This paper addresses the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and the linear quadratic (LQ) structurebased predictive functional control (PFC) for batch processes under non-repetitive unknown disturbances and partialactuator faults. First, by adopting the extended non-minimal state space (ENMSS) model in which the state variablesand the tracking error are united, the new state vector with more degrees is provided for the controller design. Inorder to enhance the ensemble control performance under the PFC structure, GA is adopted for the optimizationof the weighting matrix in the controller. The case study on the injection velocity control in an injection moldingmachine demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed PFC scheme against various disadvantages.

The optimization of aldose reductase (AR) expression levels and tracking of the AR expression sites within the cell is an essential step in developing a platform for the effective production of aldose reductase inhibitors (ARIs). In this study, we have demonstrated the use of both immunocytochemistry and quantum dots-based immunofluorescence techniques for observing and detecting the expression level and localization of AR in the cytoplasm and cell membrane of a eukaryotic cell model with high levels of AR protein expression. Our results show that high expression levels of human AR can be achieved using the eukaryotic cell model that we have developed. The overexpressed AR can be used for translational studies of hAR and the screening of ARIs. More importantly, the use of the established quantum dots-based immunofluorescence technique in the intracellular labeling of AR allows the determination of the expression and distribution of the AR gene. Overall, the use of the interdisciplinary approach of both genetic engineering and quantum dot-based immunofluorescence allows not only the effective production of a desired protein, but also the determination of the cellular localization of such an expressed protein.

Spatial distributions and concentrations of heavy metals in vegetable plots in Nanjing were analyzed for assessment of environmental contamination status and source identification by GIS. Compared with background reference values, the average concentrations of all tested elements (Cu, Zn, Cd, As and Pb) except Cu exceeded the secondary evaluation standard of soil environmental quality. Coefficients of variation, arranged from large to small, were Cd > As > Zn > Pb > Cu. Semi-variance functions showed that the five elements were closely spatially correlated within the sampling range. The spatial distributions of Cu and Zn, As and Pb were similar to some extent. Multivariate statistical analysis showed that heavy metal contents were positively correlated with soil nutrients. The organic matter content was highly significantly positively correlated with the content of Zn and Cd and significantly positively correlated with As. CEC was highly significantly positively correlated with Cu and significantly positively correlated with Pb. However, pH and heavy metal concentrations were not significantly correlated. Principal components analysis indicated that Pb and Zn had a natural crustal source; Cu was mainly derived from discharged metallurgical waste; Cd and As came from agricultural pollution. Moreover, correlation analysis indicated that the Cd and As may have the same source.
Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Intestinal Fibrosis

Intestinal fibrosis associated stricture is a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease usually requiring endoscopic or surgical intervention. Effective anti-fibrotic agents aiming to control or reverse intestinal fibrosis are still unavailable. Thus, clarifying the mechanism underpinning intestinal fibrosis is imperative. Fibrosis is characterized by an excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins at the injured sites. Multiple cellular types are implicated in fibrosis development. Among these cells, mesenchymal cells are major compartments that are activated and then enhance the production of ECM. Additionally, immune cells contribute to the persistent activation of mesenchymal cells and perpetuation of inflammation. Molecules are messengers of crosstalk between these cellular compartments. Although inflammation is necessary for fibrosis development, purely controlling intestinal inflammation cannot halt the development of fibrosis, suggesting that chronic inflammation is not the unique contributor to fibrogenesis. Several inflammation-independent mechanisms including gut microbiota, creeping fat, ECM interaction, and metabolic reprogramming are involved in the pathogenesis of fibrosis. In the past decades, substantial progress has been made in elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of intestinal fibrosis. Here, we summarized new discoveries and advances of cellular components and major molecular mediators that are associated with intestinal fibrosis, aiming to provide a basis for exploring effective anti-fibrotic therapies in this field.

<P>The development of cost-effective, non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance for sustainable technologies. Efficient screening strategies for electrocatalysts can greatly increase the commercialization speed of these advanced technologies. Here, ternary phase diagrams with large-scale tuning and designated-scale tuning strategies are applied for the first time to provide a new method for screening perovskite oxide-based electrocatalysts for OERs. Specifically, the family of double perovskites (Sr2Fe1.5-<I>x</I>-<I>y</I>Co<I>x</I>Ni<I>y</I>Mo0.5O6−δ, 0 ≤ <I>x</I>, <I>y</I> ≤ 1.5) was utilized to understand the role of transition metals in perovskite oxides. Ternary phase diagrams can facilitate a rapid screening process, provide a straightforward relationship between phase structures and catalytic activities, and help to confirm the effects of various combinations of transition metals on the OER activity. The Fe-Co system (Sr2Fe1.5-<I>x</I>Co<I>x</I>Mo0.5O6−δ) improves the catalytic activities, as demonstrated by the reduced Tafel slope and enhanced stability, while the Fe-Ni system (Sr2Fe1.5-<I>y</I>Ni<I>y</I>Mo0.5O6−δ) improves the surface kinetic properties of the OER, as demonstrated by its reduced overpotential. Significantly, the Co, Ni, and Fe ternary phase systems can serve as the synergistic coactive sites (Sr2Fe1.5-<I>x</I>-<I>y</I>Co<I>x</I>Ni<I>y</I>Mo0.5O6−δ) to catalyze the OER, resulting in an improved overall OER performance. This systematic study not only demonstrates a new strategy to allow the rapid screening of double perovskite OER catalysts based on large-scale tuning and designated-scale tuning strategies but, more importantly, also provides an insightful understanding of the use of multitransition metal-based double perovskites for catalysis of the OER.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

The ticks feed large amount of blood from their hosts and transmit pathogens to the victims. The salivary gland plays an important role in the blood feeding. When the female ticks are near engorgement, the salivary gland gradually loses its functions and begins to rapidly degenerate. In this study, data-independent acquisition quantitative proteomics was used to study changes in the phosphorylation modification of proteins during salivary gland degeneration in Haemaphysalis longicornis. In this quantitative study, 400 phosphorylated proteins and 850 phosphorylation modification sites were identified. Trough RNA interference experiments, we found that among the proteins with changes in phosphorylation, apoptosis-promoting Hippo protein played a role in salivary gland degeneration.

<P>If different active sites in a catalyst have optimal binding to different reaction intermediates and short reaction paths among them, they may work cooperatively to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. Based on this design principle, in this study, we start with a B-site ordered double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6−δ with poor OER activity as the host material to fulfill the requirement of a short pathway, and then, replace Mo with Ni and Fe with Co to optimize the synergistic interplay of the multi-active sites. Replacing Mo with Ni indeed dramatically enhances the OER activity and structural/operating stability. Further improvement in OER performance is realized by partial substitution of Fe with Co, leading to the development of a material with the nominal composition of Sr2Fe0.8Co0.2Mo0.65Ni0.35O6−δ, which outperforms the noble metal oxide IrO2 and is better than most of the electrocatalysts developed based on a single descriptor, such as Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (eg occupancy close to unity), PrBaCo2O5+δ (O 2p-band center relative to the Fermi level), and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ (charge-transfer energy) in many aspects. As a universal method, combined structural and compositional tuning to create a cooperative effect among different active sites for intermediate adsorption and reaction in an ordered structure may provide a new way for the design of superior electrocatalysts for various applications.</P>
