佛敎學報(불교학보)를 통해 본 한국불교연구의 동향

『불교학보』는 동국대 불교문화연구원에서 발간하는 불교학 전문 학술지로서, 불교교학 불교사 불교문화 전반에 관한 논문을 게재하고 있다. 이 논문집은 1962년 창설된 불교문화연구소에서 이듬해 창간호를 시작으로 2012년 12월 현재 50년 동안 63집을 발간하고 있다. 불교계에 이렇다 할 학술논문집이 없었을 때, 불교계 최초로 창간되어 그동안 불교학자들의 학문적 업적을 발표하는 대변자로서 역할을 충실히 해왔으며, 한국 불교학의 흐름을 보여주고 새로운 학문적 방향을 제시하는 선구 논문집으로서 소임을 다해왔다. 이제 연구원 개원 50주년 63집을 발간하면서, 그동안의 연구성과를 회고하고 불교학보의 정체성을 확인하고 새로운 50년 불교학보의 나아갈 길을 전망하고자 이 글은 기획되었다. 그동안 불교학보게재논문의 동향을 보면, 다음의 몇가지로 정리 할 수 있다. 첫째, 한국불교의 각성을 통하여 한국불교의 정체성을 확인하였다는 점이다. 게재 논문들은 한국불교의 각성을 통하여 교학사상과 불교사, 불교신앙과 문화에 있어서, 한국불교의 주체성을 밝히고자 노력하였다는 것이다. 둘째, 교학연구의 탈근대화를 이끌었다는 것이다. 동국대학교가 세워지면서 불교계에는 비로소 현대적 불교교육이 실시되어 불교학자들이 배출되었다. 이들을 중심으로 한 현대적 불교학의 성과들은 『불교학보』를 통하여 학계에 소개되면서 현대적 불교학으로서 학문경향이 학계에서 자리잡는데 선도적 역할을 하게 되었다. 셋째, 종파의 탐구와 禪學의 연구가 깊이 있게 이루어지면서 근본불교부터 대승불교에 이르는 교파의 교학사상을 바로 밝히려는 노력과 선학의 체계적 연구가 이루어졌다는 점이다. 넷째, 고자료의 발굴을 통하여 한국 불교학 학문적 발전에 기여했다는 점이다. 다섯째, 전통적인 불교학 외에 현대과학과 의학 예술과 관련된 다양한 응용 불교학이 소개되었다. 다음은 앞으로 『불교학보』가 나아갈 길에 대해서는 한국불교학의 정체성을 바로 세우고 미래불교의 비젼을 다음 몇 가지로 제시하였다. 첫째는 1960년대 이후 2000년대에 이르는 동안 한국 불교학의 硏究推移를 통해서 한국 불교학의 정체성을 이어가고, 한국 불교학의 학문적 토대를 마련해주어야 한다는 것이다. 둘째는 앞으로 전통 불교학을 기반으로 응용 불교학을 더욱 진흥시키는데 초석이 되어야 한다는 점이다. 셋째는 불교학계의 권위지로서의 위상을 유지 발전시키고, 우수한 신진학자의 학문적 성과를 발표하는 등용문의 역할을 다해야 한다는 것이다. 끝으로 이와 같은 『불교학보』의 방향설정을 통하여, 우리논문집은 국내저명학술 지로서 만족하지 않고 불교학계의 국제저명학술지로 지향점을 두어 한국 불교학을 국제 불교학계에 널리 알리는 데에도 게을리 하지 않아야 한다는 것이다. The Bulgyohakbo(Journal for the Buddhist Studies; 佛敎學報) is a professional academic journal issued by the Institute for Buddhist Culture at Dongguk University, and it is publishing treatises in general on Buddhist doctrinal studies, the history of Buddhism, and Buddhist culture. Beginning with the first issue in 1963 after the foundation of the Institute for Buddhist Culture in 1962, it has published 63 treatise collections as of Dec. 2012 for 50 years. When there were no treatise collections to speak of, it started its publication for the first time in the Buddhist community. Since publishing its first issue, it has faithfully played a role of a spokesperson presenting the academic achievements of Buddhist scholars, and it has filled its role of a pioneering collection of treatises showing the flow of the Korean Buddhist Research and proposing new directions for the Buddhist research. While we publish the 63rd treatise collection in commemoration of 50th Anniversary of the institute, this writing was planned in order to look back on its academic achievements, ascertain its identity, and to put its course during its new 50 years into perspective. If we get a full review of the treatises which was published in the Bulgyohakbo, that can be summarized as follows. First, the treatises published in the magazine confirmed the identity of Korean Buddhism through disillusion toward Korean Buddhism. This means that they tried to clarify the independence of Korean Buddhism in respect of Buddhist philosophy, the history of Buddhism, Buddhist faith, and Buddhist culture through reopening their eyes to Korean Buddhism. Secondly, they led the modernization of Buddhist doctrinal studies. After Dongguk University was founded, modern Buddhist education was conducted in the Buddhist community, and Buddhist scholars began to be turned out. Their achievements in the field of modern Buddhist research were introduced to the academic world through the Bulgyohakbo, so that this magazine came to play a leading role in establishing an academic trend as modern Buddhist research in the academic circles. Thirdly, as research on Buddhist orders and Seon studies was done in depth, the efforts to correctly illuminate the doctrinal philosophies of all denominations from the fundamental Buddhism to Mahayana Buddhism were made, and a systematic research on Seon studies was done. Fourthly, the excavation of old materials contributed to the academic development of Korean Buddhist research. Fifthly, diverse applied Buddhist studies in relation to modern science, medicine, and art besides the traditional Buddhist research have been introduced. Next, regarding the course this Bulgyohakbo should take, as far as the task to set the identity of Korean Buddhist studies right and the vision of the future Buddhism First, on the basis of the research progress of Korean Buddhist research from 1960s to 2000s, it should keep the identity of Korean Buddhism, and it should prepare the academic foundation of Korean Buddhist studies. Secondly, it should become the cornerstone of the promotion of applied Buddhist research on the basis of the traditional Buddhist research. Thirdly, it should maintain and develop the status of an authoritative journal in the Buddhist academic circles, and it should fulfill the role of the gateway to the publication of the academic achievements by excellent rising scholars. Finally, through establishing these directions for the Bulgyohakbo, our collection of treatises should aspire toward a well-known international academic journal, never satisfied with the status of a famous Korean academic journal, so that it should show no neglect of promulgating Korean Buddhist studies to the international Buddhist community.

