on one’s writing, the novelist’s vision is constantly expanding.
