Objective-The Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer’s disease (KBASE) aimed to recruit 650 individuals, aged from 20 to 90 years, to search for new biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and to investigate how multi-faceted lifetime experiences and bodily changes contribute to the brain changes or brain pathologies related to the AD process. Methods-All participants received comprehensive clinical and neuropsychological evaluations, multi-modal brain imaging, including magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiography, [11C]Pittsburgh compound B-positron emission tomography (PET), and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose-PET, blood and genetic marker analyses at baseline, and a subset of participants underwent actigraph monitoring and completed a sleep diary. Participants are to be followed annually with clinical and neuropsychological assessments, and biannually with the full KBASE assessment, including neuroimaging and laboratory tests. Results-As of March 2017, in total, 758 individuals had volunteered for this study. Among them, in total, 591 participants-291 cognitively normal (CN) old-aged individuals, 74 CN young- and middle-aged individuals, 139 individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 87 individuals with AD dementia (ADD)-were enrolled at baseline, after excluding 162 individuals. A subset of participants (n=275) underwent actigraph monitoring. Conclusion-The KBASE cohort is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study that recruited participants with a wide age range and a wide distribution of cognitive status (CN, MCI, and ADD) and it has several strengths in its design and methodologies. Details of the recruitment, study methodology, and baseline sample characteristics are described in this paper.
Quasiparticle Dynamics and Superconductivity in the 60-K Phase of YBa2Cu3Oy
Yunsang Lee 한국물리학회 2007 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.50 No.4
We report several key findings to elucidate the 60-K phase of the high-Tc superconductors YBa2Cu3Oy by using infrared spectroscopy on the y = 6.65 and 6.75 compounds. In contrast to no significant change of Tc, the coherent spectral weight and the superfluid density increase gradually with y, which indicates an increase of the doping amount in the CuO2 plane with increasing y. The resistivity merging observed in the normal state is attributed to an unusual enhancement of the scattering rate with doping.???

We have investigated the optical conductivity and Raman spectra of Eu$_{1/2}$Ca$_{3/2}$MnO$_{4}$ (long-range charge-orbital ordering, CO-OO) and Eu$_{1/2} $Sr$_{3/2}$MnO$_{4}$ (short-range CO-OO). Characteristic optical responses of the CO-OO phase are 1) a higher frequency shift of the 1 eV absorption with its width being narrower in the optical conductivity and 2) development of two Raman-active phonon modes. While these behaviors are apparently identified in the Eu$_{1/2}$Ca$_{3/2}$MnO$_{4}$ compound, they are much weaker in Eu$_{1/2}$Sr$_{3/2}$MnO$_{4}$. This difference originates from a correlation length of CO-OO with respect to the $A$-site cation configuration.
Charge and Orbital-Ordering-Induced Charge-Polarized State in Bilayer Manganite
Yunsang Lee,T Arima,T Tokunaga,T Lottermoser,Y Tokura,Y. K Seo 한국물리학회 2007 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.51 No.5
We have investigated a new type of electronic charge-polarized state in bilayer manganite, Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (PSCMO). The PSCMO compound has two charge-orbital ordering (CO-OO) states with respect to the direction of the orbital stripe, which is clearly identified by addressing the optical anisotropy. Notably, a charge-polarized state is formed in the lower-temperature CO-OO state where the $c$-axis stacking patterns of the lattice and the charge modulations along the $b$-axis match with each other. We detail the correlation among the transport, the optical and the structural properties in the charge and orbital-ordering-induced charge-polarized states in bilayer manganite.

Background: The number of newly diagnosed cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Korea, which had increased until 2019, has markedly decreased since the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic started. This study evaluated whether the decrease is due to a reduction in the incidence of HIV infection and/or delayed diagnosis during the pandemic. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 587 newly diagnosed patients with HIV infection between February 2018 and January 2022 from four general hospitals, and their characteristics were compared between the prepandemic and pandemic periods. The lapse time from infection to diagnosis was estimated using an HIV modeling tool. Results: The estimated mean times to diagnosis were 5.68 years (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.45 - 6.51 years) and 5.41 years (95% CI: 4.09 - 7.03 years) before and during the pandemic, respectively (P = 0.016). The proportion of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-defining illnesses, expected to visit hospitals regardless of the pandemic, decreased from 17.2% before the pandemic to 11.9% during the pandemic (P = 0.086). Conclusion: The decrease in the number of newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection in Korea might have resulted from an actual decrease in the incidence of HIV infection rather than a worsening of underdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis.
A simple and efficient color recovering system for content sharing website
Han, Yunsang,Lee, Seokhan,Choi, Jongsoo,Lee, Sangkeun IEEE 2010 IEEE transactions on consumer electronics Vol.56 No.2
<P>Lossy image data compression is commonly used to reduce the original data size on traditional lossy compression fields, such as MPEG-x and H.26x including User-Created Content. This paper proposes a simple and efficient method for correcting online user-created contents¿ distortion in color. The proposed system consisted of two main phases: 1) in the training step, the working space was converted to CIE Lab color space. Next, the training images were classified to estimate the correction matrices. The correction matrices were calculated and optimized through a Newton iteration-based approach between the original and distorted images; and 2) in the correction step, the optimized correction matrices were applied to the distorted images for the color reproduction. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, the quantitative measures were defined in terms of the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and correction ratio. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach can reduce significantly the color distortion from a video sharing website. The proposed method can be a useful tool for correcting the distortion caused by image processing, such as lossy compression and color improvement in the consumer electronics-related field.</P>