토픽 모델링을 활용한 한국불교 연구 동향 분석 -2008~2022년 불교 관련 학술지 게재 논문을 중심으로

본 연구는 최근 15년 동안(2008-2022) ‘한국불교’를 주제로 나온 국내 연구논문을 대상으로 토픽 모델링 기법을 활용하여 빅데이터를 분석하고, 한국불교 연구의 동향을 파악하여 그 시의성을 도출하였다. 한국 불교학의 대표적 전문 학술지인 『한국불교학』, 『불교학보』, 『불교학연구』를 중심으로 한국불교와 관련된 논문 483편의 초록을 텍스트 마이닝(text-mining) 방식을 사용해 빅데이터로 정리하고 검토하였다. LDA(잠재 디리클레 할당) 기반 토픽 모델링을 활용한 결과, ‘불교 사회화와 대중화’, ‘불교 수행과 신앙 전통’, ‘불교학 연구와 방법론’, ‘원효와 한국 불교철학’, ‘선의 역사와 근대의 선승’, ‘동아시아 속의 한국불교’, ‘신라와 고려의 불교 사상’, ‘사회 복지와 불교적 실천’, ‘불교 교단과 종파의 전개’의 9개 토픽을 추출하였다. 이 토픽들은 한국 불교학의 주요 분야와 주제들을 시대별로 포괄하고 있으며 2000년대부터 꾸준히 게재되는 모습이 확인된다. 시기별로는 특별 기념 학술대회의 개최에 따라 ‘불교학 연구와 방법론’, ‘불교 사회화와 대중화’ 토픽의 논문 수가 급증하기도 했다. 한편 ‘사회 복지와 불교적 실천’과 같은 불교의 사회적 역할과 관련된 주제를 다룬 연구는 코로나 유행 시기인 2020년부터 축소되는 양상을 보인다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 한국불교의 주제별 연구 동향을 고찰하였고, 향후 이를 바탕으로 다양한 관점에서 한국 불교학의 미래를 논의할 수 있기를 기대한다. This research analyzes academic papers published on Korean Buddhism over the past 15 years (2008-2022). Topic modeling was used to identify trends in research on Korean Buddhism and analyze changes over time. The abstracts of 483 papers related to Korean Buddhism were organized and analyzed through a big-data approach, focusing on the Journal of Buddhist Culture Research Institute, the Korean Journal of Buddhist Studies, and the Journal of the Korean Association for Buddhist Studies, which are representative academic journals in Korea. The following nine topics were extracted through topic modeling based on latent Dirichlet allocation: 1) socialization and popularization of Buddhism, 2) Buddhist practice and religious tradition, 3) Buddhist research and methodology, 4) Wonhyo and Korean Buddhist philosophy, 5) history of Seon and modern Seon masters, 6) Korean Buddhism in East Asia, 7) Buddhist thought in Silla and Goryeo, 8) social welfare and Buddhist practice, and 9) the development of Buddhist orders and sects. These topics encompass the major fields and topics of Korean Buddhist studies since 200. The number of papers on Buddhist research and methodology and on the socialization and popularization of Buddhism increased rapidly as special commemorative conferences were held. In contrast, research on the social role and popularization of Buddhism, as exemplified by the topic of social welfare and Buddhist practice, appears to be decreasing since 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic played a dominant role in social trends. This paper describes trends in academic research in Korean Buddhism, and it is hoped that the findings will promote shared innovation and the sustainable exploration of perspectives in the future.
