Although whiplash is typically considered as a minor injury of AISI, it has become one of the most important types of injury to occupants due to the frequency of occurrences and the high cost for long-term remedies. In this paper we utilize the finite element simulation method to look into injury mechanism and design the seats mitigating whiplash injury. Based on the anatomical geometry and material properties from opened cadavers test data, we have developed a finite element model of human cervical spine. Using the calibrated seat and developed neck model, we have simulated the sled tests of rear end impacts under the various injury causing conditions. Through these simulations we evaluate the injury level of base seat. With the results of simulation results under various seat conditions we show that it is possible to suggest the guidelines for designing whiplash protective seats by adopting these numerical procedures.

This paper presents the ACTIVE SEAT. The name ‘ACTIVE SEAT’ means the vehicle seat that using mechanism for reducing the neck injury. Although the vehicle is equipped with active head restraint normally for reducing the neck injury, many drivers were injured by rear-end collision. The reason is because active head restraint has many faults and mechanism is required for certain level of safety on the neck injury. Therefore mechanisms of various ways are studied actively. Finally, in this study, active seat using developed mechanism for reducing the neck injury shows better than active head restraint at KNCAP(Korea New Car Assessment Program) test and analysis program.

According to the automobile insurance data, most of the victims of rear-end accidents experienced a whiplash injury classified as AIS 2 or less. To date, mainly three different neck injury criteria are proposed: NIC, N㎞ and LNL. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effects of the occupant size on the neck injury criteria in low speed(ΔV=10㎞/h) rear-end impact. To accomplish this, rear impact simulations were conducted using the MADYMO human facet occupant model(50th percentile male) and the three scaled occupant models seated in a mass production seat. Neck injury criteria(NIC, Nkm, LNL) were then compared for the different occupant models.

In the recent years, a large effort has been conducted to the investigation of injury mechanisms and injury tolerance criteria related to whiplash injury. Nevertheless, many questions, especially related to injury criteria and their respective biomechanical tolerance levels, remain unresolved. Form the research, BioRIDIIg is better then HybridIII and RID dummy. But, the issues of repeatability and reproducibility become more important in these low-rear impact test conditions on BioRIDIIg. In this study, a series of sled tests was conducted to assess the influence of several test parameters on the reproducibility of results obtained with the BioRIDIIg. The sled tests were performed according to the test procedure proposed by KNCAP. Neck injury indicators, NIC, Nkm, upper & lower Fx, upper & lower Fz, T1 X acc, Head X acc, were analysis by each dummy. The results show that some criteria like the neck shear force exhibit C.V.(coefficient variation) up to 20.

According to the automobile insurance data, most of the victims of rear-end accidents experienced a whiplash injury classified as AIS 2 or less. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effects of the accelerometer array on the neck injury criteria in low speed(△V=4, 6, 8km/h) rear-end impact test. To accomplish this, rear impact simulations were conducted using the MADYMO human facet occupant model(50th percentile male) and the occupant models equipped accelerometer array. Neck injury criteria(NIC, N㎞, LNL) were then compared for the different occupant models.

To decrease neck injury in low speed rear-end collision, Whiplash test is conducted by KNCAP since 2008. The Whiplash test is performed according to test procedure proposed by KNCAP. Neck injury criteria, Head Contact Time, Head Rebound Velocity, NIC, Nkm, upper neck Fx, upper neck Fz, T1 X acceleration are measured by BioRID Ⅱ dummy. In this study, whiplash test data is analysed from 2009 to 2011 and the trend of decreasing neck injuries is considered.

Whiplash injuries in low-speed rear-end collisions are the most common injuries and has been a social issue in insurance industry, such as excessive medical claim costs along with exaggerated injuries of victims and treatments from hospitals. According to the Korea Insurance Development Institute reports, the number of claims by rear-end collision was approximately 703,000, which accounts for 53.6 % of the total car-to-car collisions in 2014. Part of the neck injury claims in the Korea car insurance was approximately 28.3 %. Furthermore, approximately 98.4% of the injured persons in rear-end collisions sustained minor injuries under AIS2. In order to improve this situation as well as find out the severity of neck injuries from rear-end collision, the Korea Automobile Insurance Repair Research and Training Center conducted car-to-car rear-end crash tests that striking vehicles(SUV) collided into different sizes of struck-vehicles(small, middle, and large sedan) at the impact speeds of 8 km/h ~ 16 km/h. In order to analyze the whiplash injury, the BioRID-II was seated in each struck-vehicles, and the neck injury criteria(NIC), head contact time, maximum vehicle accelerations, and mean vehicle accelerations were calculated from values from the accelerations of the dummy and the struck-vehicles.
